80gb PS3
No problem so far. Played the single player for about 4-5 hours
(in three different occasions), and just tested the multi-player
but didn't play it.

To PS3Fanboy: These stats are misleading because the're were 2 issues: 1) locking freeze, and 2) multiplayer online access. It is typical for PS3 online games to take a couple of days to adjust for unanticipated demand. I own the game, could not connect online on day 1 but could on day 2. I beleive this online issue is resolved.
The way your question if formulated, those experiencing online connection issues on day 1 would be included in the stats.

I was experiencing brief pauses in both the game and video scenes every 5 to 10 seconds. The solution that Lumpee posted above (signing out of PSN) solved my issue completely. I've informed take2games tech support (official GTA IV customer support) about this.

I hung 3 times in the bowling min-game. The music keeps playing for a while, but the video froze. I played in a different alley and no problem.

Unlike most of you with the problem, I have an 80GB PS3, with a new 120 GB hard drive.

Using the 80gb i get occasionaly lockups. No more than 10seconds at a time. Problem happens probably about once an hour. It's not really a big deal, but it is annoying and would be cool if it could be fixed in a patch.

ihatebioshock Idk what game you have been playing but the jaggies in gta4 are not all that bad.might have your sharpness level to high or something. The framerate drop i seen is when their is alot of traffic and umm killing going on.As far as game freezing up it locked up twice on me first for 4 secs the second about 6. Their are bugs in games like this i can totaly over look it.I Also think it has something to do with the disks more then the ps3 itself.Quite sure rockstar did testing on all the sku's.Fact is they had to mass produce the disks for damand quit sure something happend their. As far as framerate goes you can blame the 360 on this.I really hope they put GTA5 or w/e as a ps3 lead platform simply because every ps3 has a hdd and blu-ray.Games like this show wheir the 360 lacks, may not be the FX but in terms of storeage the Ps3 has it beat.Another thing if u own a 360 u should have the 20 gig Sku's The arcade and core packages are just stupid, on a next-gen system. If the old xbox had a 8 gig hdd why doesn't every 360 have at least that? It's ok tho Haze and Mgs4 soon will kick alot of ass. Not flaming the 360 just think games like this belong on the ps3.

Jaggies aren't 'that bad' no, I've seen worse, it's the combinatoin of the poor frame rate (75% of the time, just swinging the camera around is laggy) and mostly the BLURRY graphics that are giving me a headache (the 640p thing / scaling most likely) + ROckstars grain filter or whatever.

Anyhow the game underneath is great, been playing for a few hours this afternoon, kept trying to get across to algonquin but man those cops go wild, almost made it inland but nah.. avoided them for a good ten minutes.

SO many neat touchs in the game, I just want to experience in something approaching visual clarity. It's hurting the experience majorly by being scaled up or lower res and with a poor frame rate.

So i'm going to put cheat codes in, see the cool areas/shows watch some more TV and then sell it for a PROFIT (I got it less than retail price) and wait for the PC version on my fast PC, if a PC version doesn't come then I can handle it, my interest for this game was mostly for the world in which it's set rather than purely gameplay so I'll just keep waiting until some developer pulls off a virtual new york properly... may be some years yet ;)

Enjoy the game though everyone who's not bothered by slow frames and blurry/aliased graphics, it's definitely a good game beyond that.

Oh and aside from the 640p/scaled up thing, my comments aren't really platform specific. Same applies to both version in that the consoles can't quite pull it off to my satisfaction but then i'm obviously hard to please ;)

I agree with you, the PS3 has some great games and more on the way. They just need to be tailored to the spec of the console(s) better and not push things too far. There are good examples of good graphics + great performance out there on both systems so I can't accept less than that now regardless of scope of the game.

I have a 60GB PAL European launch console. The game froze twice within an hour of play and I could not connect to the multiplayer on release day. The game froze a couple more times but refreshed itself about 10 seconds later. One more seemingly permanent freeze and I decided to turn the console off. April 30th, I try connecting to multiplayer about three times to no avail, but then successfully connect and create my own Free Roam match. I stayed in it for about 7 hours solid - simply amazing experience. I thought the issue was resolved and I hear that Rockstar* did fix the issue at about the same time that I managed to conncet yesterday, but today I cannot connect again, and I must have pressed O and X about 1000 times already. Looks like they didn't fix it as well as they thought. Multiplayer never froze and worked to perfection in the time that I got to use it. So I guess it is down for a lot of people again, today, May 1st.

40gb no upgrades
Stutters when there is a lot of on screen action, has frozen on 6+ occasions. I reinstalled the game data and the stuttering/freezing happens less often, but it still occurs.
I've only played for ~5 hours.
Still haven't even been able to get online for multiplayer one single time. I'm starting to get pissed.

Yes, and I use the non-60GB PS3 (please specify in comments) - In fact, I have few freezes (15 secondes max) from time to time. My PS3 is a 40Gb, recently changed (bluray drive was dead). I'm in France.

But it is not a real problem (never had to do a reset) :)

After reading some of the post I guess I'm not the only one experiencing like a motion blur, I thought it was my LCD (SCEPTRE x22wg-Gamer) but I guess its the game. Any one has a way to minimize this?

Yes, 60GB PS3. I was able to get through 30% of the story, now when I try to launch the game, the game freezes during the loading screen, after the intro art. The HDD light is solid green and does not flash to indicate work, yet the loading screen and ring continue to loop.

HERE IS A THING THAT MIGHT FIX YOUR ISSUES:
(worked for my 20gb ps3!)

Just delete, then reinstall the game utility information (the 3gb it saves on at the start). Then reinstall it.
Your problems should be solved!

So, I've finally had an issue...

About 10 hours into the story I went back to a safe house and saved the game by that method for the first time. I quit the game, and go to work, hours later when I restart the game I can't get past a loading screen. I accidently delete my saved progress first (of course), then my profile. I restart the game and realize that I haven't deleted the game data at all since there is no install going on, but the game starts and works on for 1 hour before locking up for my first in-game freeze. I've now deleted the installed game data and all seems to be well. Time will tell I suppose.

had loads of problems with the game freezing and not working at all at one point. tryed erasing all gta 4 content off ps3 60G. still didn't work.
i tryed loading it with the ps3 signed off the playstation network and it worked fine. just have to sign in while your playing the game. seems to be working fine now. I think the online feature is the course of the problem.

screw what i said earlier. That method works if you delete the data, then play the game. But as soon as you turn off the game and start it again the same things happen.

The only other thing i have found is signing out of the PSN then starting the game. Just dont try multiplayer, because the second you sign on it will freeze. At least for me it did.
I expect... No... I require a fix for this PSN issie from Rockstar. Soon!

i recently having problems now on my 80GB PS3. Now, whenever i start a game and it loads and then it shows the black loading screen it takes a long time and eventually never loads my saved data to be able to play and its killing me inside that i'm gotten so far in the game that i'm may have to consider deleting everything i saved and that's something i DO NOT want to be doing.

does anyone have any other ideas what to do to fix that problem, insted of deleting my saved gameplay?

Go read my earlier comment, which is to access the "game data utility" under the 'games' menu in the ps3. Then delete the gta file in there. It DOES NOT DELETE YOUR SAVED DATa! Only problem is that you will have to reinstall it every time you play the game.
other option is to sign out of the PSN. That works as well. Try resigning in in the game. But that froze mine.

I have a 60gb launch PS3, which has had no problems to date, until...

Played GTA4 every day since launch, with about 20 hours progress (and lots of multiplayer games), before I had any technical issues. Saturday evening, I had the same loading screen sticking which others seem to have experienced, along with a handful of freezes. I tried the fix (and some of the random suggestions online), but it didn't help. Now I've let my PS3 calm down overnight, I re-installed and started again, but this time, the music stops erratically and the next time I pause the game, the map refuses to load up and the game freezes.

I figured it might be a cache issue, so threw in some other games, but now Oblivion has sound issues too (which it never had before), whilst GT5 Prologue, Uncharted and Skate work fine.

Its a shame, because GTA was proving to be fantastic up until that point.
