Rumor: Samba de Amigo for Wii getting downloadables
Since revealing intentions to charge money for some measure of online content in February, Nintendo has kept its future plans for our wallets quietly under wraps. However, new box art found on GameStop's online store seems to indicate that Sega's upcoming maraca-deficient revival of office favorite Samba De Amigo may have us praying to the microtransaction gods when the game ships for the Wii this August. While nothing has been announced by either Sega or Nintendo, the new box art, uncovered by the sleuths at NeoGAF, carries the red "Pay to Play" program logo first shown at GDC by Nintendo to identify games that carry some sort of online fee. As our our friends at Wii Fanboy theorize, it seems likely that the game could finally introduce downloadable songs to Wii, which if true will just make the Wii versions of Guitar Hero III and Rock Band feel that much more feature bankrupt.

I hope you, and Joystiq, are right. I was under the impression this Pay to Play was a fee for a faster, more reliable, online service.

What do you mean a faster better online experience?? They arent replacing wi-fi connect with anothers serivces..the pay to play is clearly for DLC and expansion pack type of stuff, not for online play
Shogan @ May 7th 2008 5:48AM
I mean a less terrible online experience on the Wii. I thought I was clear as to what I guess the service was going to be. If it's DLC, that's fine too.

They have already made great improvments to the Wi-Fi service...Just compair Mario Striker to Mario Kart. If its thats not a clear improvment, I dont know what is.

Damn, that's some pixelated low-res cover shot.

Gives it an authentic Wii game look.

If this turns out to be an EA style pay-for-a-downloaded key-that-unlocks-content-already-on-the-disk I will not be happy!
But I can't understand how it will work otherwise, I already have very little memory left in my Wii and I don't want to have to re-download a song every time I play it.

*slaps head*
Really? REALLY?!? I'm the ONLY one who took their copy of Samba De Amigo on Dreamcast online? Basically you downloaded a game save which would unlock a song on the disc. NORMALLY these would be Sega themed songs, but they were on the disc. Kinda disappointing to see them charge for em now. Highly doubt this would be true DLC since the "on the disc" feature was on both Samba De Amigo and Samba De Amigo 2000.
nastysquar3d @ May 7th 2008 9:42AM
You, just like everyone has, have no idea what the "Pay to Play" is going to be. Maybe it will be some unlockable on the disc, maybe it will be true DLC. It's foolish to be "disappointed" before you actually know the truth behind it.
Bakk @ May 7th 2008 10:12AM
guys, its not unlockables on the disk...its DLC! There is nothing hidden about it, you will be able to pay some wii points to download/unlock a new song...whatever you want to call it, its for extra content and its not going to be on the disk, its going to come from the interwebs.

A quote from the Samba De Amigo manual.
"Be sure to go online from time to time and download all new bonus songs."
Now, do we KNOW that this is DLC or is it simply downloading an unlocking patch? The only thing known is the logo on the front. We can hardly draw conclusions one way or the other with so little being known.
motang @ May 7th 2008 2:30PM
And were exactly are we going to store these downloadables you talk about?
