GTA IV achievements revealed ... can you kill a Rockstar dev?
The folks at Xbox 360 Achievements (warning: minor spoilers in link) have posted the official achievement list for Grand Theft Auto IV. There are 50 gamerscore-increasing tasks you must accomplish for a total of 1000 points. The list is what you'd expect: complete all missions, do well on the minigames, and various other tasks that to reach 100% game progress (which itself is an achievement).
There are about ten achievements related to multiplayer, with one particularly interesting task to "Kill a Rockstar developer in a ranked multiplayer match" worth 10 points. Achievement completionists, you may need to boost your stalker skills for this one.

Haha that's a pretty dope achievement. Rockstar seems to be in touch with the gamers out there.
I want this game.
Blah @ Apr 26th 2008 11:25PM
heh warm coffee achievement. Nice way to taunt the media
Cal @ Apr 26th 2008 11:29PM
You can now see the achievements on anyone's profile who has played GTA:IV
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 26th 2008 11:31PM
A few games have done this before.
Waffle Slayer @ Apr 27th 2008 1:31AM
Guitar Hero 3 being one of them.
EMOruffino @ Apr 27th 2008 6:03PM
and THP8
Ghen @ Apr 27th 2008 9:45PM
They've all pussyed out and done this achievement the easy way.. You kill a dev, your friend kills you, your friend gets the achievement too. I'm waiting for one to be truely rare so you can tell devs and friends of devs (and lucky random people) from the rest instead of this just being another nameless achievement that you'll get during the course of normal gameplay.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 26th 2008 11:33PM
I wonder how they plan on doing this... If its real, then there is likely only a limited time you can get it...
Jeff Smith @ Apr 27th 2008 11:33AM
It's Viral. Meaning that if someone kills a Developer , you can kill the guy who killed the developer to get the Ach.
ComradeTrotskii @ Apr 26th 2008 11:48PM
jeff: are you sure? I saw this before and it pretty much looked like you had to kill a Rockstar developer.
I recall a similar achievement in another game (I'm thinking PGR4 but that's probably wrong) which sounded really difficult but I ended up getting in my first online match. If it's simply a case of 'six degrees of separation' then its boring. Actually killing a R* dev: pretty cool.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 27th 2008 12:03AM
Guitar hero 3 had the same exact achievement and was phrased beat one of the makers at their own game or somethin like that.
I got it the very first person I beat online, but only cause he already had it. I'm 99.99% sure this is the same situation. Everyone will have it within a couple weeks.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 27th 2008 12:18AM
Watch this turn out horribly wrong and hundreds of Rockstar devs end up murdered.
heckthor @ Apr 27th 2008 4:55AM
And that's the reason Online achievements suck... cuz if u didn't buy the game when it came out, most of the online achievements are gonna be F...ing difficult to get later on!!! They (developers) should have an alternate way to get those achievements without doing it Online... That is just my opinion but it ain't gonna change anything, but i have the Right to say it, so I did.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 27th 2008 1:32PM
No, I'm pretty sure you can get any achievement at any time. If you buy it late and no one plays it any more, its kind of your fault- not really the developer's. Furthermore, achievements aren't necessary, and the only reason it would really matter is if you're an achievement whore.
theturtle363 @ Apr 26th 2008 11:36PM
Damn there is a 100% completion achievement, well there goes summer.
NukeAssault @ Apr 26th 2008 11:43PM
There goes my life cause it aint happening. XD
Zeus.:God @ Apr 27th 2008 12:18AM
You're going to kill yourself?
/life
Matt B @ Apr 27th 2008 1:05AM
Like it was any different than your last summer.
Don't worry about the smell of BBQ and fun with your friends. You have to get that achievement!!
Then you can talk about it with your friends and they'll be all like "So... there were girls there".... but YOU got that achievement. Go you!!!11
ComradeTrotskii @ Apr 26th 2008 11:44PM
If this is what I have seen before (I'm not looking at this link for fear of teh spolilerz) I really like the
***SPOILERZ***
'Assassins Greed' one. It is very rarely that games are actually able to acknowledge the existence of other games (the only ones that really spring to mind are the 'Simpsons Game' and an 'Atserix and Obelix' title which may have even been as far back as the PS1). For a game to take overtly take account of another in its mission structure (even if they are just side side missions and this is just at the end of the day a 'meaningless' achievement) in what is an attempt at satire (I cant determine whether or not it is successful as the game is not yet released) is actually a big step forward as far as I'm concerned.
The satire genre has been quite significant in the movie industry and has produced a few really great films (and a lot of really bad ones, but hey) and to see this level of awareness and sophistication in video game storytelling and structure is heartening.
ComradeTrotskii @ Apr 26th 2008 11:50PM
Too much parenthesis = Fail (but also awesome)
ZeroCorpse @ Apr 26th 2008 11:50PM
GTA and Driver have referred to each other throughout both franchises. The last one I can remember is in San Andreas when CJ is stealing Mad Dog's rhymes, there's a guy playing a Driver game near the bar. He says something like "Tanner, you can't jump for shit!"
GTA III had you assassinate Tanner!
ComradeTrotskii @ Apr 26th 2008 11:55PM
Never knew that, thanks for the info mate.
Zeus.:God @ Apr 27th 2008 12:21AM
Wow... I didn't know they made an Asterix game... Asterix is a French comic/cartoon/movie character, for those who don't know.
ComradeTrotskii @ Apr 27th 2008 12:34AM
Zeus: There have been many 'Asterix and Obelix' games but I fear that these may have been confined to European/PAL releases due to what I assume is the franchises obscurity in the US.
The game I was specifically thinking about is probably 'Asterix and Obelix XXL' which was released in Europe on the Gamecube , PS2 and PC and if Wikipedia is to be believed on the PS2 in the US. It made overt references to Tomb Raider, Mario and Sonic (at least), though you're not missing out on much if you dindn't play it.
The other Asterix game which I recall of note was on the Master System or Mega Drive/Genesis and while my brain was small and young at the time I believe it actually almost forced to cease playing for 15 minutes in every hour so that you wouldn't strain your eyes or some nonsense.
Kujel @ Apr 27th 2008 3:07AM
Another game to mention another game was DAH Big Willy Unleashed, if you didn't know.
t_m @ Apr 27th 2008 3:28AM
The GTA games are full of references to other games, moives, etc.. Half of the mission names in gta games are puns or quotes from games or movies.
Driver 3 had 100(?) Tommy Vercetti's running around for you to kill. They were wearing armbands in a reference to the fact you could never swim in GTA games.
gtajunkie4 @ Apr 27th 2008 5:07AM
gta games have always included references to other games (as well as many people, political situations etc) such as in San Andres, when they mocked a GTA clone, True Crime, with their Billboard stating 'True Grime'
i honestly marvel at the depth of this series
Paulmichael @ Apr 27th 2008 6:59AM
Yeah like everyone above me has already stated, the GTA series has a lot of references. One that was awesome in San Andreas took place in some sort of butcher house, and you are working with the lawyer character from Vice City, Ken Rosenberg. In the middle of some shooting, Rosenberg says "Hey, just like old times, huh, Tommy?" CJ then replies "Who the fuck is Tommy?" Loved that.
Spunk Buster 8000 @ Apr 27th 2008 8:05AM
Auf Wiedersehen Petrovic in reference to british TV Drama/Comedy about a bunch of Newcastle (Gordies) men who go on da boat to germany looking for work, suggesting these achievements have been suggested by all different Rockstar Studios, i love reference in games, and no one does it better than GTA cant wait to see the references in game, and also Ricky Gervais has done a few 3 min stand up routines for comedy club in game!!! how amazing is that ! the detail is goning to be deep!
Lijik @ Apr 27th 2008 9:50AM
I think you mean you mean Asterix and Obelix XXL 2, Trotskii. The first one played it safe and didn't do anything too drastic with the license (unlike the other two games that have come out since then)
MASTUR CHEEF (Yes I pay for Xbox live you cheap ass scrub) @ Apr 26th 2008 11:51PM
DAMN! I can't wait
I'm gonna try to complete all the achievements in one week when it comes out

Some of these achievements prove that you can fly helicopters. Thats what I've been wanting to know for a long time now.
Shogan @ Apr 27th 2008 12:30AM
There have been several hands-on and reviews talking about racing helicopters in multiplayer. I guess you missed that, but yes, you can fly helicopters. :)

Oh shes been warned, TRUST ME dawg! lol! This is why anyone that is really into achievements will get more out of an awesome game like this. I just think your going to be able to apreciate it more on 360 than on PS3. Judging by the list

Rockstar knows exactly what they want you to experience in their game. Might this create a new level of quality for a game? AAA? Pfffffft, meet AAAA! This might make me do my first midnight launch thingy instead of just strolling in the next day.
Waffle Slayer @ Apr 27th 2008 1:48AM
Pretty sure this is some really old news: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/863/863247p1.html

These were leaked a while ago but it's nice to see that lots of the achievements retained their sense of humor. Can't wait to tackle these. Although I have to admit one of my favorite achievements recently was from the "Army of Two" game, they simply labeled it after a line from "The Usual Suspects": "Flip You, Flip You For Real".

This seems like an award you need to get within the first year of the game. Afterwards, I'm pretty sure it will be next to impossible to get it, unless they pay their devs team to play online.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Apr 27th 2008 3:21AM
Now THERE'S an achievement which is finally WORTHY of being called an "achievement".
Kudos to those who land this one.
ron1587 @ Apr 27th 2008 6:19AM
Contact Rockstar and ask if this is a 'viral' achievement(meaning you get it if someone else killed a R* dev), or if you actually have to get lucky enough to find them in multiplayer? We'll wait.
Ging @ Apr 27th 2008 7:09AM
If it is viral, than it might be like the Burnout: Paradise viral achievement, which I got in my first online game against a friend who had certainly not played with anyone but people we knew.
It sort of implies that random gamer tags act as "seeds" to help spread the achievement without people actually having to play a developer.
