I use it, I love it. You can make mistakes a little more easily with it, like drifting the wrong way, but I think that's just cause I've used Gamecube controllers for so long and the wheel is a new thing for me.

What are peoples thoughts on doing tricks without using a Wii wheel? The tricks really help create seperation (which I guess is not always a good thing.)?!?!?!?

You can do tricks easily without the wheel just shake both hands like you are playing Maracas (sp?).

Personally I don't like the wheel and prefer the precision of the joystick. My son LOVES the wheel. I think it's a device for people that aren't used to using pressure sensitive joysticks (i.e the demographics the Wii are trying to grab).

Been playing with the Wii Wheel. It took a little bit to get 'adjusted' to the amount of control needed to turn and such. But, I have to say... it is a lot of fun. It brings a new element to a great series. I don't know if I'd like the game as much, if it didn't have the motion sensing support.

Put me in the category of "In the market for another wheel."
I have used it primarily, and love it!

My wife really likes it too, so here I come new wheel.

I gave it an evening of use and it faired OK with my wife and I. I am just cautious to keep using it or try another option... On one hand the wheel is innovative and fun but another option may give me more precision and better racing.
I think the wheel is definitely good for Automatic more than Manual.
A nice stand would be an idea. Stick it on the floor, hand a spot that hooks on the whe wheel, that way you are not moving the wheel left and right as much. It would give you a general "turning the wheel" feel.

Tried it, loved it then bought a second one.

It may not be the most efficient control scheme but it's just fun to use, which i think is what the Wii is all about.

I skipped the testing stage, and left sam's club with mario kart and three extra (total of four) wheels- It has the best-feeling button in videogaming on the back- GREAT CONTROLLER. Some may enjoy the other schemes, but that's their preference. Feel free to race with the other schemes, just leave me a wheel.

I used it until I started losing Grand Prix races on 100cc because it wasn't precise enough. I'll probably use it for playing friends and such, but not for the more serious races.

I bought an additional wheel when I picked up the game. It has been more fun in a multiplayer setting, and I can see it as part of a party atmosphere. It's definitely an innovative and different feel. For one or two people, however, my wife and I just didn't like it.

The nunchuck/Wiimote option for me seems to be the most playable at this point without reverting to the Wavebird.

I love the wheel. I am going to go out later today and buy two more one for the wife and one for my son. For most it may be a bit odd at first but I have been playing other Wii racing games that use a side ways remote for steering and this just improves on that idea. I am looking forward to also using the wheel for future racing games. Maybe next a racing sim that uses the wheel (hint hint Nintendo).

I used the wheel right out of the box with very low hopes.. but I do have to say it works!! Now I am not saying i'm going to use this 24/7 the Gamecube controller works much better (sorry wheel fans) but having a Kart party at the house split screen with all the people rocking a wheel will be a lot of fun. The controller can pinpoint turns and drifting better, but like I said the wheel works.. and much better than i would have guessed. (I just would not risk my 5000 points online to it)

Funny, but I'm just shy of 5500 points and I've used nothing but the wheel. I haven't won every race, but I'm still doing decent. I'm also being beat by other people using wheels as well, or at least with wheel icons.

I bought two additional wheels and their primary use is for entertaining guests. We started using the wheels for grand prixs but switched to the gamecube controller because of the lack of precision. Although, I like using the wheel more because of its increased entertainment value.

tried all the control schemes and for me and my GF the GC controller is still the most precise... however the wheel is a LOT more fun. So when we're going for unlocks or doing some serious competition (who has to do dishes etc.) it's analog stick ftw. but when we just want to play a little, or if we're leveling the field for some less obsessive guests the wheel is perfect. It's also easier to pickup and start playing at a decent level for someone who's never played mario kart before (i.e. parents who bought their own wii cuz I got tired of them taking mine to play wii sports).

Tried the wheel, and saw some of the drift issues that other did. Then I decided to try Nunchuck/Wiimote, and was hooked. You get the precision of the GC controller, and the quick response for tricks/wheelies of the wheel (just shake the Wiimote). Plus the button scheme for it is set up so all of your fingers are already over the buttons you need.

My family bought 2 Wii wheels along with Mario Kart and we desperately tried to have fun with them but ... hah. Physical hand-eye coordination must not be too good because we sucked big time with the thing.

Now, the little guys of the family (6 and 9) absolutely enjoy the wheel and play fairly well with it. I just didn't like it because I couldn't DO ANYTHING in the realm of freaking...rationality with it. If I can't control the kart, it's no fun. But I'm old and apparently conservative. *sad*

I used the wheel when I first booted it up and found it to be a lot of fun. It had some issues but nothing to big. My only real issue is holding weapons behind you just is a lot more comfortable on the gc then the wii wheel. That said I went through all the 50ccs and most of the100s with the wheel while the 150 I didnt even try with the wheel.

Ill use the wii wheel when Im just trying to have fun but most serious stuf Ill stick with the gc controller.

The wii wheel? I friggin LOVE it. Took me all of 5 minutes to get used to it, and before I knew it, I was drifting and doing super turbos like a pro. I spent at least 5 hours playing it yesterday, and I havent even tried any of the other controller options yet, and I probably wont for a while.

The wheel is addictive, people. 5/5 for my rating. I plan to get 3 more today.

Honestly, at first... I felt like I was impaired by it. I didn't think I was racing nearly as well as I could with a joystick.

But by the time I finished all the cups in 50 cc, it was like second nature, and actually made the whole mario kart experience a lot more like driving.. it was just more immersive and was simply more entertaining.

Once I figured out when to shake the controller to do tricks, I must say, it was all great from then on out.

I think the loads of wii wheel icons you see online above people's heads also is a testimate to it's popularity. It's amazing how a nicely build shell that is weighted can make the gameplay all that much better.

I'm very happy I tried it and stayed with it instead of dismissing it in the first few races for being a burdon. I'm very happy with it and I recommend it to anyone. If anything, it made me realize how little sites play games before writing reviews because the sites that did not like the wheel very much (like joystiq) seemed to only test the controll method on a few tracks. it's a shame that review sites can actually persuad people into thinking a game's control is good or bad when they don't even put enough time into it themselves to figure it out fully.

I picked up an additional wheel when I picked up the game at Target yesterday morning.

I am having fun with the wheel, and have not yet tried out the other control options. While I was playing online(!) yesterday, I noticed that 11 of the 12 people playing were using the wheel.

My only issue is that for some reason, the 'B' trigger is unresponsive some times. I keep checking to see that I have it inserted into the wheel correctly, so I am continually pushing down on the remote to make sure it is lodges in place.

The only thing I can think of is that I have the Nyko ChargeStation, and it has those rubberized battery covers...those could be adding just enough to keep them from seating properly.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I had that issue too, just press it in harder and it will be all snug. The b trigger is supposed to be loose, so dont worry.. you'll get used to it, it works well with the nyko covers :)

Hey Orion -

Thanks for the suggestion. I keep pressing down on the remote to make sure that it is in there all the way, and it still feels a little too loose. It's a real drag when you start a power slide and nothing happens.

yea no problem bud. If you just go ahead and press it in so that the wiimote's IR camera would be in line with the black window in the wii wheel you should be fine. it's not going to be flush with the wii wheel (it's not supposed to be), but there should only be a centimeter or so of raise on the wiimote vs the wii wheel.

A good indicator if it's in all the way or not is to look at th eback of the wii wheel. If the rubber nyko charger cover is flush with the back of the wii wheel's release hole in the back, that's as far as it will go.

That worked for me, lemme know if it works.. should be a failsafe wait of seeing if it's in all the way or not.

I thought i'd add one more thing..:

If there is a testimate on how welcoming the wii wheel is to casual gamers, I have proof right here.

My mother, who back in the day couldn't even play mario brothers on the NES because it was too hard (seriously.. she couldn't jump over pits), and who has only been able to play games like donkey konga and dance dance revolution, ACTUALLY DID WELL IN THIS.

I can't express to all of you how dumb struck I was when my mother got first place in the first two tracks in the mushroom cup on 50CC. I know that's easy for everyone else, but you have to understand this is a woman who couldn't so much as play mario... she hates games with a passion and honestly doesn't get them at all. While i can understand how she is good at Wii Play and enjoys that, I was simply shocked that not only did she have fun (which is rare to her with games) but she actually won the races with only about 20 seconds of simple instructions on how the wii wheel worked (she even figured out how to do the items with the dpad in all it's directions!!!!).

I think this shows how amazing this system really is. I have ben trying to get my mother to play games since the NES and Atari Pong system I had when I was a kid, and now she is actually not only playing but enjoying herself.

Thanks to the wii wheel, my mother can actually play a "hardcore" game. Thank you Nintendo!

Heck, i thought i might even stay with that control scheme but wen i went online, i found that my performance was sort of limited wen i used it. My friends convinced me to use the nunchuck controls and i found them much better. I wouldn't use the wii wheel online but yes for some fun matches with family and friends.

This was the first game the spouse was interested in even though we've had the Wii for about a year; she was a huge Double Dash fan and is always on her DS but just wasn't into the Wii.

She didn't like the wheel. As someone who's only picked up the Wii controller a couple of times, I was really surprised that after trying the wheel and then the Wiimote by itself, she preferred the Wiimote.

I was ambivalent on the wheel. I actually liked the extra heft, and it was easier to manually drift with the big button than B by itself. But the wrist strap was constraining to me when I used the wheel, whereas it felt OK when I used the Wiimote by itself. We haven't tried other control methods.

So my family's verdict on the wheel: meh.
