No GTA IV effect on Iron Man opening
Talk of Grand Theft Auto IV possibly hurting Iron Man's opening was clearly wrong. According to Variety, the movie made $104.2 million during its opening weekend, proving Paramount's Rob Moore right when he said that young males can carve out two hours to see Iron Man.
Variety did explore GTA IV's impact on the home video market recently, which showed no major releases targeted at the young male demo for the week. Probably the best comparison would be to see how the Iron Man video game did in sales when NPD comes out next month, and we know we're going out on a limb on this one, but we're pretty sure GTA IV won that battle.

I do not know about everyone else but I made sure to go see it after reading those predictions. When it was over, I went home and took my virtual girlfriend Michelle for some bowling... something fishy about her though...
how sad...
Eric @ May 5th 2008 1:43PM
Just keep dating my friend you have no idea.
MarkHawk @ May 5th 2008 1:56PM
I'm sure me and Michelle will take it the next level soon. If not there is this flirty red head named Kate. For now we are just friends. Hopefully I don't date anyone else with K in their. Don't want things to get confusing ...
;p
Haon @ May 5th 2008 1:57PM
I had my suspicions too. Tried to look her up in the police computer. Nothing...
MarkHawk @ May 5th 2008 1:58PM
Great Idea though

Haha, I just ended up ignoring her calls. I could smell 5 kinds of crazy wafting off her the first time I picked her up. I figure that I'd made that mistake enough times in real life that I was going to keep it out of my virtual one...
voodoo_craig @ May 5th 2008 3:44PM
Yeah, could tell from the start Michelle was a bit of a nutbar, kept dating her though, she's a proper goer!
xFenixKnightx @ May 5th 2008 1:34PM
Hahahaha I saw the numbers on Yahoomovies and I lol'ed. Ima take my kiddos to see it this weekend coming up, they love the Iron man demo, me...not so much.
Mr.ESC @ May 5th 2008 2:26PM
The move was awesome but the game could've been better. I played the demo and the controls especially in flight felt wrong and the sensibility was too high. Sega should release a patch with a Lock-On option.
xFenixKnightx @ May 5th 2008 2:40PM
I agree, the controls is what kills it for me. The graphics look great though.
Fernando Rocker @ May 5th 2008 1:38PM
Robert Downey Jr. = Amazing as Tony Stark
I saw the movie in the theather since last wednesday, two days before the world premiere. It's a very good movie.
It's the best comic adaptation since Spider Man (not counting Spider Man 3).
The only detail I didn't like was that they didn't show the Tony Stark alcholism problem. But they will in Iron Man 2.
PS. Stay until the end of the credits.
=p
MarkHawk @ May 5th 2008 1:43PM
I not a huge comic book fan but I felt the same way as you. I even compared it to Spiderman 1. It gets you very hyped for a possible sequel. Overall you didn't need to know anything about Iron man before sitting down to see it and it's not bad for kids. Except Starks love for pretty woman in the begining.
Only thing I didn't like was after the credits. Not knowing anything about comics I laughed when that actor appeared as that character. IDK why I just thought it wasn't a good idea. But hope I am very wrong as everyone seems very excited about it.
kbomb1upc @ May 5th 2008 1:45PM
I think this is the first time I've ever argeed with Fernanado... At first I wasn't to keen on Robert playing Iron Man but after seeing it I can't think of better choice. I also believe this was on par with the first two Spidermans and Batman Begins...I might go see it again next weekend...
P.S. If you haven't seen the movie you have to stay to the end...trust me...
Fernando Rocker @ May 5th 2008 1:45PM
I agree with you... I didn't like that last actor at the end of the credits as that character.
Zertoss @ May 5th 2008 1:48PM
Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely fantastic as Tony Stark. It's clear he enjoyed playing the role.
I also lol'ed pretty hard at Stan Lee's role.
The ending after the credits sets the stage nicely for next year's Avengers movie (at least, I think it's supposed to be next year).
So yeah, excellent movie, worth dragging yourself away from GTAIV or Mario Kart or Brawl or whatever.
Fernando Rocker @ May 5th 2008 1:52PM
That's Marvel plan... they are also going to set The Incredible Hulk film in the same universe as Iron Man and The Avengers, so expect some crossovers of Tony Stark in the new Hulk movie.
343 Guilty Fart @ May 5th 2008 1:55PM
LOL you people pay for movies
MarkHawk @ May 5th 2008 1:57PM
If I do Im just scamming my industry ... VFX that is.
E.J. @ May 5th 2008 2:07PM
Robert Downey Jr. has already filmed his Tony Stark cameo in the new Incredible Hulk movie.
Edward Norton = guaranteed good movie.
deaftly @ May 5th 2008 2:28PM
Whats with movies fucking up with the 3rd sequel? Spiderman 3 was so bad I really couldn't finish watching it and I almost walked out of X-Men 3. YOU DONT KILL CYCLOPS AND XAVIER IN AN XMEN MOVIE!!
Mr.ESC @ May 5th 2008 2:30PM
You know while Spiderman and the Xmen have stories that are so easy to screw up Iron-man other than the Armor wars and Civil war I don't remember nothing memorable about him so any change is an improve.
You should also count the Fantastic Four, both FF movies were great.
I can't wait for both the Avengers and the Nick Fury movies.Hulk wasn't bad either.
Fernando Rocker @ May 5th 2008 2:33PM
Mr. Esc
I think I'm one of the few people who also liked and enjoyed the Hulk film with Eric Bana.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ May 5th 2008 2:46PM
"The only detail I didn't like was that they didn't show the Tony Stark alcholism problem. But they will in Iron Man 2."
Of course not. Stark isn't an alcoholic when he first becomes Iron Man.
"Only thing I didn't like was after the credits. Not knowing anything about comics I laughed when that actor appeared as that character. IDK why I just thought it wasn't a good idea. But hope I am very wrong as everyone seems very excited about it."
It is. If you don't know, Marvel movies has a tendency to take stuff from the Ultimate marvel series(It's like a more extreme and more emo version of the regular Marvel series) In this case it's Nick Fury. Nick Fury in the ultimate universe is black and modeled after Samuel L. Jackson. So it only makes sense to add him in to the movie universe.
"LOL you people pay for movies"
Lol and you're a dumb prick who watches shitty cam quality movies.
"You should also count the Fantastic Four, both FF movies were great."
No..Just no. God both movies were horrible.
"Whats with movies fucking up with the 3rd sequel? Spiderman 3 was so bad I really couldn't finish watching it and I almost walked out of X-Men 3. YOU DONT KILL CYCLOPS AND XAVIER IN AN XMEN MOVIE!!"
Well for Sp3's case it was: Let's take a decent story with the sandman and then slap Venom on there cause we know people would see the movie in droves. And it worked. Also if you waited at the end, you'd see that xavier wasn't dead. Also Cyclops is a fucking pussy, he deserved to die.
"I think I'm one of the few people who also liked and enjoyed the Hulk film with Eric Bana."
I did too. Sure it wasn't the best marvel movie, but it definitely wasn't as bad as most people make it out to be. I liked that it wasn't HULK SMASH for 90 min and actually had a decent plot.
xFenixKnightx @ May 5th 2008 2:48PM
I liked the Hulk movie too, it was a little too long and drawn out but still good IMO. Same with Spidey 3 I liked it but definatly not as good as 1 and 2. Xmen3 on the other hand blows! I also agree Edward Norton already = WIN for the next Hulk.
deaftly @ May 5th 2008 3:20PM
@Vegeta
Oh cool I never knew that! Also, yes cyclops sucks.
rv @ May 5th 2008 4:07PM
I have had it with these muthafuckin ironmen in this muthafucking movie!
Obie @ May 5th 2008 4:49PM
Agreed, that flick was a lot of fun. Lets hope they keep it going...and not go all emo like Spidey 3.
Rocketboy @ May 6th 2008 3:24PM
""You should also count the Fantastic Four, both FF movies were great."
No..Just no. God both movies were horrible."
The first one, as in the one that was made but never released was so awful it was good. Wait, better than good, it was great. It was as if Ed Wood himself came back from the dead to direct it. And that my friend, is fine Columbian uncut win.
Dravean @ May 5th 2008 1:41PM
RAD MOVIE! Was glad I managed to pry myself away from liberty city long enough to see it!
Eric @ May 5th 2008 1:43PM
Movie was so fantastic!
Solidwarrior @ May 5th 2008 1:47PM
i went to see it yesterday... was good film!
iMax @ May 5th 2008 1:47PM
Uh... wow. The movie was definitely a let down for me. I was expecting so much more.
It was ALL set-up. It was a teeny bit of Iron Man story, and then dumb shit that didn't make any difference whatsoever to the plot. The extremely small bit of action was awesome, and the jokes they did were hilarious, but I expected quite a bit more from it.
Hopefully the sequel will be better. =/
Mr.ESC @ May 5th 2008 2:35PM
What can you expect from Iron Man? I'm serious what can you expect from Iron man? I remember the 90's animated series and they were good but the villians other than Mandarin were lame.
Yeah there was a little action but it was an awesome movie.
Matt B @ May 5th 2008 1:52PM
I couldn't carve out enough time. I'll wait for the blu ray.
D_Average @ May 5th 2008 2:11PM
I couldn't either, too busy trying to beat 150cc on Mario Kart.
Shadow Hog @ May 5th 2008 1:59PM
"Variety did explore GTA IV's impact on the home video market recently, which showed no major releases targeted at the young male demo for the week."
I don't there are EVER any major releases target at your average young black Scottish cyclops.
Zootittles @ May 5th 2008 2:25PM
My local video store has a "Demoman" section. (nyah nyah)
Mr.ESC @ May 5th 2008 2:39PM
Well about time someone gave a damn about the young Demomen demographic(Not pun intended).lately everything is about scouts and those damn spies.

I guess this is as good a place as any to say that I definitely saw the movie and it was awesome.
I loves me some Iron Man, and the movie didn't disappoint. I think I'll even play the game now :P
NukeAssault @ May 5th 2008 3:22PM
The game isint as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I quite enjoy it myself.=)
valdemiro @ May 5th 2008 2:01PM
I was deep in the throes of GTAIV and I had to take a break. So I grabbed one of my friends and we saw it. I dare say it was the best Superhero movies I've ever seen.
Irresponsible Robot @ May 5th 2008 5:00PM
Yes, as a matter of fact, they did.
Irresponsible Robot @ May 5th 2008 5:03PM
Whoops! That comment should have gone to Rocketboy in the comment below.
Rocketboy @ May 5th 2008 2:01PM
Is this article from the department of let's make stuff up? Do they have some sort of control universe where GTA wasn't released in the same week as Iron Man?
hadrian @ May 5th 2008 2:16PM
that will be due to the movie actually being decent . funny that , hollywood makes a good movie and it gets a good response , maybe they should take notes .
Mr.ESC @ May 5th 2008 2:23PM
This only proves what we all know, people don't watch bad movies.
Iron man was awesome (Be sure to watch the final scene after the credits.Pure Win) probably is going to be one of the few movies I'll buy in DVD or Blu-ray.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ May 5th 2008 2:49PM
Really? Then please explain to me why Meet the Spartans was #1 at the box office?
Rocketboy @ May 5th 2008 3:00PM
Explain, well, almost every movie that's been released within the past 10-20 years...
mksolo @ May 5th 2008 2:34PM
lol, i was too busy playing GTA IV and Age of Conan to go see Iron Man, ill probably go see it soon though or just wait for the blu ray version of it.
