Ikea'nt believe it: A fully functional giant NES controller/coffee table
First and foremost, apologies for the headline. If you can find it in your heart to forgive us, we're sure that the video above will tickle your fancy for gaming peripheral-themed furniture. We're not sure how much we'd pay for a custom-built, gigantic, functioning Nintendo Entertainment System controller (or a boxed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3, for that matter) that doubles for a coffee table with a removable glass overlay, but we could be convinced to skip a few months' rent should this epic furnitroller show up at our local Targét. Our landlord would certainly forgive us when we invite him over for an exhilarating round of comically oversized Bible Adventures.

I'd tickle her fancy for gaming peripheral-themed furniture.
Jnas @ May 11th 2008 2:11PM
I want one!
FSK405K @ May 11th 2008 2:17PM
Someone needs to make those. And include the girl with each one. http://wil.alambre.ca/dohgga/
Fernando Rocker @ May 11th 2008 2:23PM
I prefer the boxed Mario 3 included instead of the girl.
=p
Hiroken @ May 12th 2008 1:38PM
You would.
NukeAssault @ May 11th 2008 2:27PM
Didint G4 make a HUGE (quite possibly the largest) NES controller? Now that was awesome. Even if it wasent a table.
NukeAssault @ May 11th 2008 2:32PM
There was also a REALLY small one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLYx2cO_ccs
Vidikron (FU) @ May 11th 2008 2:28PM
I saw this over at Engadget a couple of days ago. There are some pictures showing the inside. The table opens up and he was storing games and other stuff inside. The only change I think he should make is to find a way to build a compartment for the NES inside the table.
Liam @ May 12th 2008 8:08AM
YES. A controller NES. But huge.
capt_carl @ May 11th 2008 2:35PM
I have a boxed copy of SMB3. :D
Tamachan87 @ May 11th 2008 2:48PM
It would have made more sense (to me) to have the NES inside that thing somewhere. Still awesome though.
Backslash @ May 11th 2008 3:03PM
That's pretty freaking cool.
noskillbassist @ May 11th 2008 3:06PM
He should ask Nintendo to produce these for sale.
thefunkyone @ May 11th 2008 3:26PM
Its a nice coffee table, but after all the effort the gimp went into building it, they leave the crude wireing job hanging out the side..... shoulda hidden it and had a nice clean cable coming out the bottom of it.....n00b !!!!!!
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ May 11th 2008 3:43PM
Thank god the NES didn't have shoulder buttons, rumble nor motion-sensing. ;)
lee @ May 11th 2008 3:49PM
coffee tables are awesome places to have sex on.
Jevanzz @ May 11th 2008 4:31PM
Dear Joystiq,
Everytime I try to vote a comment up or down I get a blank black screen. Sort it out, please.
Yours sincerely,
Jevanzz
chispito @ May 11th 2008 4:54PM
At the risk of offering complaints, yeah, the black screen thing is really starting to bother me when trying to follow links.
Neebs @ May 11th 2008 4:58PM
Really? Let me see...
lee @ May 11th 2008 4:34PM
like the coffee table. pretty much impractical though.
p.s. i think joystiq is somehow working with gametrailers because joystiq bloggers are refusing to report on the gametrailers mess up on the GRID comparisions. i have the vid. you can upload it and see for yourself at the end of the comparision. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=561DBBRI kotaku has written all about it already.
and joystiq if you delete this comment i saved the page and print screend this ill tell everyone you dont want people to know.
Justin McElroy @ May 11th 2008 5:37PM
Lee-
1. If your comment gets deleted (which it still may very well be), it's because it's completely off topic.
2. If you have the ability to tell "everyone" about our secret GameTrailers collabo, why don't you cut out the middle man and tell "everyone" about Gametrailers yourself?
chispito @ May 11th 2008 4:56PM
I'd like it more if it were an actual table instead of a chest and you could put your feet under it. But it's still a fantastic piece of workmanship. Where's the blaster... um... I actually have no idea how to make a blaster into a functional piece of furniture.
lee @ May 11th 2008 6:05PM
1.... the reasons why you refuse to blog that topic seem very conspicuous. and i was "on topic" for the first sentence. its a p.s. side note.
and 2... the fact is many people know, but the loyal fans to your site might not. and why should your blog community trust a site that won't report things like that? i don't want to be mean but if you delete this i will tell the gaming community of what happened.
i think its fair.
p.s. i wonder how much i could get that table on ebay?
Justin McElroy @ May 11th 2008 6:16PM
You're right lee, it's not off topic if your first sentence is on topic. Because we're stupid.
Perhaps we didn't post on it because just a TOUCH more likely than it being a vast Gametrailers/Microsoft conspiracy is the off chance that whatever intern making that comparison video screwed up.
Occam's razor FTW.
Vidikron (FU) @ May 12th 2008 12:02AM
@Justin
I really fail to see how this is any different than when a PGR screenshot was mistakenly used to promote the PS3. Joystiq did cover that one:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/pgr-screenshot-used-to-promote-ps3-again/
lee @ May 11th 2008 6:30PM
true. your right. still.
are all your blogs based solely on facts and you have nothing to do with rumors and speculations? dont think so. why not report on it as a possibility? a small uproar in the GT forums? its a pretty big deal. you can delete everything. whatever you want. sites still badass. you worry me almost as much as i lost faith on GT comparisons, until proven otherwise.
btw i have nothing better to do while waiting for summer I classes.
griffinjoystiq @ May 11th 2008 7:04PM
Lee,
There's a substantial difference between printing rumors such as the story I did about the Icarus concept art, and printing rumors that a popular video game news site has jeopardized its integrity -- the most important distinction being that the latter statement is borderline libelous. Defaming the character of a person (or publication, in this case) could lead to civil action -- especially in instances where the claim made is false.
Yes, the video in question was obviously erroneous -- but what possible reason could Gametrailers have had to purposefully doctor said footage? Their own bias for Microsoft/against Sony? They probably wouldn't risk such a mark on their name to add ammunition to a petty fanboy war. Perhaps a backdoor deal with Microsoft? Again, it's unlikely that either GT or MS would risk losing their integrity or gaining such negative PR over a few bucks and a flattering gameplay comparison for a non-blockbuster title.
It's likely an error on behalf of an intern or newhire, who would have been expediently fired. Out of a cannon. Into a knife factory. I know that in the wake of Gerstmann-gate, we're all a little jumpy about gaming publications selling out to "the man", but we can't let that fear turn into the kindling for a witch hunt.
Admittedly, however, deleting the video and not addressing the negative repercussions was not a wise move on Gametrailers' behalf. The illusion of underhandedness, especially in journalism, where integrity is our most important commodity, is just as bad as the outing of an actual underhanded act.
Smacksmackums @ May 11th 2008 6:42PM
I agree with the comments that say the wiring job and NES on the outside are lame. You could do the same thing and make a simple wire going to the TV for the connection.
Other than that though, which maybe is a future project, the thing rocks hard. I love it. I wish I had one too.
And to add to the other comments about the black screen when clicking links... I get that too. Typically it happens when trying to link to Xbox360fanboy.com at the bottom. I think it's a conspiracy like at game trailers.
Jimiisama @ May 11th 2008 7:18PM
I'd totally put my penis in that... the coffee table that is.
lee @ May 11th 2008 7:28PM
wow. that was beautifully written. definitely agree they did handle it wrong and should asap start repairing their pr.
but my distrust doesnt stem from a MS and gt colab. but ever since the new systems have come out, 360 games have generally looked better. so the majority of their fan base are xbox lovers. if the ps3 looked so much better than the 360 a huge bunch of people would stop watching those comparison vids. (including myself. why the hell would i want to know my version is inferior?) it may be that. but more than likely an accident. but very good points. i wouldn't want to build civil suit on my ass from someone so close and very essential to your work. just seems just a snag like a case of "don't bite the hand that feeds". generally speaking....yap yap yap yap yap....
but if you say so. i feel bad taking up your writing time but yeah. what you wrote is what i would think you should've posted up days ago. dont ban me. i heart joystiq. ha
lee @ May 11th 2008 7:37PM
thought this was an important note, you won't be jeopardized GameTrailer's integrity by reporting facts of what happened. people can decide for themselves. you you judged them right on the spot for being being a big phony (not that they are), i could see them retaliating.
just report the news i say. y'all know what i mean.... i feel like a 5 year old defending myself.
ToRo @ May 11th 2008 10:29PM
I would to have that controller. And i wouldn't mind having the girl using the controller either lol. The guy who uses it with looks like a douche though.
