got the game this morning here in NYC, loving the wheel so far. not nearly as awkward as i thought it would be. playing online, i've won a handful of races so i think it's a keeper. and yes. i do really have it. http://homepage.mac.com/ajmccarthy/mk.jpg

Why does people ALWAYS have to abbreviate anything Gamecube GCN???? I think we know Nintendo is behind Gamecube. For pete's sake.

umm...what about ordering effects? how many people performed the trials, in what order did they perform the tasks? You would expect that, no matter what, the times are likely to get better over time...

counterbalancing!!! :P

The Wii Wheel is a LOT more fun/easier on Automatic than it is on Manual. You lose the ability to get boosts from power slides, but there's a much smoother and larger turning area. It's the mode that feels most like a steering wheel should.

Using the Wii Wheel on manual is awkward and so far I've not felt a desperate need for the power slide boosts

Ok, I have to call you guys out, along with everyone else who's reviewed this game. You all say that the motion controls suck, yet some of the highest scoring guys use em. Are you using Automatic? If so, yeah that will make sliding hard as it will hit a threshold during turning that will make you start to slide. Use Manual and you have complete control.

I use the nunchuk and wiimote, and I almost always use Wario's chopper. It's so much easier to pop wheelies that way. I gave the wheel a go, and I don't like it. Nether does my brother, but his girlfriend loves it, and kicks his ass with it.

This looks to be fairly accurate for the track in question, but I'll be the results are not necessarily consistent across all tracks. My bet is, certain tracks will end up favoring certain controllers, making it harder to say which is the "best". You really should make it clear that these results are only applicable to the track tested.

I'm really impressed with the comparison of controllers. Having done a modest search online, I am seeing somewhat of a polarization between steering wheel racers and gcn controller (or non-sterring wheel users). I personally tried the wheel and quickly discarded it during Grand Prix use. And while playing online, I was mediocre at best using the gamecube controller. As I have by no means achieved Mario Kart nirvana, I hope I'm not "shunned" online for choosing not to use the steering wheel. Does Nintendo plan to host tourneys where only the wheel will be allowed or vice versa?

I personally prefer the Wiimote and nunchuck, because it gives me the steering accuracy of an analog stick, and the ekstras that comes with using the remote, like the jump moves and wiimote speaker warnings. It is also one of the best controllers to use when holding down the item button, to use items like bananas for a shield, while you can pick up another item. This is nearly impossible with the remote/wheel.

The Wii wheel is not as bad as I predicted, and I sometimes use it for the fun.

I tend to steer away from using my NGC controllers as I don't have any wavebirds, and since the classic controller works more or less the same.

what i'm really wondering is if other wheels work just as well, or is the slightly above center placement on the nintendo wheel the reason it bests other wheels?

I'm surprised at all the wavebird or classic controller users here... they are both crippled when it comes to popping wheelies or doing in-air maneuvers for speed boost. I'm taking the classic controller back that I picked up today for that this reason alone, which is a shame because I'd like to hold on to it, but not just for mario 64.

IMHO, nothing compares to the nunchuk/wiimote combo as you get the analog stick precision complimented by much easier jumps and wheelies... best trade off between steering wheel and CC/Wavebird.

Are you kidding? The reomte on it's own is far better than in the wheel, corners can be turned more sharply for one thing. It's the remote alone all the way for me, you guys just can't drive! ;)
