So, it'll likely be $40 for an online only game with only 7 maps. Weak. Of course I'll have to buy it, all my friends will be playing it, but I'm gonna feel instantly ripped off.

lol Pops. I haven't touched Warhawk for a long while. Loved it at first, but found something better in COD4. Warhawk was just too chaotic at first especially since there wasn't a tutorial on anything. At least I didn't find one. Loved shooting people down in a tank or turret though. Was never good at gunning people down on foot. Is Socom the same deal or like COD? I remember hearing the sales clerk at Fry's talk about how he was so hyped for Socom and getting a PS3 for it while I was picking up COD4. I never played Socom before & might think of getting this off PSN.

@leiwei: If you havent played Socom, prepare to be amazed. Best online multiplayer experience IMO...they sorta ruined it with S3 with all of the vehicles but the maps were huge...Socom Confrontation is going back to the roots and I like that. Definitely a buy for me. Now to figure how to get money...too many games in September.

@ Haiddasalami

I know it'll get a lot of play for the money, but my point is that a multiplayer only game needs to ship with at least a dozen maps. I know there will be dlc, but that's not the point. This game has been in development for a while, and still isn't close to release. If what he said about 7 maps is true, then what a waste.

what a waste? do you know how much work is put forth for just one map? you should really watch the video above....

leiwei,

Socom is a game that takes a lot of strategy, the gameplay is solid, and REALLY addicting...that's exactly why you can still find thousans of players still playing online all the Socom games...

And...goddamn I have always loved the SOCOM soundtracks...they are just amazing

Haiddasalami,

Well, many think that Zipper screwed up Socom 3, but to tell you the truth, I actually believe they just wanted to see in which other ways they could expand the Socom experience and so they tried new stuff, well, at least they now know that that wasn't what the fans wanted, I cannot wait for this version of Socom by Slant Six and well as I cannot wait for Zipper's next Socom...

ps3isdead (your username is actually quite creative and funny...)

dead you say? Socom, from the beginning has been a 3rd person shooter and its still alive for how many years now?....claiming that a game is dead before it is even released it idiotic, but then again, just right after reading your username, I wasn't expecting any less....

Yes but the maps can be sectioned off. So to the developer theres about 3 maps per map if its anything like Socom 3.

@ps3isdead: "shouldve made it first person this game is going to die real fast..."

LOL! You do know people still play Socom 2 and 3 right so I dont think this is going to fail. Just a minor fix till Socom 4 comes out.

Ps3isdead. Another fanboy? I dunno. I admit I was a huge xbox 360 fanboy back then. I came into having the PS2 very late. All my friends had it, my ex had it, but I finally cave into getting one when GT4 came out. I have more games on my Xbox than did the PS2 (though a lot of RPGs on it). I "HAD" more games on my 360 than the PS3. When before the PS3 came out, I scoffed at the system when I saw someone at Target play an early kiosk build of Motorstorm. It was sluggish and generic. I even frequented xboxyde every single day to check out new games/previews for the 360, of course nowadays it's gamersyde.

All that kinda changed when my 360 RROD on me. I've been through a core (2 RROD, 2nd a refurb from MS). The 2nd time it RROD, my current gf's bro bought it off me and he "fixed" it w/ the towel trick but it went RROD again for good. The "3rd" 360 I had was a premium that I picked up at Fry's and it went RROD after 2 months of Mass Effect + Gears. The 4th 360 is a refurb from MS and it says in the back dated 9-12-07 from the Manufacturer's and is still runnin strong. Of course I don't play it much anymore, but I do still play/keep the games I love for it.

Well, my current gf bought me a launch PS3 (20 gigs) as a present (which isn't much compared to a Chanel bag/wallet combo i got her, but still nice of her), and although I admit the games sucked in the first year, the system's been surprising me a lot. It does a lot. And the most worries I ever got from it was several hangs/freezes during web browsing/video playing. I might say I have angst against the 360 now because of the RRODs, but I have to admit the Ps3 does have quite the variety. And I enjoy being able to play some of the Japanese games off the JPN PSN store. But I would say I'm probably "living the PS2 era" and seeing what it was all about off the PS3. You might say "hah, he's playing PS2 games on it" but hey... I can play PS3 games on it too when I want to.

So why do I frequent ps3fanboy more than xbox360fanboy?
Who knows, maybe because i'm a Sony fanboy now or maybe because between the two, I see more neutrality here than I do on the other side. But I do know I really am against MS's business tactics in handling the gaming market w/ their hype marketing. Maybe that's why. Maybe Halo 2 disappointed me enough to stay away from Bungie.

Hmm long spiel wall of text. *puts flame shield on*

Dear Fanboy(kid?),

I know you were probably about 5 years old back in '02 but a game was released by the name of "SOCOM: US Navy SEALs". The franchise has been around for quite some time now and is not going anywhere.. especially with a huge and loyal fan base. Do us all a favor though and do hold your breath until Socom dies, I think I'd like the result.

Just an FYI to those complaining about this being a 3rd person shooter. Slant Six(the developer of this game, not Zipper) has given u the option of First person or 3rd person. Suprised no one has stated this yet. So there you have it; you, you can play in first person aaaaannnnnd you, yeah you, you can keep your third-person. Everyone's happy.

It can't be too hard, to state once in the blog, since we're writers, and we're giving information, what the abbreviations mean. "SOCOM" this and that. What the hell is a SOCOM. I don't play these games but I might rent them, if I knew what the hell a SOCOM was. This constantly happens on ps3fanboy. You people are supposed to be writers. Read a newspaper and notice that the better ones always state first what the whole thing is, then abbreviate it from there.

Halo if you played the first one, was this weird arse alien "ring" (hence Halo) that was mechanical on the outer side, but on the inner side housed trees, rivers, mountains, snow, etc. Kinda like a space colony I guess. What made it so awesome was that back in last gen console era, it was the first fps game imo that involved numerous use of vehicles both friend and foe, numerous weapons, and the biggest of them all, computer npc AI that helped you in your combat. I don't recall any PC fps that did this. I'm sure DOOM3 wasn't. And I'm sure Halflife wasn't either at Halo's scale and abundant use of it. Multiplayer was great as well on a console point of view. Sure doesn't beat PC multiplayer imo.

@ ps3isdead

Under that same logic (re: SOCOM should be first person, not 3rd), wouldn't Gears Of War 2 also fail ? I played through Gears of War and I can't remember any first person scenarios, and I loved it.

SOCOM going FPS would be taking away part of what SOCOM is. It's a fun series and I think people should just try it before they bash it. If it's anything like the previous iterations, it'll be a blast.

Easily Socom should be 3rd Person, because as you brought to our attention, COD4 is a great first-person-multiplayer experience...why would you bother buying a new game that's near exactly the same? Plus, I prefer 3rd person to first which is one of the reason I prefer Warhawk to CoD4.

But I'm more concerned with this trend of online-only multiplayer games. I think it's important for all games like CoD, MGS, GTA, and Vegas to have online modes with their very in-depth story modes. But now it seems people are skipping the single player and co-op story modes all together. I like online gaming, as it gives a social quality to gaming and extends the game's value past beating it once or twice, but multiplayer, to me, is a little too shallow of an experience to pay more than 20 bucks for.

I mean death match, capture the flag, though fun, they aren't very engaging. Just excuses to kill people. Even in the massively popular World of Warcraft, the big focus of gameplay is on quests. I appreciate the time and effort it takes to make a map, but really...if all i'm going to do is run in circles and die at near-random, who cares?

I hear ya... and they even want to chrge you 40 bucks for the online game. I'm getting this game PERIOD, but like one of the guys said, its gonna be hard not to feel cheated.

This trend of charging 40.00 bucks for a online-only game and then charging you 10.00 dollars for each map its not good at all and its only gonna hurt the gamers not the developers.

I cant help thinking SC is more or less a reworked version of previous incarnations, rather than offering anything new. which to most socom vets such as myself may not be such a bad thing (although if they continue with the dodgy collision detection for bullets i'll be just as infuriated now as i was with S1). I'd actually not bother buying it myself were it not for the rest of the clan almost definitely getting it. I'd be really rather happy with COD4, MGS4 and most certainly GTA4 (my order is in the post w00t w00t). but hey, peer pressure and all that....

And what is the difference? Confrontation will just include an online mode and Socom 4 will include single player and online mode? And the online mode in Socom 4 will have more maps and stuff? Is this like a GT 5 and GT 5 Prologue thing where Confrontation is sort of like a demo for the upcoming game?

Looks fantastic.

I think Socom is an underrated franchise, the PSP games were sweet.I'm looking foward to this game.

Look at that you can roll too.

The only thing I didn't like was when he mentions the DLC.I hate paying for stuff that's in the disc but I understand that making those maps isn't easy but just to be clear please don't put them in the disc at least give the illusion I'm getting something outside the box.If I'm paying for something is to add more value to the game, paying for something that was there at the begining is pointless.

To be honest they should instead release expansion packs.3 maps + some single player missions. Also that I'm not a MP fan,I'll proably play online one week unless is enjoy it like TF2 then I'll go back for more.

Mr. ESC

I don't think he said anything about the DLC being on the disc, instead he mentions that the DLC will be like Warhawk...if so, then it will bemore than worth to spend some money on them, more so if the maps are as well thought as they are shown on the video (and explained on the magazine)
