Doom 4 announced, id Software hiring

No other details were given, but we're guessing it'll run off of id Tech 5 (or perhaps something greater). Given the ending of the Doom 3 expansion Resurrection was pretty conclusive, we don't know where the team will take the Doom story next. Our guess? Probably send a space marine to Hell to fight demons. Perhaps this time he (or she) will pack a better flashlight.
Id Software is a prolific partner of Activision, who published Doom 3, Quake 4 and Quake Wars. Check out Activision's Family Album to learn more about the company's internal studios.

That will be awesome! Next-Gen version of Hell =P
DLow28 @ May 7th 2008 1:33PM
From what I remember, Doom 3 was pretty intense. That flashlight use freaked me out lol
syrik zero @ May 7th 2008 1:35PM
I agree, scared the shit out of me a few times. Still nothing has even come close to how much fear Silent Hill 2 did. That game was so intense!
rv @ May 7th 2008 1:58PM
BUT WILL IT PLAY DOOM???
syrik zero @ May 7th 2008 2:08PM
Huh? Play Doom? I'm sorry man, I don't understand...
Jhongerkong @ May 7th 2008 2:23PM
$5 says rv reads Engadget
Mo @ May 7th 2008 2:51PM
rv is trying to divide by zero!
syrik zero @ May 7th 2008 2:58PM
Hahaha well I'm glad I'm not the only confused on
rokkaman @ May 7th 2008 3:00PM
the irony is, they actually got Doom running on a computer screen inside Doom 3...
Zeus.:God @ May 7th 2008 4:01PM
But will it run Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3?!
Mr.ESC @ May 7th 2008 4:36PM
No RV you are the Demons!
Hell's yeah Doom 4!! :D
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:04PM
Fuck yeah!
I really like Doom.
Abscissa @ May 7th 2008 2:54PM
I like the *real* Doom. Unfortunately, Doom 64 was FAR more of a Doom game than the so-called "Doom 3" was.
HighFiveJesus @ May 7th 2008 7:11PM
i'm inclined to agree. i wanna see stage numbers, percentage kills, huge swarms of monsters, and to actually be in hell for more than an hour.
Lekko @ May 9th 2008 12:52AM
Doom + Wii = Hell
MariosInferno @ May 7th 2008 1:05PM
Hell on Earth????
FTW????????
I think so!!!!
Rollins @ May 7th 2008 1:31PM
That was my first thought. :)
MariosInferno @ May 7th 2008 1:37PM
Well, you know, I distincly remember them showing off Tech5 in some kind of outdoor setting. It was pretty damn good looking. Beautiful things could be done with Hell on Earth.
MariosInferno @ May 8th 2008 8:37AM
"Hell on earth was the subtitle for Doom 2. Grow some pubes."
And Doom 3 was essentially a remake of the original Doom. Eat a d**k.

Marty @ May 7th 2008 1:06PM
Here's to hoping it's a little less repetitive and a little more intellectual than the last game.
noskillbassist @ May 7th 2008 2:15PM
FPS being less repetitive? So you want Doom 4 to be a 3 hour game?
TheHuntIsOn @ May 7th 2008 1:07PM
Jolly nice move, id. Jolly nice.
Wasn't massively keen on Doom 3 at first but it's really grown on me. Great series they have there!
Mooseman721 @ May 7th 2008 1:10PM
Yawn, generic shooter 4. More locker monsters.
baby sea tuna @ May 7th 2008 1:42PM
I feel ya. As a longtime fan of the first two PC games, 3 was a tremendous disappointment.
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:42PM
The Haze thread is like 3 topics back.
Bucket @ May 7th 2008 1:45PM
All your FPS cliches...? Yeah, id software invented all of them. Pay respect, jerkoff.
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:10PM
John Carmack rules!
=p
jsn @ May 7th 2008 1:31PM
Bow to The Carmack.
considering they are starting out with an engine that already runs well on the major platforms, I will have high hopes.
Noshino @ May 7th 2008 2:31PM
I still don't get why people think that Newell is the one to go to when they want a technical opinion...
Carmack is in a WHOLE other level than Newell, he does know what he says, he doesn't even whine....his comments tend to stay neutral most of the times
Abscissa @ May 7th 2008 2:54PM
Yea, Carmack rules. But unfortunately, all of id's remaining level designers are total hacks.
taha.rana @ May 7th 2008 1:12PM
OMG OMG OMG !!
Residentevil72501 @ May 7th 2008 1:12PM
More Doom Please yayaya! :) I love Doom 4 life, Im excited!
Obie @ May 7th 2008 1:13PM
Meh, monster closets FTL.
bakes @ May 7th 2008 1:13PM
According to the DOOM movie this game has nothing to do with HELL and more to do with DNA FROM SPACE.
pay attention....will ya?
FOXHOUND @ May 7th 2008 1:21PM
I need to find a mod that allows me to use the characters from that movie... and possibly a car bumper(at least, that's what it looks like Sarge/The Rock's character was holding in that scene).
"I'm not supposed to die!" -total sadface-
Nein @ May 7th 2008 1:13PM
I hope they learned their lesson from Doom 3. Game needs to be much faster with way more enemies around, swarming you. Bigger levels, less linear, no stupid codes to enter in doors and cabinets...
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:17PM
And please, include a remake of E4M2 from the original Doom.
It was very fun to beat that level on Ultra Violence mode.
=p
DangerMouse @ May 7th 2008 2:26PM
^Best episode for co-op. It was tough as hell. I played it back in 95 or so at a friends house with a null-modem cable. Good times.
xFenixKnightx @ May 7th 2008 1:14PM
So I guess this will be running on id's Tech5 Engine right? Cant wait to see it! Never played any of the Dooms.
NATO_Duke @ May 7th 2008 1:21PM
WHAT!!!????? Never? Oh man, how did you get into gaming without hitting doom? Here's Doom 1.9- http://www.download.com/Doom/3000-7453_4-10000739.html?cdlPid=855496
Give it a go.
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:24PM
Or download the Live Arcade version. Only $5 dlls. with achievements and online.
xFenixKnightx @ May 7th 2008 1:33PM
Lol, yeah never. I almost bought Doom 3 on Xbox but never did :( Looks like it got good reviews too.
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/601/601298p1.html
Yea Ive seen you playing Doom on XBLA Fernando but just never gotten around to it. So...achievements you say? :P
Fernando Rocker @ May 7th 2008 1:35PM
Yeah, pretty challenging achievements. Basically, finish the game on Ultra Violence mode.
Episode 4 is a bitch.
Vcize @ May 7th 2008 2:57PM
Even though I do appreciate achievements from time to time, I would say just download the doomsday version of Doom online.
Comparitively, the XBLA version was very half-assed compared to it. The doomsday version will run in widescreen and updated the controls to modern settings (mainly you can look up and down), while the XBLA version is just like the original where you can't aim your gun up or down at all, just side to side. So to shoot an enemy up on a ledge you just aim at the wall in front of you and the bullet kind of magically appears up there.
Huey2k2 @ May 7th 2008 1:15PM
Sweet, I don't care what anyone says, I loved Doom 3.
gusem @ Jun 6th 2008 8:20PM
doom 3 had more of a storyline than the other dooms, and none of them took place in the streets of a big city. neither did you ever have an aly by your side that backs you up, all some good thing to look forward to in DOOM 4!!!! HELL YEAH, Literaly
Negativecool @ May 7th 2008 1:15PM
I know Doom 3 got mixed reviews from critics and players alike.
But for me Doom 3 marked the beginning of a new graphical era, full of lighting, textures, and models more detailed than ever before. 2004 was the year to be a PC gamer! Even as I play it now, I'm still in awe of the graphics.
On top of all of that, Doom 3 is by far the scariest game I've ever played.
An experience you can't understand without some high fidelity headphones wrapped around your ears, a PC that can run it full tilt, and it HAS to be at least midnight before you start. It will make you cry in 2 hours.
With no mods, it is the scariest thing I've ever played and I can't wait for the 4th installment!
MariosInferno @ May 7th 2008 1:25PM
Clearly you've never played Silent Hill 2.
MarkHawk @ May 7th 2008 1:36PM
You forgot Live Coop as a well.
