R-Type Command to include R-9 collectible
If you're looking forward to the upcoming May 6 release of R-Type Command for the PSP, but are wondering where to pick it up, Atlus USA might have just made the decision a tad easier. The company has announced that for a "very limited" time those who buy the game from GameStop, Amazon.com, GameCrazy, EB Games Canada, and other select retailers will be able to take home a free plastic miniature replica of the game's R-9 spacecraft, which we imagine to be perfect for keeping your desktop safe from the Bydo Empire.

That's actually a pretty good collectible.
FrankTheCrank @ May 1st 2008 9:29AM
Oh yeah, this is mine. Just got my PSP yesterday. Haven't even hooked it up to my PS3 yet. I was too busy playing SF Alpha...love it.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 9:59AM
Like several other collectables of recent memory, it's just doing a repaint of one coin figures from Japan.
From this series actually.

This is why Japan is the promise land for nerds. They get this, and we get Homiez.
Jonathan Tran @ May 1st 2008 9:22AM
Very nice!
Jerk Face @ May 1st 2008 9:29AM
Definitely better than a lot of the collector's edition crap that's out there. Not too shabby.
Though I fail at R-Type games. R-Type 3 was so hard that it made me pee blood for two weeks after playing it on the VC. I seriously couldn't beat the first level. Like, really.
FrankTheCrank @ May 1st 2008 9:30AM
Just watch your ship....don't watch the action to the left or the top...just watch your ship and it's surrounding...and dodge the hell out of all those bullets. Great stuff.
Jerk Face @ May 1st 2008 9:34AM
I think its the added complexity of being able to use your ship's attachment thingy to do different stuff that distracts me. It's like too many options for me or something. I'd rather have a shmup where the only thing you have to worry about is blasting the shit out of everything with increasingly powerful beams and shit; and not about which configuration your shit is in.
Or maybe I am just a big pussy. Also a distinct possibility!
iofthestorm @ May 1st 2008 9:43AM
Haha, I couldn't pass the first level either, but then I was playing it on an emulator on my DS.
FrankTheCrank @ May 1st 2008 9:45AM
No, some of those Japanese shooters are a real bitch, so don't feel bad.
Sometimes I just get in this "zone" and all of a sudden, I'm dodging like hundreds, if not thousands of bullets. I don't know how I do it, I just do. Must be all that training from the Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Asteroid days.
FOXHOUND @ May 1st 2008 10:12AM
Jerk Face---
It's for that reason alone that I'm glad games like IKARUGA were never released on handheld. I'd end up throwing the PSP/DS through the wall in frustration. It's one of those "Love-to-Hate" type of games for me. So amazing and cool for a shooter title... but damn, if it isn't one of the hardest I've played.
baby sea tuna @ May 1st 2008 9:33AM
Drool. Too bad I don't have a PSP...also that I suck at Japanese shoot-em-ups.
rikki @ May 1st 2008 9:36AM
That pre-order bonus makes me wish I actually wanted the game.
Jerk Face @ May 1st 2008 9:46AM
Ha ha... nice! : )
sukigod @ May 1st 2008 9:42AM
I don't have a PSP (or plan to buy one) but I want this thing BAD! This is one of my favorite games from the old arcade coin-op era aand this would be soooo cool.
Dang - ebay away I guess....
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 9:55AM
Okay, before anyone things R-Type Command is like all the other R-Types, keep in mind, this game was called R-Type Tactics in Japan. It's a turn based strategy game and here is the trailer...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-Msebid87c
Personally, I like the look of it. But just giving the warning to those thinking this is like other R-Types.
Nate @ May 1st 2008 10:16AM
Good post, Fidlious. I was going to point that out too. This is not a shoot'em'up, it's a space-based tactical combat game. There's a demo on the PC store for it, looks pretty cool.
FrankTheCrank @ May 1st 2008 12:59PM
Yeah, excellent point.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to squash my pre-order. Strategy based games aren't my thing.
deaftly @ May 1st 2008 10:06AM
A psp game that I actually might buy now.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 10:13AM
I have several...
In fact, I think I'm over 40.
Nate @ May 1st 2008 10:17AM
Heh, yeah, finding games I want to buy on the PSP is not the problem, it's finding money for them all.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ May 1st 2008 10:26AM
way to lower the bar
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 10:26AM
Here's my secret to that... WAIT.
Seriously. I knew I would have a blast with portable Dynasty Warriors (yes, I'm one of those people who actually PLAY that series), but not at $40. Most PSP games I snag are at $10-$20. Unless it's an import, I usually snag it on the cheap. Of course some exemptions exist like Crisis Core and Field Commander...
My problem now is not having PSP games, but the time to beat them.
baby sea tuna @ May 1st 2008 10:34AM
40?! I can think of maybe 7 or 8 solid PSP titles, but I've already beaten several of them and many are already available on various other platforms. I can't possibly imagine having even remote interest in 30-odd more.
Then again, I get that Sheppy is a collector, as well as an importer, so I can understand why he has so many games for PSP and PS3 that most people wouldn't even pick up off the shelf to look at the back of the box. Personally, I still can't justify picking up another PSP (sold my launch model to buy a DS) even after all these years.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 10:43AM
You see, here is the thing. A game for $60 has a high quality bar to pass. It must either be really good, or set in a genre that I really like. A game for $50 may as well be $60 in my "purchase tolerance."
A game at $40 has to be good, just not great. That, or in a genre where I know copies will evaporate and end up on Ebay later for $80+.
A game for $30, my standards start lowering. There still has to be quality there but I won't nitpick.
A game for $20 can be average.
A game for $10 is hard to argue against. Because even if it sucks, you can get most of that back on Goozex or something similar.
Over lunch, if people are interested, I can snap a picture of my PSP rack to show what has made it into my collection. I think I have more PSP games than DS. As for the whole importing thing, I do it on occassion. Like I'm really looking forward to Final Fantasy Fight... errrr, Battle Fantasia.
baby sea tuna @ May 1st 2008 11:05AM
I don't tend to buy a lot of "budget" games. Every once in a while, I'll snag a Bards Tale for $10 or a Feel The Magic for $6 or so, but I tend to stick to mostly AAA titles or solid word-of-mouth sleepers (like Okami or Hulk: Ultimate Destruction). I just don't have the time to put into anything else. I fear and respect your collection, however, Shep. I seem to remember seeing pix of it a while ago.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ May 1st 2008 11:48AM
Oh it's grown since then. Like I added a few classic games and recently got a lot of 100+ Sega Genesis games (currently sorting to find doubles). Last time I took picks, I was a little under 800. I think I'm approaching 1000 now. Craigslist helped me with that Genesis lot. Essentially got $.50 per game but doubles and sports did exist in it. For the most part it was largely a flop but then I found titles like Pirates, Subterrania, Streets of Rage series, a few classicly horrible titles, and the ultimate gem to find in something like that, two working copies of Warsong...
Martez @ May 1st 2008 3:37PM
Hell. I don't even own a PSP and I'll buy this game for that thing! I love R-Type.
Lekko @ May 7th 2008 1:07AM
Wasn't the last game they did called "R-Type FINAL"
...as in the FINAL R-type? I seem to recall that.
