Chart-Track estimates Grand Theft Auto IV sold 609,000 units on its launch day in the UK, which eclipses GTA: San Andreas' 2004 first-day record of 501,000 units. GI.biz reports the game also broke records among the two consoles it's available on, with the Xbox 360 and PS3 selling 335,000 and 274,000 units respectively. The former records belonged to Halo 3 with 266,000 and GT5: Prologue with 80,000 units sold on day one.
The "official" Chart-Track sales data will release on May 6, with the current data being based on electronic point of sale and retailer estimates. We're still waiting for Take-Two to send out a press release trumpeting its global success.

So much for the launch of Halo 3 being the biggest day in media ever.

It will in time.
Anyway, not bad sales figures considering the the 360/PS3 install base ration.... about 2:1

All I was saying that all these websites were saying how the PS3 version was so heavily outselling the 360 version over there and it wasn't.

The best lunch day selling BS3 exclusive only sold 80,000 units, pitiful, just pitiful. Anyway kudos to GTA IV for selling so well on it's lunch day.

Is there a reason you spell "launch" as "lunch"?

Oh I see...I also find it strange that GT5P only sold 80,000. Is that only including retail copies? I can't imagine that downloads of it would be higher then the retail copy...

"twice?"
That was why I questioned it...I can understand a typo or two, but two exact same typos of the same word?
I guess that's understandable

Ted it's actually larger when you take into account the proportion of the population who play games... but I know what you mean. AND YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN! o_O

The Royal family are a kind of running gag though lol.
But I guess they're one of the most recognisable things about us to people overseas. Apart from the teletubbies, dr who and amy whorehouse lol

55% to 360, 45% to PS3. That's pretty close to the Joystiq pole.
Fanboy comment: Considering that GTA was THE playstation game last generation, this is quite an emasculation of PS by MS. Or shall I say MSculation! Oh, where is Ludwig when I need him.

Whats odd is that the PS3 outsells the 360 in the UK, but GTA4 managed to do better on the 360. Looks like folk do value DLC and higher resolutions after all!

actually hunt, the 360 has a 2 to 1 console overall lead in the UK, so the number isn't surprising, actually i'm surprised its so close to be honest i mean you're comparing 2.2 million consoles to 1.2 or 1.3 million (360 vs PS3) so it to be within 10% of each other between the 2 consoles is actually kind of amazing if you ask me.
Now europe as a whole may be a different story with the PS3 gaining steadily (as a whole) But still a great showing on both consoles by GTA IV
