I have a 60gb version, I got past some first freezes in the game in the beginning, and then all went smooth, but as I came arround 45% of finishing the game it all went bad, all save games died on me, no more starting up the game in total... even on startup it blocks, so it's impossible to play this game..... the further you get the buggier it gets...

I suggest not to waste time playing on this game untill they fixed it, all your precious time playing will be lost! I'm sick of spending my holiday for over a week on this game, and above all, i played 8 to 12 hours a day... so all lost.... rockstar you guys suck! this is a major bug, one of the most bad bugs I ever encountered, they let us wait for 6 extra months, and then the game doesn't even work proper...

I want my money back and everybody should do this maybe then they would feel how painfull this is for us spending all our time in a game that doesn't even work proper...

After spending 45 minutes on hold (thank god for speaker phone!) I got through to someone. Apparently GTA IV is having some serious issues with running while PS3 is hooked up to internet. This workaround might work with xbox, but I don't have one to test it :)

So, currently, if you want to play your game without freezing up, it is as simple as unplugging the network cable or shutting off wireless connection. Since I unplugged my PS3 from network, GTA IV works great! HTH~

PS-I figure I'll be the nice guy (or gal!! :P ) and post the fix in places where people can get the message without spending 45 minutes on hold (and that is after being told they had too many calls and to call back later multiple times!!) It doesn't seem like anyone else who has this info is nice enough to share it! To those people...c'mon! this world would be a much better place without so much apathy.

Well on the PS3 there seems to be three major issues:

Locking on 1st scene

Random Locks

Multiplayer

I have the 1st, loads then I some times see Niko at a door sometimes not, sound plays, but no control. Can not skip. Have to turn system off to get it back.

Tried all the THIS FIXS IT crap, none work.

So will see if the patch helps me and the ones like me or just helps thoses that can play with random issues.

Ok, so after 4 crashes (all during in-car action), deleting game data, deleting save data, 3 reinstalls, unplugging the ethernet cable, formatting my HD, waiting 24 hours and trying again, my BD drive has failed. Now, I'm stuck with a PS3 (60GB launch model) which won't read disks at all, not even music CDs!

The mission that casued the grief was "out of the closet", or at least, that was the last mission I managed to get past without freezing. I never got to try the online side of things.

Oh, and just to annoy me even more, my PS3 went out of warranty just 2 weeks ago! I hope to hell Sony are gonna do some serious sucking up to their loyal customers.

Does anyone know if there is a list out there if people who've had their PS3 die on them after playing GTA IV? I would like to join it...

The reason for the delay was not because of freezing issues....but space allocation on the 360. The in depthness of the game was too big for 360

My 60gb PS3 bought in Septmber last year was P-E-R-F-E-C-T until I bought GTA IV... Now I it makes a weird churning noise when I try to start a game, and thats when I have done the complete 3hr 55mins RESTORE! plus backups and what-not. I can't even play spiderman3 anymore ¬_¬

I'm NO fan*girl* but before I sold my 360, I had not one problem with it (I just wanted the money for something else lol) now I want a 360 again, because gaming online isn't important to me, neither is the brand of the console!! I want to play fun games regardless of who made the bloody console! geez can't people stop bashing each other over who's gotth best console!!! argh it's so stupid!

STOP BEING UNGRATEFUL.

IF IT WERN'T FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THESE CONSOLES
YOU WOULD STILL BE PLAYING WITH YOUR LEGO!!!!!

nurghhhhh!

Yeah it's not just on the 60GB I have a 40GB and it froze at the loading screen. The only solution for PS3 players is to sign out of the PS Network and that fixes the problem. So no deleting your game or anything like that.

Phew, Sony are replacing my PS3 even though it's out of warranty! Unfortunately though, I have to say goodbye to the 60GB version and get a 40GB version with 3 games as compensation. I didn't use it for PS2 games anyway so that ok with me. I guess i'll try to play GTA IV on the new system but if it crashes even once, i'll wait for the patch.

Tried deleting install data. Afterwards it froze during opening credits.

I have a 40gb PS3 and was experiencing a problem. GTA would freeze at the loading screen...I fixed it by disabling the internet connection in my network settings
Just temporary until there is a fix...

GTA is freezing on the 40GB PS3 aswell.
However, deleting the gamedata is not a solution, didnt work for me.

Its probably something with the saves (or CD?)
When i play on my saves the game freezes, however when my brother plays (on a different PS3 user and different save, but same console) it works fine.

Freezing started when i finished about ~20% of the game.

If everyone who is having problem with the patch and gta4 , would jst return the game or trade it for somthing else , you would actually see a real fix in mo time .. AThat company just made 600 million dollars , do they care that much , like really ????? Anyways , I traded mine for a game that actually works .. There is value in that

I have 60GB PS3 with this problem...it freezes before I start the first mission! Talk about disappointment!

Here is the FIX...DISABLE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION via PS3 console.

Tada...however, this sucks as I wish to play multiplayer some day (which is FREE on PS3!)

I have a Canadian Launch PS360gig... NONE of these "fixes" work. Disabling your network connection does not resolve the freezing during gameplay issue. I get 10 minutes maximum into the game then it craps out....

well yeah... i just fucked up jeff's mission at about 37% when you have to follow his wifey and take some photos of them...
my mate drove to close and the mission was failed, then inbetween sparkin another joint up and comin back to the game, we noticed the look was frozen.

the game engine, rage or whatever was still working fine... it was jus the camera was locked so that it was 3rd person from about where i crashed.

all i could see once I finally got him back in the camera view, was niko prancin around an runnin round the street past the camera, and back again...

not a crash as such, the game didnt need rebooting, just a reload after tryin the obvious things like getting in a taxi, tryin to phone somebody.. no such luck.

nothing lost, but still, if you arent happy with these glitches, then consumer rights mean you can get a refund off the supplier or rockstar as the product is faulty.
But, then again, i dont really care. works great for me now.

i cant believe rockstar tell you to jus start the game again as a solution (or does that fault only occur at the very start of gameplay?)

and you shouldn't need to delete the savegame anyway, just game data should do. i cant picture why save games would either be corrupt, or influence the engine enough to crash (unless it crashed at the point of loading a game, anything after and the savefiles not to blame).

Keep the save file, keep your percentage, delete game data. try that, before deleting both. deleting both is a bit daft.
