It probably comes as no shock that Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox Live, believes Grand Theft Auto IV could very well take the top spot on Live from the see-saw battle waged between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3. Greenberg tells Reuters that the multiplayer is so well implemented in GTA IV that he can't imagine anyone who owns a copy of the game not trying it on Xbox Live.
Greenberg goes on to say that GTA IV appeals to such a large audience and it'll probably be the best-selling game launched all year. GTA's multiplayer is certainly a different experience from COD 4 and Halo's first-person perspective, and could easily take the top spot on Live with curious players testing it, but whether the game's multiplayer is actually deep enough to hold on to players remains to be seen.

It hasn't exactly been a see-saw battle. COD4 has been the top Live game for almost 4 months straight. Not even the Legendary Map pack could push Halo to #1.
I think GTAIV will take the top spot at least for a week or two but once people stop playing the single player(which still counts towards the stats) COD4 will take its spot back.

Thank you, I was going to point that out as well - there has been no 'seesaw' battle for a long, long time - Halo 3 was supplanted by CoD4 and it's stayed that way for months.
I think Joystiq was just trying to be nice, and avoid saying Halo 3 'got it's ass kicked.'
All good games though, no real hate - but I'd rather play CoD4 myself.

While I agree that short term that will be the case I still think that there will be a steep drop off in a couple of months as the newness wears off and other titles become available.

Try as I do. I just don't get the multiplayer. Seems unexciting. I have been spoiled by COD4, Gears of War, and Halo3. There is an urgency missing from the whole aspect of it.
On the other hand the single player is phenomenal. I love it. Absolutely all encompassing. If it becomes number one on live it will be short lived IMHO.

nothing like muggin a fool at an ATM and spending it on 3 lap dances then finishing the night off stunt jumping my beater biker up onto hidden ramps inside billboards... then robbing the laundry mat for $200 to start off the next day....

I haven't even tried multiplayer yet, to be honest, and I usually jump into MP right away.

It'd be my top XBL game if I could actually get the connection to work between me and my friends.

The article seems to imply that COD and Halos online gameplay is "deep". Funny stuff guys.

Live's top games lists include all games, so long as you're playing logged in.
Oblivion was the top live game for many weeks back in 2006.

It should be noted that the XBox Live stats do not count multiplayer sessions. It simply counts people playing the game if it be single player, multiplayer, or co-op if the game has that function.
So even if not a single person touches multiplayer it could still take the top spot from these very multiplayer centric games.

this game wont last on top due to the fact of how striped down the game feels if you have played GTA:SA. Now if you have only played GTA3 and never played the versions after that gta will feel like a huge leap in game play and experience.
CoD4 still feels fresh and never stale and GTA really doesnt have that. sure every trillion dollars i make gets me some new clothing i might not try, but nothing exclusive like a new gun or a parachute or a hang glider. If they make stuff like that it might give the a game a boost in terms of replay value.
This sorta turned in to a little review but gameplay:8 (nothing new aside from expanded multiplayer.[its been done already in gta just not as big]
Graphics/visuals:7/9 very detailed just not the "current gen" graphics
Sound: 10 gta sound tracks kick ass and Bohan sounds and looks just like my home town counter part Bronx!

Personally i don't think the GTA Multiplayer will stay top for long as i don't think its anywhere near as deep.
Only played one game online yesterday before realising i couldn't be bothered. Although i havent had as much fun on a game in ages as when i played free mode on launch day and flew choppers with some friends.
