Valve distances themselves from PS3 development

Big Xbox 360 fanboy brownie points goes to developer Valve, not only for giving the 360 a superior version of the Orange Box, but because they openly diss the PS3. Now that's the kind of developer we love.

Chatting with CVG at a recent Left 4 Dead preview event, Valve's Doug Lombardi was blatantly honest about why they aren't planning a PS3 version of the game, saying that "we're not PS3 developers - we're doing PC and 360 like with Orange Box." Zing! Lombardi explained that "EA came to us and said 'wow, Orange box was an incredible project, can we do a PS3 version?'", so that's why a (craptacular) PS3 version was created without Valve's magic touch. Though, it's still possible we'll see Left 4 Dead on the PS3 if it becomes a huge hit on the 360 and PC, just don't expect Valve to be involved ... mwahahahaha!

hmmm.. considering i played Orange Box on xbox, and i thought the game still sucked.. i dont care much for valve anyway. But how is this a PS3 diss anyway.. they just say they develop for PC and 360; some developers prefer PS3. It makes sense considering PC's and 360 are Microsoft based/made; it would be easier for them just to make for those two because its similar.. this is garbage, much like valve!!! hopefully the new game is fun

It's normal for people to have different tastes but he's still wrong. I don't necessarily like Half-Life but I know that it's amazingly developed and one of the best games ever made. This dude is probably some gay Sony fanboy who's pissed cause he still doesn't have MGS4.

This post is pretty clear that Valve wasn't even responsible for the PS3 version of HL2. Another team handled it. So I'm not sure how the game proves that they're lazy.

I still have the Orange Box un-played on my 360 to do list. I just don't know where to start with it, too many games in one box.

I have to slightly agree that the reason maybe they don't want to bother learning the PS3, but as they said they are only 150 people, and they would prefer to make good games, than many poor games. The number of games that are ruined because Developers try to develop for too many consoles, too quickly is too long to count.

As long as Valve don't say that "The PS3 is crap and we wont touch it with a pole", I am fine with it, I own a 360 anyhoo.

So ... their "blatant honesty" about why they're not developing for the PS3 is because they don't understand its architecture and how to program for it ... ?

Dont they go on to say that it was EA that made the port and not them? So in turn Valve didnt make the crappy port nor will they make anything else for the ps3...

Developed by EA, but Valve still put their name on the shitty port and pushed the sale of it. It doesn't fare well for the reputation of Valve in many consumers' eyes.

Well at least they can admit it. I give them props for basically saying they don't want to take the effort and time to develop on a third platform because they have no experience. So many companies hide behind marketing statements trying not to offend anyone.

They should, however, be responsible for ensuring the quality of the port. I mean people who have a bad experience with their game are not going to blame the developers who port the game but the designers of the game whose name is emblazoned on the cover. That affects future sales and the reputation of your company.

I bought it for the 360 and when I saw it on my friend’s PS3, I was appalled. Games (or any software) should not ship with bugs that glaring. EA probably needed the game out for a certain quarter’s revenue numbers and decided to ship anyway. Pathetic…
