Wasn't MS the one who got sued in monopoly by buyin their competitors ?

It also lead to the court's in having mr. Gate step down from CEO.

The Simpsons even made fun of MS's competitive nature in buyin out small companies.

Microsoft was known a decade ago to be this giant company that smashes on the smaller ones. Guess ppl forgot the crap that happens in the mid 90s'.

Nobody forgot MS and their tactics against smaller business and such. Yet people also remember that Sony has done much of the same. Who the heck ever said MS was an angel?

The 10 year lifecycle is crud, though. All the good RPGs are still coming out for the PS2 right now, when Sony should have killed it and made them go to PS3.

The "next generation" of games is playing PS2 games upscaled through a PS3. It really stinks.

They need to kill the PS2 outright like Microsoft did the XBox. And when the PS4 comes out, immediately kill the PS3.

In a few years the next generation will be coming out whether Sony wants to play ball or not.

The PS2 also had a rough start like the PS3 and so people were playing PS1 games on their PS2 for around the first year at least.

All of the above applies.

And i think you still have to consider, with both microsoft and sony, that there are intirely different divisions withing a company.

Saying sony are dispicable for their rootkit fiasco, and having this as a reason not to buy a PS3 is dimwitted in my opinion. Find another reason not to buy it, but this smells of shit

I agree there is something seriously wrong with people not considering the Wii as competition. Thats ridiculous in my opinion. Its PR spin at its finest. News flash to Xbox and Playstation fans. The Wii is a game console and it came out this gen. Just because it doesn't have HD graphics doesn't suddenly mean it isn't in top place and Sony will never beat the Wii at this rate.

Besides. What do we consider on top? Most number of hardware sold or most games sold per platform? Or how about market share? Because if we go by market share Nintendo and Sony have always had more than Microsoft. This gen Microsoft has taken a lot away from Sony, while Nintendo seens to have done far better than anyone could have predicted after the gamecube. What ever way you look at it, theres room for 3 consoles and even if Sony do eventually sell more (which they will) Microsoft will be the real winners because they will have managed to eat at Sony's marketshare.

Wii isn't competition. If it were competition, it would be killing PS3 and 360, no lie.

But Nintendo has designed their console to be profitable when the unit is sold, they're basically admitting they won't sell as much software as 360 or PS3. 360 or PS3 will win the worldwide software sales war this generation (probably PS3).

So, N makes their money on the console and they are selling more consoles. They win.
MS and Sony make their money on the software and they will send up selling more software. They win too.

Two different wars, two different winners.

Dude... please. Every week the sells more software than both PS3 and 360 in Japan (see MediaCreate)

Every month the Wii sells more software than PS3 and 360 in USA(see NPD numbers).

Also, check ChartTrack in EU.

@Fernando

For the most part the software that moves is bullshit and kiddy games ...

For a console with a 2 to 1 sales advantage over the next closest the attach rate SUCKS ...

The Wii is not in direct competition with the PS3 & 360 ... For better or worse it is on a completely different planet than the other two consoles ...

I hate to break it to you but you are the vocal minority of Wii players ... I would love to see some data on the gender and different age groups of Wii owners ... I bet you over 75% of ownership is children under 18 ...

Its a different console for a different market ... Doesn't make it bad or good but its an affordable console anyone can play ... No more and no less ... Nothing special about the Wii in any way other than maybe the poorly implemented Wii mote & first party titles ...

P.S.

Try Boom Blox out ... Its actually a fun little game ... Its like Pixel Junk Monsters in terms of how easy it is to play but it also has some depth ... Thats the Wii in a microcosim ... Easy to play, OK to look at, fun with people but nothing revolutionary

Oy, shut the hell up already fernando. You are tiresome.

You are not changing the world, nor are you changing anyones mind when you ramble on these meaningless tirades in defense of something that you seem to have an unhealthy emotional investment in.

You are don quixote, tilting at the windmills in a triumphant battle that only has significance in your own mind.

Fernando. You're counting only the top games. Wii looks great on this because that's all it has. It has great top games and little below.

As Wii sales slow (because of saturation, i.e. everyone already has one), non-first party Wii software sales will slow further also.

They sold a lot of Wiis to grandmas and made a profit doing it. But those grandmas aren't going to buy Super Smash Bros or Mario Kart.

The Wii certainly does count.. and it certainly will fall into last place. Perhaps not with consoles sold but in terms of software sales. The Wii is being sold as an over-priced plug and play for old folks and casuals to get their Wii sports on.

It won't take long before Wii software stops being of much interest to anyone other than the parents who've stuck their kids with the console for the entire life cycle.

The 360 beats the ps3 in the USA. The ps3 is selling more than the 360 in EU... Hmmm....

360 RUNS the USA and the ps3 gets no burn in the states... its a secondary system IF that to the 360 and Wii.

He's right. It already won in Japan and now in Europe too. PS3 won in 2 of 3 major markets. That's a win by any measure. It's not as strong a win as last time though, so MS has made advances.

PS3 has one the "true" next-gen war. No, PS3 probably won't beat Wii (I can't see how it would), but Wii isn't really next gen.

LOL... Lemmie set this straight... The ps3 can sell more systems, but uh, you have to put into account that ITS A BLU RAY PLAYER. In fact, aint it the cheapest???

Pioneer br player:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/07/pioneer-introduces-elite-bdp-05fd-bdp-51fd-blu-ray-players/

Panasonic br player:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/06/panasonics-dmp-bd50-gets-us-release/

AND look at the first post on that one:

"sweet, i think i'll get a ps3 instead..."

Here's the second post:

A $300 premium over the PS3 for nothing more than slower disc load time, IR support and better looking case... me thinks the PS3 is still the way to go for BD right now.

$700 is a dust collecting price. Make it $450 and you only START to interest the HT enthusiast.

WE ALL KNOW EU is buying the ps3 MOSTLY for blu-ray. Thats why the ps3 will never win... here in the USA we buy a console to PLAY GAMES, not PLAY MOVIES. I'm delighted that M$ didn't add HD-DVD to the 360.. It came out cheaper, easier to program for and has better exclusives.

ps3: play movies WHILE YOU WAIT FOR GAMES.

360: PLAY RIGHT NOW WITH THE BEST ONLINE CAPABILITIES ON A CONSOLE, even if it cost pennies a day!

Face it... ps3 may have EU and movies, but it wont beat the 360 in the USofA EVER.

You people do understand he works for sony right. I mean why is this being debated. There is nothing absolutely nothing to fight over, it is his job to be loyal and say this, hell he gets paid Thousands to do so. You pay me six figure a year salary and I will tell you PS3 will cure cancer, kill chuck norris with its dick and Shit hot super models out every time you kiss it. And I will do it with a straight freaking face, infront of my mom, God and the dug up corpse of Abraham Lincoln while moving his jaw, to corroborate my story.

And why would I sell my integrity, because a six figure salary is a hell of a good pay check. Not that the PS3 isn't a good system, but why are people debating who will be first second or third none of you are being paid, you are doing his job for free, that makes no damn sense to me.

Fernando,

I have never counted the Wii as part of this generation. The day Iwata showed the Revolution for the 1st time I realized that Nintendo GAVE UP on competing technologicaly with Sony and decided to go in the ONLY direction they could without giving up the hardware business.

The "revolutionary" Wiimote has in my opinion been POORLY implemented so far. The biggest Wii releases are controlled with traditional methods. So that leaves GC level games controlled by GC controllers.

If Sony were to repackage the PStwo with a motion controller would that make it next-gen? No WAY, so why does Nintendo get a pass on the very SAME thing?

The Wii is a GameCube period, book it, cue up the fat lady, misshun akomplishd.

I do NOT care if you agree with me or not. After seeing the KZ2 videos on this site http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/video/killzone-2.html#view:242742

I know that this is what I consider a new generation of gaming. Waving your arms around like a fool with GameCube graphics to me is NOT part of nor was it ever a part of this generation.

I agree with you 100%

The thing is your never going to get a zealot to look at things from that perspective ...

All you will hear is META CRTIC RATING and NPD SALES NUMBERS

The Wii is good for what it is ...

A affordable console that you can play with anyone ... Its not sophisticated technology ... And I agree with you on the Wii mote ... The only games it has worked flawless on that I have played has been Metroid & Galaxy ... It is pathetic for Brawl, Mario Kart (wheel SUCKS) & Okami

Its a fun system but nothing compared to the other two in any respect

The thing about this arguement is that it doesn't make any sense. I don't own a Wii, but I find this reoccuring attitude really puzzling...

The Wii was released in the same console generation (which is really just a time frame, after all) as the 360 and the PS3. It's true that they are going for different demographics, but that doesn't affect the fact that it's part of this generation of consoles.

They switched to new transmissions in 2007. It effected all trucks and most cars, including the Charger. I was told by a Dodger rep *lol carshows* that they were changing over for most cars, so take it with a grain of salt. Only problems I see are with 04-05 models, so don't buy those. Also, the state cops for WV are changing over to Chargers along with alot of city cops. It's fun to be driving along and have someone slow down because they think your driving an unmarked car. >:D

And yea, the Challangers are awesome. I got to drive one, fufufufufu... But let me tell you something, they are NOT worth the 45k. The Challanger is a nice muscle car, but there is too much of a diffrence between it and the Charger for me to justify 45k. Diffrent body style isn't worth that much.

Anyway, the powertrain has a lifetime warranty, so I'm not skurd of my trans going out.

Did you know that Nintendo harvested fireflowers for the japanese imperial army? Yes, dave, yes. They tied them to the wings of the japanese zeroes and used them for their deadly attack on pearl harbor.

Unfortunately, the tanker full of turtle shells MacArthur ordered sent to hawaii was still days away, too late to prevent the catastrophic destruction of most of the pacific fleet.

Disclosure: I am a 360 owner (no PS3) and enjoy the heck out of it. Having said that, I completely expect the PS3 to outsell the 360 eventually.

The point: the fact that MS closed the gap in sales (from Xbox/PS2) as much as they have is COMPLETELY AMAZING. Especially when you consider this is with no help from the East (Japan).

PS I will buy a PS3 one day (gotta play the ICO team game and GoW 3).

PSS To PS3 only players, BioShock is THAT good.

Being in competition with other companies, in an economic sense, has little to do with the games, the technology, or the desired target market for each machine.

What truly decides whether one console is in competition with the others is if the services it provides to the consumer are substitutable by other consoles or whether it is complimentary to other consoles.

Substitutability means that there is a certain size of the total video game market and that any dollar spent on one console translates to one dollar not-spent on another console.

I think that in the beginning many people were thinking that the Wii would be a compliment good to the 360 with consumers buying one console and then the other. Clearly this is not the case and the finite dollars going around to buy video game consoles are funneling into Nintendo.

Now, this is ignoring the growth in the video market. But once again, Nintendo seems to be dominating that as well and is not complimentary or a gateway to non-traditional console buyers purchasing other consoles.

To summarize, there is a finite amount of dollars swirling around to buy consoles and Nintendo has gobbled up most of them. This means that the Wii is in competition with the other consoles and is flattening them.
