Ubisoft announced today that the next installment in the Prince of Persia franchise will release by holiday '08. The game, at this time simply called Prince of Persia (not Prince of Persia Prodigy), is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal (Assassin's Creed and the PoP: Sands of Time trilogy) and will launch on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
According to the publisher, this new Prince of Persia "is opening a new chapter in the Prince of Persia universe" and will feature a new breed of gameplay "poised to rejuvenate the action-adventure genre." The company also states the game will introduce an "illustrative art style." The DS isn't left out in all this, as it'll receive a game -- albeit one with a different storyline and new characters. With a holiday release confirmed, we'll be sure to get some hands-on time with the game at E3.

And im also interested in what new style theyl take on gameplay, maybe something learned from AC,or more platform or action ,they will probably show something on minE3.

It pretty much was the next step from Two thrones.
Interestingly people had exactly the same issues with it as Sands of Time. A lot of people enjoyed both for the acrobatics and sensation of running around. Others found both repetitive and criticised the combat and other additional elements.*
So I fully expect assasin's creed 2: leather vixens and hard rock edition.
*this second set of people were WRONG.

hopefully they won't make it free roaming. Just multiple routes through linear levels please.

Awesome. This genre doesn't seem to get too much attention. Now two games of similar type coming at the end of the year (TR:Underworld being the other).

Gotta put this old horse to rest...
The concept art looks nice but we all know the games not gonna look/feel ANYTHING like it. If they wanted to do something different conceptually they would...i dunno...make a new IP. Then again, I agree with the Assassins Creed comment above me. Even making new Ips doesn't seem to force the creative hand anymore.

Indeed.
Actually the combat in Warrior Within wasn't too bad, once you got the hang of it... but it did completely miss the point that PoP isn't ABOUT combat. I also liked the fact that SoT seperated out the platforming and the combat.. so you didn't end up having to re-do half a level because some monster killed you when you were trying to balance on a beam.
Still, as long as they remember the point of PoP this should be good. SoT is definitely in my top ten games list.

Brawl and MK vs. DC have put me in the mood for crossovers... I'm thinking "Prince of Persia vs. 50 Cent: Blood on the Sands of Time." Now THAT would rejuvenate the action-adventure genre.

I dunno. It looks like David Levy's style so I'd google his personal website first.

I just started replaying the "original" (2003) PoP on my Wii (via GC back compat rather). What a phenomenal game it is/was! I would give Ubi $60 to sell me this game with fresh graphics, actually. The fact that they're making a new game is just more enticement. I wasn't a big fan of the second PoP and I never finished the third (though it seemed better...) but the first of the remade PoPs is still probably in my top ten games of all time.

How much do you want to bet that it's going to have free-roaming "sandbox"-style gameplay? It seems only natural, though also very likely the core gameplay would suffer horrendously from the move.
I was a big, throbbing, slippery fan of the Sands of Time (not so much the goth-emo Warrior Within or the pseudo-badass Two Thrones), so i hope they keep the core gameplay and not try to add too much extra and end up ruining their icon. We all saw what happened to our beloved blue hedgehog.

Actually, I think free roaming could be a great idea. I'd be happy if they jetisoned the combat entirely, and just made it about running through the environment... but that would be much better if you could choose your routes, rather than being stuck on a linear one.

I love PoP, yes even the last one with the dark rock music. You know, after you got over how bad of a choice the music was, the game itself was pretty darn good. Who's with me here?

Seriously though. Warrior Within (the 2nd one, with the loud rock music) wasn't a bad game once you got past the horrible opening levels and the first boss fight. It actually had some pretty good ideas. It did however lose most of the "magic" from the first game.
The 3rd one was a reasonable attempt to blend the two.. but it just didn't quite excite me as much as Sands of Time. the first one is still by far the best.

I can imagine a Prince of Persia game using the Scimitar (Assassin's Creed's) engine being really awesome.

No Wii love? Hmm, I suspect not.
Ah well, will consider the PC version if the specs aren't as ridiculous as Assassin's Creed.
