Gran Turismo series ships more than 50 million globally
While it may seem seem like just yesterday that we first played Sony's love note to console gear heads in Gran Turismo, it was actually ten years ago ... a realization that made us feel incredibly old as Sony and developer Polyphony Digital announced that the sim, that first got its license in December 1997, has shipped more than 50 million units across the globe.
This figure, of course, includes the recently released Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which according to Sony has shipped out more than 2 million units. The company is playing coy, though, as to whether this number includes just physical products or digital downloads over PSN as well. We'd like to extend our hand and congratulate the series for making it this far, but unfortunately it didn't stop between the two yellow lines on the pavement so it's going to have to go back to the start and try again.

I am guessing that 2 million is both retail and DL, but that is still a pretty big number.

How would you ship DLC?
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 9th 2008 11:34AM
By pipes and tubes and cables and wires.
PojoMofo @ May 9th 2008 11:36AM
downloaded = shipped to your console??
That is a good point though, I just thought 2 mil would be too high for retail only, but maybe not

Considering it's two million SHIPPED to all three territories, I don't think it's too outrageous. Keep in mind, shipped could be sitting on retail shelves. Japan had it for a while, Europe loved it, no clue how it's doing in the states though I'd guess not good since most stores I've seen it at, the clerks are telling people not to pay for a demo... (then again, these are the same clerks who say Wii can play DVDs and that Microsoft has licensed Zelda).

Wow! Not my type of game, so I haven't contributed to that number, but super-impressive nonetheless!

I bought GT3.... got bored shitless saving up for my Dodge Viper. Finally purchased it, eager to take it on the track....
And I didn't have the right license. I do believe I have never uttered the phrase "fuck this game" more loudly than that moment....
baby sea tuna @ May 9th 2008 11:47AM
Ouch. Yeah, that was sort of my main beef with this series. I don't want to have to drive some Mazda6 or Honda Civic for 5 hours before I can score a Porsche or something. I get while people might want to, one of my best friends probably put 150 hours into GT3, but it's definitely not my thing.

See, in Ridge Racer, all the cars are sexy.... and once you unlock it, you can drive it. And you can hear the soundtrack. And drifting is fun.....
RIIIIDGE RAAACER!
ViagraFiend @ May 9th 2008 11:54AM
GTA is tough at first but incredibly rewarding once you can gain all of the licenses and start buying the good cars.
I still think the second one was the best though.
ViagraFiend @ May 9th 2008 11:55AM
I said GTA....wonder what Im thinking about..
xFenixKnightx @ May 9th 2008 1:21PM
Yes, Ridge Racer FTW! I'm with you all the way Fiddy. I bought the very first GT and never bought anymore. BORIIIIIING! IMO of course.

While I never much got into the games in enough detail to really change gear ratios (and know what I was doing) I've always enjoyed the games.
In a way, it almost felt like playing an RPG; level grinding so you can buy better equipment to defeat your opponents. But, with horsepower and racing wheels, not magic and swords.
ralphie @ May 9th 2008 11:10AM
grand turismo has always seemed so very lifeless to me.
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ May 9th 2008 11:15AM
The REAL driving simulator. Every other driving sim is irrelevent.
NATO_Duke @ May 9th 2008 11:24AM
There's that canned statement we all have forced on us each time GT comes up. Thanks!
baby sea tuna @ May 9th 2008 11:49AM
Forza would disagree.
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ May 9th 2008 11:59AM
Other than being able to customize your car, Forza is a joke. And don't tell me that it has damage. The "damage" in the game is not very realistic. Certain canned animations take place when the car gets hit. It does not take into account variables like momentumn, speed, impact angles, weight ratios, and more. Yamauchi has said many times he will NOT do damage until it can be done as realistically as GT does everything else. Each car in GT5 has over 200 individual parts ranging from the motor to the bumper. In the final game EACH ONE of these 200+ parts will be interchangable. So when damage is implemented in the fall update for Prologue, the game will take into account all of those individual parts when they impact with another car, or wall.
Forza looks like ass, the racing itself is servicable, and the damage is a JOKE.
Gran Turismo THE REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR
Bloo @ May 9th 2008 12:22PM
@Go White Sox and Go other Team
As the owner of every GT (except Prologue) and Forza 2, I must say, you are completely full of it.
NATO_Duke @ May 9th 2008 12:37PM
So, according to your argument, damage is all we use to demonstrate driving simulation? I driver for real each day without taking damage - so, am I not really driving?
BTW - Do you own Forza 2? Just curious since you damn it so strongly. I like it (and have it), and I have all the GT's other than the newest one. I don't think damage elements, whether you are right or wrong about the design of them, are the most important method to judge.
Stupidiot @ May 9th 2008 2:05PM
All of these console driving simulators are shit in a simulation sense. None of them feel even remotely real, not that it stops me playing them (Forza 2 being my favourite console racer). I personally really enjoy playing Live For Speed on PC using a racing wheel (logitech G25, with clutch pedal, gear shifter and all the trimmings) because, despite the slim selection of cars and poor graphics, the driving physics are pretty much spot on, and the game takes some real skill to play well. There's also the GTR series for PC which owns console simulators.
Haon @ May 9th 2008 11:16AM
I remember buying a ps1 just for gt1. Looking back at it now (played a few months ago) I just cant go back to it. I guess thats the nature of the series.
R_man_5K @ May 9th 2008 11:23AM
same here. I bought the PS1 for the first GT. Been hooked ever since. I have all of them and upgraded my ps system each time for this game...
of course I do play a few other games too... from time to time...
alu @ May 9th 2008 11:28AM
first GT was the last one i seriously played, it was a lot of fun.. but as i got older i just don't have patience for those games anymore, the 10-15 lap races, getting ridiculously hard licenses.. meh.
Maverick Saturn @ May 9th 2008 11:30AM
Lol, if people like arcades so much, get Wipeout or Motostorm, don't moan about how long it takes to do things. Thats like complaining that in WoW it takes too long to train up and all you want to do is go in and slay the biggest boss or you don't want to wait in an FPS to be able to get the biggest gun and fight the biggest boss.
Lol, this is the game, you earn money, do up your car, sell it and buy the next one up, don't like that, don't buy, lmao
GRANTED @ May 9th 2008 11:38AM
i like every part of this game except that f---ing nuremburg ring makes me want to kill myself.

IT'S OVER NINE Um...Crap I broke the scouter.
Well is over nine something trust me.
WLT @ May 9th 2008 3:57PM
I just started playing Forza 2 last week and I love it! All the customizing and tweaking and rewards for increasing AI difficulty, car control, etc etc etc. I spent last night tweaking my Tommy Kaira to get the fastest lap without the use of a turbo charger, 42 second lap and going!
I'm also a fan of GT and I cant wait for GT5 (he actual game and not the demo). And I can say that Forza 2 is better than the last GT4.
Of course, I'm still playing GT4 cuz there's still some cars I havent bought yet.
Iridium @ May 9th 2008 4:21PM
Forza just feels too floaty and the cars didn't feel different enough. GT4 was the most well rounded driving game that has ever been made. You could do anything, drift racing, rally racing, F1, road racing. The game was just crazy.
The sad thing about Gran Turismo is that you really need to get the Logitech Drving Force Pro to really appreciate the game. People complain about it but probably spent $160 on Rock Band. GT5P is amazing with it. Each car feels different and the force feedback adjusts accordingly. Steering in the EVOIX feels completely diffrent than the EVOX. Hop in a Mustang and you really feel the oversteer.
Nothing comes closer to real driving than sitting in front of a 50" TV with the interior view of GT5P and a driving force pro.
