Play as Snake! Metal Gear Online updated with new map, game mode
If you spent your entire weekend sneaking through Blood Bath and Gronznyj Grad, Metal Gear Online's first two levels, you may be ready for a change of scenery. Introducing Midtown Maelstrom, a Middle-Eastern town full of narrow alleyways. Maybe you're also looking for something new to do, as long as you've got a new map.
Sneaking Mission is the name of the newly added game mode and here's how it works: one lucky player will be chosen to play as Solid Snake himself – replete with OctoCamo, Solid Eye and, if more than ten players join, another player will help snake out as Metal Gear Mk II – while the remainder of the less fortunate players will be divided into Red and Blue teams. In order for Snake to win, he must snag a set number of tags from other players; for either team to win, they must take out Snake within a set time. Not a bad way to celebrate three stable days of the Metal Gear Online beta, eh?

Looks like I'm never going to get the time to play this beta. Who wants my code? First person to email me at bs.tuna@gmail.com gets it.
Vidikron (FU) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:07AM
Ha... I wonder how many e-mails you're going to get?
baby sea tuna @ Apr 28th 2008 11:15AM
That was quick.
Sold!
MariosInferno @ Apr 28th 2008 11:13AM
Maybe it's just me, but the concepts behind this game sound far more entertaining than MGS4.
Probably just me.
Johndude @ Apr 28th 2008 11:15AM
Awesome, updating now
Look out for Johndude on the European servers lol
Johndude @ Apr 28th 2008 11:16AM
Also whats the dealio with these codes?? I never had a code, just downloaded it from the Playstation store lol
Trev @ Apr 28th 2008 11:22AM
Are you in Europe? Europe got an open beta, the US got codes that came in the pre-order "Metal Gear Saga vol. 2" case.
It probably falls somewhere between a ploy to get more pre-orders and a way of controlling what they thought would be much higher server load coming from the US.
Johndude @ Apr 28th 2008 11:24AM
Aaah yeh im in europe lol
Fox318 @ Apr 28th 2008 11:15AM
I'm still waiting for...
STATUS: FABULOUS
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:18AM
I enjoyed what little I played. Definately need to read their online manuals though.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 28th 2008 11:30AM
Yea, the novice tutorials are quite handy. I went through them even after I kinda already had everything down and now Im even better at it. Graphics ended up looking quite awesome regardless of the shortness in P's =P
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:59AM
I kept wanting a run button. I'm sure it's there....
Took me a couple minutes just to learn how to fire... L1 plus R1? Ugh...
NATO_Duke @ Apr 28th 2008 11:25AM
Mine kept failing on the updates all weekend, so I still have yet to play it. Hopefully it will be all set tonight.
Very frustrating! I blame Fenix.
xFenixKnightx @ Apr 28th 2008 11:33AM
o_O lol
I actually thought you were playing it because it said MGO P under your PSN ID but I guess you were just trying to dl. I said man hes really into it haha! This wouldn't have happened on live. It would have said "AWAY" lol, gotta love it!
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:34AM
yea mine wouldnt download the updates either. its probably my shitty internet connection though its been running really slow as of late after bing completely off for almost a month. yea my internet company sucks, but its the only thing we can get out in the woods where i live that doesnt have a stupid (and super low) download threshhold.
NATO_Duke @ Apr 28th 2008 11:37AM
My PS has been "playing" MGS for 3 days now - all in the update screen. The thing would get to 59% and fail, then I would start again to see 8 hours later the same issue. Last night I saw it at 96%, so I may actually really play it soon.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:39AM
does anybody know what happens on the PS3 when you set your status to "Unavailable"? does it make you look like your offline or something? or does it just put that little yellow beside my name on the other person's screen?
MarkHawk @ Apr 28th 2008 2:52PM
If your having problems with Downloading try this:
Use the Peer to Peer option. My brother and I have had the same problem (fails to even start). choosing P2P worked for us and others here.
NATO_Duke @ Apr 28th 2008 3:42PM
Yeah, using the p2p option and that failed a few times. Very strange.
ViagraFiend @ Apr 28th 2008 11:26AM
While it was fun, it kept sending me into the same map over and over. Also, I would choose base mode or capture and it would always turn out to be team deathmatch. Weird.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Apr 28th 2008 11:36AM
your avatar?.....is that some kind of.....Pig Bear Man? ;-D
ViagraFiend @ Apr 28th 2008 3:15PM
I'm here to educate you about the single biggest threat to our planet. You see, there is something out there which threatens our very existence and may be the end of the human race as we know it. I'm talking of course about........
Manbearpig
JAH75157 @ Apr 28th 2008 11:48AM
did this make it stateside yet? or is it still just europe
Varone @ Apr 28th 2008 12:30PM
Why did they have to do this now? In 7 hours time I will have a copy of GTA IV in my hands! It's a good thing the beta has been extended.
Thinking about it, do I really want my first Old Snake experience to be in a moderately good multiplayer beta? I might avoid him until June 12th.
Mr.ESC @ Apr 28th 2008 1:11PM
I'm not buying a PS3 until MGS4 is fully released,hopefully I'll grab a limited edition PS3.
The online mode sounds awesome but tell is it a separate game?
Varone @ Apr 28th 2008 1:34PM
Metal Gear Online will come with Metal Gear Solid 4 and will feature something like 8 levels, and lots of guns. Further content will be added via DLC later.
deaftly @ Apr 28th 2008 2:20PM
Um did I miss something? I thought it was confirmed that mgs4 and mgo are will be sold separate.
el serpiente @ Apr 28th 2008 2:49PM
Yeah, you missed something.
MarkHawk @ Apr 28th 2008 2:53PM
I heard they were separate as well. I'll ask Joystiq Podcast for help.
Eggy @ Apr 28th 2008 2:56PM
Varone are right. MGS4 will include the MGO starterpack (5 maps) and later on DLC will be released for it.
LiK @ Apr 28th 2008 1:56PM
yawn.
jason w @ Apr 28th 2008 2:35PM
I played it lastnight for the first time. After getting 2 new user names and downloading 2 updates I jumped online... Damn I wish I hadnt. I ran like I was in Lost Planet but with no snow to make it seem reasonable. Some dude knocked me out and a joystiq popped out of my dudes ass online and told me to waggle the left stick. I turned into a box several times when I didnt mean to (hit the wrong button) and couldnt find the cool looking catapult thing.
This game is in no way realistic. Not even splinter cell so so realism on the online games.
PointyThings @ Apr 28th 2008 2:38PM
Right because realism is the only thing that makes anything remotely fun.
Honestly I was really disappointed when I first played it, everything was stiff, the controls were an enigma, but after the Novice training I got better. Now I'm anywhere from 1st to 4th place in the ranks at the end of the game. It takes some getting used to, definitely, but once you get skills figured out it's a blast, at least for me.
I say give it another shot, you might totally dig it.
deaftly @ Apr 28th 2008 2:18PM
Anyone else with and extra code? Pleeeaaassee?
Brucie B @ Apr 28th 2008 2:19PM
Can you say what a Disappointment!
el serpiente @ Apr 28th 2008 2:50PM
I'm sure your mother says it all the time.
PointyThings @ Apr 28th 2008 2:32PM
Good lord, I expected so little of this game going into it, but I've been having a ridiculously good time playing it. This is too cool, I think I'm actually going to buy it when it comes out.
Watch your back for PointyThings, he might cut you with a knife.
Emophia @ Apr 28th 2008 2:45PM
I'm definatly with you, when I went in, after watching the trailers and the whole Konami servers fiasco, I though the game was going to be mediocre at best. But now I love it.Oh, and playing as snake in teh sneak mode rocks.haven't tried the Mk 2 yet.
brisknrocket @ Apr 28th 2008 10:16PM
Oh i've seen you in a game! GameID- Walterio
Kiltman67 @ Apr 28th 2008 3:29PM
I'd love to play Midtown Maelstrom... But I'd also love to play Gronznyj Grad. The automatching only wants me to play Blood Bath though.
I REALLY want to like the game but the controls are just terrible.
Collision detection is ridiculous, when you and someone else are standing inches apart each throwing the butt of your rifle at each other just for no contact to occur.
And the lock on only seems to lock on occassionally. Nothing quite like standing a metre from someone, square on, rifle pointed and it refuses to lock on.
I thought the point of an online beta was that the gameplay themselves were pretty much complete and they just wanted to test how the multiplayer functions in the real world. Instead we have to jump through hoops to play some bug ridden POS
Kiltman67 @ Apr 28th 2008 3:32PM
Oh, and while I'm in a ranting mood...
Why can't I run?
I know there's a Fast Move skill but all it seems to do is allow you to walk ever so slightly faster then the crawl you already move at.
I literally get bored moving from one location to another it takes so long.
Ralan @ Apr 28th 2008 5:26PM
If someone wants to be very leet and has an extra code, I would graciously accept; kaletheshadow_at_gmail_dot_com
Kayel @ Apr 29th 2008 4:32AM
Sony sent out codes to at least some of the members of the Gamer Advisory Panel that didn't pre-order MGS4.
