When fans debate which of their plentiful wells Nintendo will be returning to for their next big title, Kid Icarus is always a popular suspicion. Now, IGN's Matt Casamassina has basically confirmed that it's on the way to Wii. On episode 7 of the IGN Nintendo Voice Chat podcast Casamassina says, "Of course [Nintendo is] going to have some E3 surprises. You know, Kid Icarus, for crying out loud, how many times do we have to say Kid Icarus? Kid Icarus is coming for crying out loud." When a co-host asks if he wants to reveal the developer he responds "I think we've confirmed it a billion times but no, I'm not going to say it officially."
Adding more fuel to the fire on this week's show Casamassina said "Kid Icarus, that's another one that I'm really anticipating just because I love the franchise and I'm sure that the developer will make a really pretty game." It looks like we'll have to wait for July to hear anything official from Nintendo but, if Casamassina is to be believed (we've asked him for further clarification), a Wii version of Kid Icarus seems to be all but a done deal.
[Thanks to Jeff for the heads up.]

What I don't understand is, if Cassamassina knows a Kid Icarus game is in the works, if he knows who's making it and if he has concrete evidence, why isn't he breaking the story? Why isn't he forcing a confirmation out of Nintendo or Factor 5 or whoever? He's a journalist, for God's sake, not part of the NOA PR departement. What's all this horsing around with vague declarations in podcasts?
I don't like Cassamassina and that's a big part why. It's like he's trying to bolster his own legend. I don't know what would be the best outcome; the rumour turns out to be false and he loses his credibility, or the rumour turns out be true and everybody wonders why the heck he played coy all this time.

So how many Kid Icarus games have been released? I mean this would be exciting news but I don't exactly have any past games to really help add to the hype. That NES game sucked. What else is there?

Factor 5.
If you've been listening to the podcasts he's been implying it for months.
Fuel to the fire: in the same podcast when someone asked if Factor 5 would be making a new Pilotwings he said no, but expect another flying game to be announced. Along with the "really pretty game" qoute, it's a sure bet.

...aaaaaaaaand you're just writing about this now? This rumor from IGN is at least 2 months old. Factor 5 + Wii = Kid Icarus. How much can we trust Cass + crew? Who knows. This may be another Halo DS-type news tidbit from them.

I'm not really excited about Kid Icarus. My memories of the original are only memories of frustration.
It only served to help me remember what game the Eggplant Wizard was from on Captain N.
Considering this is such an old game, and it really hasn't be revisited in any other form, I can't give an accurate opinion. I'll just have to wait until I see it. Of course, I always want good games, so I'd hope this one is good, too. It just doesn't sway me one way or another.
I'm not trying to bash anyone one way or another, but some people, as a whole, can't ever be satisfied.
If you make a sequel, and it's simply the same thing, only bigger and different locales, people will complain that it is the same shit, different day.
If you drastically change things, it leaves sequel territory and ends up on the spin-off floor, and people bash it because it goes against everything that defined the game to begin with.
You just can't win. I have had my Wii since launch day. I understand that if you strip Mario Galaxy of Star Bits and the Wii-mote tilting stages, you essentially have a Mario 64 sequel that can be played with a GC controller, I also can't deny that the game is still fun for me. It may be tired for you, but for many, it's a classic formula, and for others, it's new and refreshing.
I mean, if you want to be that narrow, you can even say that platformers are the same crap, different protagonist. If you've jumped with Mario, you've jumped with Jax/Gex/Bubsy/Dexter/Non-descript platformer 86.
Meanwhile, companies that have plenty of leftover IP (SEGA, wtf) decide ride a one trick pony out to pasture, only for it to be put down.
It's all a crapshoot, at this point.

if this game is made, i doubt itll sell very well. im sure some of the old fans will pick it up for nostalgias sake, but most of the new generation of gamers won't remember the original enough to care about playing a newer version. but hey, i could easily be wrong, just my 2 cents.

I've never played Kid Icarus, nor was I excited about Pit in SSBB. That being said this game is on my radar (if it's true) because it intrigues me and I have faith in Factor 5.
Screw nostalgia, if it's a good game I buy it.

Subjective alert! Nobody I knew liked this game back in the day, now I'm supposed to get excited? I think not. I'd rather have a new Star Tropics or Balloon Fight or Ice Climbers, well, just about anything other than Kid Icarus! That game had no charm at all.

I know! That always pissed me off and thought of Pit as a complete failure, I mean really he's an angel who can't fly, and he also can't shoot a bow and arrow more then 3 feet.

Well, Ness hasn't starred in an Earthbound game since 1995, nor has Marth starred in a Fire Emblem game since 1993...
But I guess Pit and the Ice Climbers are much older than that.

Bound to happen, its the Fire Emblem effect all over again. Put them in Smash Bros, and suddenly the series gains new prevalence world-wide. I agree that the basic gameplay mechanics of Kid Icarus are kinda boring, they seemed to try to fuse Metroid with Ice Climber and it didn't quite work, but they could really go in any direction with this
Now, if only the Fire Emblem effect could happen to Mother 3. I am beginning to think Shigesato Itoi himself is an elitist, since he's made allusions to the fact that Americans "wouldn't get" his game, and that's why they're not localizing.

Being metroid's sister series and all, i hope Retro develops it, they really need to make another game.

Factor 5 has been working on Wii for quite some time now. Factor 5 = PRETTY everything... god help them if they mess this up.
