Mother fans, rejoice! EarthBound, also known as Mother 2 and the only game of the series to be released in the US, has been rated by the ESRB for the Wii. While that seems to be a good indication the game is bound for the Virtual Console, we're not going to make that leap without an official confirmation from Nintendo. Besides, given the rabid fan base of the game here, we're half-serious when we say we suspect Nintendo might consider selling the game unchanged for $50 on a disc. We guarantee it would sell like gangbusters.
An ESRB rating is the only outside hurdle the Nintendo-owned property to putting it on the Virtual Console (if that's the route they take). Now wouldn't that make for a clever Mother's Day gift, hm?

Did any of you ever try getting the sword of kings for Poo? I remember doing that, it was like the only weapon he could use and there was a 1:1000 chance of getting it off starmen and you could only get it in that lab place until you beat it. I remember getting it after hours of killing starmen, that was awesome.

I got it once on the cartridge in about an hour's grinding. But even on roms where i can speed up the battle and get instant k o's on starmen supers, i still have yet to get it, and i've probably spent a whole day in game time, sped up, trying.

Incredible game. I'm shocked to see all the hate here: it was, aside from SMRPG, easily the best RPG on the SNES. Its only real flaw was length - too damn short.
And Christ, talk about funniest game ever. Earthbound still has me on the floor laughing every time I play.

There are a lot of excellent SNES RPG's:
Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI (best in the series).

While FFVI is undoubtedly the best in the series, that doesn't necessarily make it good. It's still hindered by an unnecessary excess of party members, an extremely boring magic system, and boring plot. Not to mention are terribly overrated. The fact that the enemies are basically gigantic static portraits 8x the size of your tiny, detailess characters lends a bizarre feeling to the battles and makes you seriously question why the sprites that you have to see in each and every battle are so boring.
I'm not going to start on Chrono Trigger, though it too is somewhat overrated (though still quite good).
Oh and I can't believe I forgot, SMRPG isn't the best SNES RPG. Ogre Battle is. Incredible hidden treasure, that and its successor (the greatest game of all time) OB64 had better come to VC.

I think.... I... I love you......
I have only met like 4 people that have heard of it, let alone played it... Even less have it be their favorite game of all time.....
Debonair and Destin are freaking awesome.

When I was 12 and Debonair joined my party... my head nearly exploded. I've played that game probably 10 times through, just to see all the endings. I'm so disappointed that the series is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

This wasn't out already? Gee Nintendo, take a break off whoring Mario and Donkey kong and actually tend to a franchise that's somewhat original.

Eleniel - Thanks, now I know I need to get this fee. And per Tomoki's asinine comment, yes, 5$ is an exorbiant fee for losers and nerds with enough time to go the hack route or ROM route. God it pisses me off when people complain about 5$ VC titles.

To everybody crying for Mother 3:
Mother 3 = GBA Game.
GBA Games = Not on the VC.
Therefore: Mother 3 = Not on the VC.
Now, I'd like to see Mother 3 (or Earthbound 2, or whatever you might call it) localized for the States, but I doubt it's going to be the first GBA game to hit the VC...

I'm currently playing through Earthbound again (slowly) on my PSP.
Awesome game when it was first released, still is awesome.
Have an Earthbound VC week and I'll (re)buy all of them.

I'd love to see this, but I distinctly remember Super Mario RPG being rated by the ESRB back in November of 2006, and then vanishing off the face of the Earth, news-wise and on ESRB.com. That kind of jaded me.
On the other hand, EB hardly requires permission/intellectual property from a different company for release, so this probably has a much higher chance of Nintendo not yanking the release back out of our grabby hands.

I have never bought a VC game on the Wii but this will change that. It's one of those games i have been meaning to play but did not want to steal online.

As soon as I buy a Wii, I'm buying it. Just to have it. Even though I own it already. I just beat it again like a month or so ago. God, I love it. Hope they put out Mother 3 in NA too, but I doubt they will. Thank god for Tomato and the whole team working on the translation.

If released soon, it would make up for the lack of EarthBound masterpiece in Brawl (since the Japanese version had it...).

Just put it on the DS and save us the trouble of having to use a TV to play a game... I'd rather have Earthbound on the DS so I don't have to waste my tv for a turn based RPG. Keep turn based RPGs on handhelds people.

Meh. The game is mediocre at best. Unique design and some of the funniest dialog ever, but still meh.
