Call of Duty 5 in 'new military theater', returns series to PS2 and Wii
Although we still don't know definitively who's developing Call of Duty 5 (rumors suggest Treyarch), Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said the next game will be changing settings again. In a conference call yesterday (35:00 mark), he said, "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theater."
Also confirmed were plans to launch "on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal 2008" -- that's Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows and DS -- as well as PS2 and Wii. We're hoping the "new military setting" isn't related to World War II as the recent Treyarch job listing suggested.

Treyarch CANNOT make this game. Call of Duty 3 was almost enough for me to never buy any game that carried the same name. It actually got some good reviews although I have no idea why. It was just a jumbled mess. The addition of close-up fighting or whatever was a complete let-down and just a bad idea. Call of Duty 4 was the best game of 2007, in my opinion. It completely made up for COD3. If Treyarch gets the contract, I will not buy it.
Obie @ May 9th 2008 3:29PM
If it's not made by Infinity Ward they can shove it!
Co @ May 9th 2008 3:32PM
My GOD if COD 5 is set in WWII I will kill.
BananaBoat @ May 9th 2008 4:40PM
My money is on it either being set in the little known Alaskan theatre of WWII, or in the dirty dirty future wars of 2142.
Might aswell set it in 3264 China, because if Treyarch makes it, I ain't playing it anyway.
Purple Haze @ May 10th 2008 2:16AM
Not to mention that now that Call of Duty 4 hit such widespread popularity that it would seriously damage the franchise, and I doubt most people will know or care who made the game and do what you almost did.

I wish they'd just concentrate on supporting COD4 (new modes, maps, weapons, etc) until IW is ready to develop COD5. No one wants Treyarch at the helm.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 9th 2008 2:47PM
Well if it's on ps2 and wii AND made by treyarch it's definitely going to suck. Those 2 platforms are going to hold back the ps3 and 360 versions and..well shit it was going to suck from the start when treyarch was making it so why not go for broke now.
xFenixKnightx @ May 9th 2008 2:49PM
If its coming out on all those platforms it has to be Treyarch doing it. Just like COD3 came out on all. I just hope they use the COD4 engine and a major cheatsheet of Infinity Wards while making this games Single and MP. Why change it? No vehicles puhlease!
Jin @ May 9th 2008 3:28PM
ANGOLA!!!! OR NICARAGUA!!!
They can call it: COD 5: Sandinistas vs. Contras
Santo @ May 9th 2008 2:55PM
'Nam? Korea? World War I? The Civil War? The American Revolution? The Six-Day War? Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan?
Plenty of wars that haven't been touched a great deal in modern gaming.
Haggard @ May 9th 2008 3:11PM
It would be very interesting to see them take on a lesser-known war. I've never seen any game related to the Falklands, for instance - or FPSes about the american civil war (which in the UK I've only just started studying, having previously known nothing about it - I think it would make an ace game).
On the other hand, this is Treyarch, so they'll cock it up. I also assume that, like CoD3, it won't see a PC release and therefore I won't be able to get it anyway ^^
mian @ May 9th 2008 3:23PM
I think most Civil War/Revolutionary FPSs die when somebody on the dev team realizes that taking 1 minute inbetween shots to reload doesn't exactly keep the pace most gamers expect.
NATO_Duke @ May 9th 2008 4:34PM
Gotta agree with mian, the old wars just dont translate well in games with the slow weapon reloads and such. History channel showed that well.
I would like to see a Korean war game - though thats still a rough topic to jump into.
BrokenAbacus @ May 9th 2008 6:03PM
a Nam game has been made...anyone remeber Shellshock Nam 67' or whatever it was called?

No. You absolutely will not. And it will be laughable.

WW2 > modern combat shit, although a Vietnam title would be great as well.

Oooo, hadn't even thought about Vietnam. And now that I think about it, thats really the only direction they can go.
TJordan0331 @ May 9th 2008 3:08PM
I'm still waiting to hear a reason why no one like COD3. Any argument made is just "it sucked", but nobody can come up with anything logical. It took a "played out" era and spiced it up with classes and vehicles. With addition to a great multiplayer it had a good campaign that was challenging on veteran. Best of all the had rank per game. None of this persistent style that COD4 uses. After hitting the highest rank it left you with no other incentive. While ranks per game made you try your hardest every game to get the good stuff. Also nobody thought it was horrible when it came out, but only started voicing their opinions once COD4 hit the market.
But yeah, I hope they take the game to the pacific or better yet vietnam. I think the COD series (although sold out) could definitely make it interesting.
Jim Perry @ May 9th 2008 7:02PM
Well for one, it played like a shadow of COD2. Same controls, kind of the same graphics... but the flow/gameplay was uninspired compared to COD2. See we are comparing it to COD2... a sequel... COD2 then COD3. COD2 had poor, poor Multiplayer on LIVE, and was so useless it shouldn't have really even been in the game, but the single player rocked. COD3 should have learned from COD2s mistakes, but it didn't. COD4 on the other hand has made up for it completely. COD3 on LIVE was almost as terrible as COD2 in functionality etc.
Also the singleplayer not being bad, was no where near as good as COD2. And it shouldn't be glossed over. IW developed the engine and controls and set the bar, and the bar should have been surpassed, beyond COD2. But it didn't. On its own it wasn't a bad game. As a sequel to COD3, it was disappointing and not as good.
WiiFTW @ May 9th 2008 3:10PM
My guess is that they'll have a shit PS2/Wii version with shit controls for Wii like CoD3. Unless of course they actually put some effort into the controls. I'd like to see a Cold War themed thing where it is as if the Cold War gave way to actual war, like World in Conflict.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_in_conflict
That would intrigue me because it would be separate from CoD4's universe, but it would still have relatively modern weapons.
TheOverlord#2 can has Mario Karts?(MK:2578-3517-9859) @ May 9th 2008 6:32PM
Go see Medal of Honor Heroes 2, it has great controls.
Only bad thing about it is cause it looks like a 2nd year PS2 game.

It's going to be WWI.
Level 1: Sit in a trench having the crap shelled out of you.
Level 2: Play football with the Germans at Christmas 1914.
Level 3: Sit in a trench having the crap shelled out of you.
Level 4: Develop Trench Foot.
Level 5: Go insane in a military hospital.
Then one of the characters does a jaunty music-hall numbers over the end credits, describing the events of the game.

Call of Duty:5 Beyond Thunderdome! Confirmed
Yuri Wuensch @ May 9th 2008 3:48PM
COD 5: Stalingrad campaign. Germany versus Russia and you get to play on either side, they could lift from the Stalingrad movie and Enemy at the Gates. Would Americans buy a game without an American protagonist is the question ... but if they have to go back to WWII that would be a unique angle, and the environments would be cool. Just think of Germany retreating from Russia, freezing to death and running out of gas - cooool
Dick @ May 9th 2008 4:08PM
would anyone aside from you buy your horrible idea for a game setting, that's the question
Wonderflex @ May 9th 2008 3:46PM
I can't confirm this yet, but I'm fairly certain it's going to take place on the virtual set of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen: Sweet 16 - License to Drive. That might just be a rumor though.
Maximilian Lockwood @ May 9th 2008 3:53PM
Hate to break it to you guys, but this one IS taking place in the Pacific during WWII. My friend who also works part time at Best Buy is a play tester and has been partaking in the development of this game.
giantenemycrab @ May 9th 2008 4:01PM
The PS2 just won't die. It's the Hillary Clinton of consoles.
Joshua @ May 9th 2008 4:15PM
Obviously Pacific Theater.
Leobebes @ May 9th 2008 4:18PM
Developing for the Wii and the PS2 at the same time? That is like a teacher falling behind on the lesson plan in 4th grade because there is one autistic and one brain dead kid because they shouldn't be "left behind" while everyone suffers.
el serpiente @ May 9th 2008 4:32PM
Brings up some bad memories, eh?
Leobebes @ May 9th 2008 4:42PM
I never experienced a situation like that, but the Wii and PS2 do hinder the quality of cross platform games like the Call of Duty series. I remember seeing texture sin COD3 that reminded me of PS2 gamers, and I am pretty sure the reason being was because they developed the title with the PS2 in mind and just dolled it up for the 360 and the PS3.
That is in my opinion a travesty and a slap in the face to owners who purchased a 360 and a PS3 hoping to get titles that are exclusively developed with the next gen engines in mind.
If the Madden series, Call of Duty 3, all major sport franchises, and other cross platform games were all developed with only the 360 and PS3 in mind they would look 10 x better than they look now. Sad...as long as we see EA continue to develop Madden for the Wii and PS2 we will never see really new and improved Madden franchise.
Fatass of Haikuness @ May 9th 2008 4:44PM

That's better.
Leobebes @ May 9th 2008 4:55PM
@Fatass of Haikuness
I really don't know about. I have been playing Madden since the Sega Genesis games. When they jumped from Genesis to PS1 it was a huge transition. Their commitment to Sony showed by revamping their entire game, it was different every year from that point on too because their game dominated one generation of machine, this also applied when they moved on to the PS2 since they never managed to license their games with the Dreamcast, which led to the Dreamcast's demise. When Madden came out on XBOX you could tell more could be done on the Xbox's version of Madden, but since it had such a huge install base on PS2 they really couldn't shake things up a bit which led to the critical and user praised NFL2K5 which started development on the Xbox and was dumbed down for the PS2 rather than the other way around.
Now since the PS2 Madden base can't really be ignored by EA or shaken off, I truly believe we haven't seen the true next gen Madden, and that is pretty sad if you ask me.
Leobebes @ May 9th 2008 5:01PM
Just to avoid conclusion. I know the NFL2K series started development on the Dreamcast console, but what I meant to say in its later iterations it was built from the ground up with the XBOX architecture in mind and then later ported over to the PS2 rather than the other way around.
CJH @ May 9th 2008 7:24PM
I can guarantee you that COD5 for the PS2/Wii will have a different engine, and probably be a radically different game than the 360/PS3 versions. So any worries that they'll affect the graphical quality of the 360/PS3 versions are without merit.
markhill66 @ May 9th 2008 4:54PM
COD3 got a band rap, it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
I really hope it goes to Vietnam. There are so many things they can do with it that has never been done it could turn out to be incredible.
