Do you know what we really, truly and utterly despise about Pokémon games? It's the fact that every time something Pokémon related pops out of Nintendo's red-and-white capsule, we have to go hunting for that "é." You know, the one with the thingy on top. That's a period of 45 minutes we could spend being super effective and writing about this week's Virtual Console releases.
Pokémon Puzzle League (N64, 1-2 players, 1000 Wii Points): Pit those encapsulated creatures against one another in a battle of manic block rearrangement! Way to go!
Renegade (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Clean up your city by punching and jump-kicking every thug, gangster, villain, lowlife, miscreant and suspicious loiterer you can find. So, pretty much everyone in the game then.
Puzzle League was a really great game but it only has 1-2 player. The Panel de Pon they released on the Japan only Nintendo Puzzle Collection had 4 player and was waaaay better.
I agree! The gc version come with 4 players....i mean who can say no to 4 player mode of dr mario and panel de pon?! too bad they cancel the NA released....T_T i have to import the game plus the get the freeloader just for this game...which is worth it!
u can also transfer yoshi, drmario or panel de pon on the gba!! with the gba link
anyway u cant go wrong with any version....except the ds version is more beginner friendly
like i say before, the n64 have a 3-d cylindric mode which is cool
So true!!....now i can rest my n64....and HOPE FOR GOD they got more SNES pad attachment for the wii in NA!! (yeah need to import once it is available) that pad is perfect for this game! (well i got my hori snes pad for the gc...althought the button is bigger, it play well)
How 'bout instead of releasing PPL, work on Panel de Pon WiiWare? It'd be much better than hearing Ash and Mewtwo shouting I'M GOING TO WIN at each other repeatedly as an "epic showdown".
The only game that actually features ASH (Way to go Brawl) and he repeats the same crap over and over, well at least the pokemon themes are sort of decent.
Of course they put up the most expensive version of Panel de Pon possible. Why charge people $8 for Tetris Attack when you can charge them $10 for Pokemon Puzzle League?
Still, I'd be tempted to buy this if I didn't already own Tetris Attack and Planet Puzzle League.
there is some difference in the point system and combo on the 3 versions....but it come to a matter of personnal preference, i will get all 3 versions
still a good purchase, i find that there is no definitive version yet cuz each one introduce some element to the series, like in the gb/gba and latter version, u can keep scrolling to extend ur chain and go beyond the x100...., etc
Yet I'm not sure if I want Pokemon Puzzle League because I can't stand the anime. My favourite game route in Pokemon is route 113 because it's always raining little bits of Ash.
Plus this is the only version to contain the 3-D cylindric mode, it is different and fun.
This is also the 1st version to allowed the chains to go higher than x13 to rack up more point but the point system differ from the snes version
Also if u love Planet Puzzlea League and want more challenge (ie the real Normal and Hard version), get this version! also since there is no stylus here...you will need to brush up your d-pad controller skill!
i am a decent player(x13 chains is the norms)...i didnt like the garbage battle mode in Wiifi on Puzzle league...it way too long since the block fall down slowly and take forever lol, it is more like a marathon matches!
i prefer the high score version!
the hard mode of the DS is like the equivalent of the easy mode of the snes/n64/gc/gba version and the game is user friendly for beginner and also the stylus make the game more easier to get into(which is a plus for beginner and veteran of the series)
Seriously. Lame. Tetris Attack is so much better. The music for that game alone makes it worth it, not to mention it would be cheaper (yeah, that argument goes the other way when you're Nintendo) and smaller, as mentioned above. I refuse to buy PPL because if Tetris Attack comes out, that will just have been wasted money.

Just hold down ALT and type 1 3 0 on your numeric keypad to get the nifty 'é' character.

I've had this key combo memorized since 1999. Not all of them, just this one. It proved useful given my obsession with Pokémon at the time.

Nice, Pokémon Puzzle League is one of the few reasons that my N64 is still permanently affixed to my television. As far as puzzle games go, that one's a dandy.

mewtwo and ash is way more epic than faeries boy
LuckyD @ May 5th 2008 1:30PM
Personnaly i prefer the Yoshi theme on the snes!! :D
Bring that one!
I prefer the pokémon theme to the fairy one too...
well the generic one of the gba is soso...but the music theme in the DS is kinda funky...but we cant have too much of yoshi here!
Spiritsnare @ May 5th 2008 2:22PM
snarfoogle: Well-said. I'd still take Yoshi and/or the "fake Lumines" look over I'M GOING TO WIN anyway.
Jody Anthony (cookingrebels.com) @ May 5th 2008 11:38AM
screw the pokeymans, i am going to plop down my 500 points for some Renegade action. That was my beat-em-up of choice back in my NES days.
Oh, the memories

Crap. I need to pick up some more Wii points for Wii Ware.

Also this version is bigger in size (264 blocks) but got the extra 3-d cylindric mode and the pokémon theme for fans of the series...u can rack more point after a x13 chains and go on from there
there is some difference in the point system and combo on the 3 versions....but it come to a matter of personnal preference, i will get all 3 versions

The biggest difference between that Pokémon Puzzle League YouTube video and IGN's footage from when the game was first released is that this doesn't suck nearly so bad. I guess IGN is absolutely terrible at PPL.
Donald @ May 5th 2008 12:25PM
I like Pokemon games.
I like Panel de Pon (own Planet Puzzle League).
Yet I'm not sure if I want Pokemon Puzzle League because I can't stand the anime. My favourite game route in Pokemon is route 113 because it's always raining little bits of Ash.
LuckyD @ May 5th 2008 1:13PM
This is a must buy, this version is harder than the DS version(the snes version remains the hardest in my opinion because it is harder to rack in more chains...the max is x13, any more and you dont get the point so u must restart the chain everytime....and that gave birth to some crazy combo...speed up chain and lotta explosion and crazy technique ie the last minute double crossed come to mind, etc) and the Pokémon theme wont deter to the gaming at all
Plus this is the only version to contain the 3-D cylindric mode, it is different and fun.
This is also the 1st version to allowed the chains to go higher than x13 to rack up more point but the point system differ from the snes version

Go for it!

Easier still (since I've spotted a few macs in your pics, Joystiq), alt+e will make é.
Rather than typing in some friend code of a number to simply add a diacritic.
LuckyD @ May 5th 2008 1:07PM
I am big fans of the panel de pon/tetris attack/puzzle league series, my all time fav puzzle game, i already own Tetris Attack(mint condition), Pokémon Puzzle League, Tetris Attack GBC, Nintendo Puzzle Collection(gc jap), Panel de Pon (gba jap version, need NA version too) and planet puzzle league...so chalk this one up to another download from the VC..the worse thing is i will probably end up buying Tetris Attack and Panel de Pon if they show up in VC later on....and if they ever do a remake on wiiware...another purchase!!!
i am a decent player(x13 chains is the norms)...i didnt like the garbage battle mode in Wiifi on Puzzle league...it way too long since the block fall down slowly and take forever lol, it is more like a marathon matches!
i prefer the high score version!
the hard mode of the DS is like the equivalent of the easy mode of the snes/n64/gc/gba version and the game is user friendly for beginner and also the stylus make the game more easier to get into(which is a plus for beginner and veteran of the series)
what i like about the N64 version is the 3-d scroll cylindric mode....and yes the garbage mode take forever too in this mode lol! pretty neat and the Pokémon theme is not too bad
overall a must buy game for puzzle fans and if u are a veteran to the serie...u already own it by now :D

The only reason I prefer Tetris Attack is cause in Endless, you get the awesome "STOP" sound rather than that friggin annoying Jigglypuff song.

Still no word on pokemon Platinum edition, sigh.
