Portal gets new Flash-inspired maps
So we're sure you all remember our love for Portal: The Flash Version in which We Create Stuff took all the fun of Portal and bludgeoned it with a digital hammer until it could fit into two dimensions. Now, like in some sort of Tom and Jerry cartoon, We Create Stuff's Hen Mazolski has inserted a bike pump into the flattened game's mouth and re-inflated it to 3D, with all of the Flash versions' levels intact.
This is no mere rehash of the Flash game, though that, in and of itself, would have been impressive. At around 3 1/2 hours, this is a complete experience, with GLaDOS' urgings and taunting remixed to provide an alternate take on the Enrichment Center experience. If you're a fan of Portal, you really shouldn't miss it.

(no offense to parapalegics)

And cue Valve suing........................now!

cue dark_inchworm's immediate doubt

You are aware that VALVe are one of the most supportive developers when it comes to modification, aren't you?
RogueJedi86 @ May 8th 2008 9:02AM
Still, what amounts to a free flash version of their game? Even Valve has to have their limits.
Ihavepants @ May 8th 2008 9:10AM
Exactly.. F.R.E.E. Free.
They didn't make any money of it, it is ok.
And with this you're basically saying that Valve will sue because someone modified their game to add levels, which is what people are meant to be doing?
I must be missing something in your logic because to me, you have none.
Rollins @ May 8th 2008 9:27AM
I highly doubt the flash version of Portal would stop anyone from buying the real game. They're both fun, but they're not the same by any means.
This, on the other hand, is pretty sweet for those who own Portal and need more. I wonder if it does actually require you to own HL2, though, like it says on the site.

It might actually encourage people to buy Orange Box to play the full portal experience.
Blazur @ May 8th 2008 10:17AM
RogueJedi86, you're pretty naive to suspect VALVe would sue over something like this. If anything, it encourages people to get the game if they haven't already and enjoyed the Flash version.

Valve supplies the tools and resources to make your own Portal levels. It's the SDK and it's been around for ages (that's how Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat came about). They wouldn't sue them, if anything Valve would probably hire them.
Roto13 @ May 8th 2008 10:54AM
If Valve was going to sue over Flash Portal, wouldn't they have done it by now? It's been out forever. They're certainly not going to sue over a map pack.
Haggard @ May 8th 2008 12:34PM
Logic bomb: YOU HAVE TO OWN PORTAL AND HALF LIFE 2 TO RUN THIS. This is not a free version of their game because you need to have already paid for the real one.
The flash version was a fun diversion but it wasn't the real thing, and was intriguing enough to basically serve as a free advert for the actual game.
Lekko @ May 10th 2008 2:15AM
Why would Valve sue someone for adding value to a game for free?
Tom90deg @ May 8th 2008 9:32AM
Well damn, that is probably one of the best fan-made maps that I've ever seen. It gives a real sense of a "Before" and the ending was very cool as well :-D Amazing work!
JJ Rooster @ May 8th 2008 10:12AM
Doesn't this require: Steam with Half-Life 2 and Portal installed in order to play ?
I don't have that, so I'm SOL?
warioswoods @ May 8th 2008 11:29AM
As far as the Half-Life 2 requirement, I believe that you can actually get by without it - just Portal should work fine. I understand that they used a couple assets from Half-Life 2, including a vehicle in one room, and that these are included in the map pack itself but, to be sure they are covered on the legal side, they ask that you own that game as well. It will install and play without it, however, and I honestly don't see why Valve would care that a vehicle or a couple items are being taken from their other game.
Roto13 @ May 8th 2008 10:55AM
It says that in the readme, but it's not true. All you have to do is copy the folders in the rar file into your Portal folder.
Ranus Studios @ May 8th 2008 11:08AM
Boy, I sure wish I didn't have a beast of a Mac that came out right before the Intels. That way, I would probably have a way to play this.
chispito @ May 8th 2008 12:53PM
Oh, Power PC, thy name is gameless.
Kevin Ghadyani @ May 8th 2008 11:23PM
Huh? Where's the download link?
capt_carl @ May 9th 2008 12:19AM
I would just like to add that this map is HARD.
