GTA IV has 40% attach rate with new Xbox 360s, says Microsoft
The recently percentage-happy folks at Microsoft have unveiled a new statistic. According to a spokesperson on Major Nelson's podcast, trigger-happy carjacker Grand Theft Auto IV is having a 40% attach rate with new Xbox 360 consoles. "The game is attaching well to new consoles, roughly 40 percent of 360s going out the door had a copy of GTA IV going with them," he said.
We wouldn't put it past Microsoft to track receipt details, but we wonder how the statistic was derived. Correlation from total hardware sales, total software sales and the increase in sales? A look at all receipts from all major retailers? They're not going to tell, but the best to take from this is what we already knew: Grand Theft Auto IV is selling like gangbusters and taking everyone with it.

That sounds like statistics to me
Benny @ May 12th 2008 2:38PM
In before the inevitably unfunny percentage jokes.
PojoMofo @ May 12th 2008 2:42PM
one side of a story = fanboy paradise!!
Seriously though, GTAIV is making EVERYTHING sell, I bet PS3 numbers are similar
xFenixKnightx @ May 12th 2008 2:44PM
Hey Pachter go look outside the window, because thats where your stupid prediction went.
Benny @ May 12th 2008 3:09PM
Umm... Pachter could still be right? If 275 000 360s were sold this month as he predicts, all this means is that 40% we sold along with a copy of GTA:IV.
Killer Loki @ May 12th 2008 3:05PM
So, doesn't that mean that the other 60% is going to the PS3??
Benny @ May 12th 2008 3:09PM
No, it doesn't.
Vcize @ May 12th 2008 3:59PM
Loki, do you understand numbers?
Benny @ May 12th 2008 4:02PM
Only if they're arranged in a fashion that spells '1337'!
Killer Loki @ May 12th 2008 4:07PM
Perfectly understand numbers - don't get MS constant dick swinging and the need to put the PS3 down - seems to me they're scared. I couldn't care less, I have the 2 big consoles and enjoy them whatever their flaws are. Give me games - not numbers.
Benny @ May 12th 2008 4:11PM
Does the article mention the PS3 AT ALL?
The only people bringing it up are the Sony fanboys.
Benny @ May 12th 2008 4:13PM
And by the way... "scared"? It's a little thing called 'competition', and it does you, as a consumer, a few favours.
Curtis the Claw:PSN-ctclaw @ May 12th 2008 4:13PM
Loki you have no idea what your talking about do you?
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 4:19PM
Loki - the quote was "..roughly 40 percent of 360s going out the door had a copy of GTA IV going with them." So the other 60% is 360's sales that don't have a copy of GTA sold with them. They were not talking about the PS3 or attacking it.
rv @ May 12th 2008 4:55PM
When you think about it, who the hell would by a 360 that week and NOT buy gta?? Its strange that that number isn't higher...
Benny @ May 12th 2008 3:10PM
Damn people... reading the article tends to allow you to make a more informed and relevant comment. Maybe a few of you should try it.
koehler83 @ May 12th 2008 3:34PM
Only 40% of Xbox buyers (since GTA release) are walking out with GTA4? What are the other 60% walking out with? Halo 3? Nothing at all?!
Yo! Other 60% of this equation! Pick up your damn copy of GTA4 NOW! YOU FAIL!
LEMental @ May 12th 2008 3:37PM
I work in a Gamestop. I have SOME insight. Not overall insight, but at my level, this is pretty much true. We have sold out of the 360 version of the game twice, while the ps3 version has only gotten resupplied once. We also had more reserves of the 360 version than the PS3.
I have sold 4 used and 2 new 360's with the game attached to it. People wanna play GTA.
xFenixKnightx @ May 12th 2008 3:39PM
And how many PS3's have you sold with a copy of GTAIV along with it?
Mihn @ May 12th 2008 6:04PM
I haven't sold any personally. I cant speak for the chain as a whole, those numbers aren't available at the store level.
Our store, has historically been an XBOX store, though. I thought the launch of the PS3 would even it out. But, our ps3 base in our town is not there. I don't know why, it is a great system, with a winning media format.
People complain about 360's dying all the time, what about the extremely high failure of ps2 optical drives? Face it, each company has their kinks to work out.
It all boils down to preference, at this point.
Leobebes @ May 12th 2008 3:40PM
Guys don't kill me for saying this but I predict that MSG4 sales in the U.S. will struggle. I have a couple of little birdies from Gamespot telling me that MSG4 pre orders are lacking at this point of the sales cycle.
It could change once we get closer to the end of the month, but PS3 is looking more like the blue ray player of choice rather than a game machine.
Benny @ May 12th 2008 3:52PM
You should consider changing your name to Mr. Relevant.
marauder800 @ May 12th 2008 3:56PM
I'm not going to kill you LOL. I'm not excited for MGS4 at all, other than to double my PS3 game collection :) I wouldn't read into the preorders either. I don't preorder until one week to one day before the game ships. I don't hand over my money interest free!
Sean @ May 12th 2008 4:17PM
It wouldn't suprise me. It's not going to get COD4, Halo 3 or GTA4 numbers. Not in North America.
I am not saying it's going to be a bad game. Far from it. It's just that the game doesn't appeal to as wide an audience. I also bet people are waiting to see more of the game before pre-ordering anyway.
It will still be a money maker though.
Leobebes @ May 12th 2008 4:21PM
In Japan and Europe it will make a killing I bet, but I think gamers in America are more of an inpatient bunch and if a game with guns doesn't throw you into the action immediately and makes you wade through a ton of incoherent, badly translated cut scenes it won't move much.
I am not saying MSG4 is going to be bad because of the cut scenes, it could GOTY material, i might be a little bit out there for the American shooter fan.
el serpiente @ May 12th 2008 5:34PM
Wow, surprise. Raving xbox fanatic jihadist Leobabies doesn't think a sony game will do well. And tosses in the blu-ray only diss!
Do you remember MGS1, 2 and 3? Yeah, the american audience had such hard time connecting with those strange furrign games, they bought millions of copies out of apathy.
Leobebes @ May 12th 2008 5:52PM
@el serpiente
"Raving xbox fanatic jihadist"
I like that. Yea I am a little skewed towards the 360, Wii camp but I just think its due to byproduct of being told by Sony that I should've waited off on buying a 360 because the PS3 was heads and shoulders above the 360's capability. That ruined it for me when it comes to trusting Sony's credibility. It doesn't mean I wont cave in and buy one in the near future SCE still puts out some of the best title in the industry.
Now going back on the previous sales of MSG titles in NA. There has been a gradual decline in MSG sales for each iteration this is due to two factors.
1. The Splinter Cell series has taken away many fans that enjoy high budget stealth titles. The MSG series is no longer considered the only quality stealth game in town in NA.
2. The industry has changed since the last MSG title was released significantly. I think action game fans have grown tired of the Japanese style action game with prolonged cut scenes, and unrealistic surreal plot lines. I think the reason MSG was so popular in the PS1 PS2 days was because of the early foothold of Sony's consoles providing the only high budget action title on the market accessible to the general gaming public. Now with the rebirth of the FPS on consoles, and quality PC developers having success on consoles that action player demographic has moved on to instant gratification games like Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, and Resistance.
Sesur @ May 12th 2008 10:54PM
I agree about MGS; the plot has always been a little arcane. But I am biased I suppose... I haven't enjoyed a MGS game since the first PSX version.
PS.
thank you for not reducing yourself to el serpientes level. he's only fit to crawl on his belly like the slithering beast which shares his name.
el serpiente @ May 13th 2008 2:34AM
Your mom and I have the same name? COOL!
Go look at leobabies posting history. At least I am sane.
(Yeah, I made a mom joke. He set me up so well)

thank you for doing this for me...i was getting tired of it myself and I only did it a couple of times.
Med Striker @ May 12th 2008 5:09PM
Too bad it'll crash and freeze on those new systems too!
What's the numbers on people having to return those systems due to poor coding on Rockstar/Take 2's part?
http://forums.xbox.com/33/20258164/ShowPost.aspx#20258164
Benny @ May 12th 2008 5:44PM
You do realise lots of people had freezing issues with the PS3 version as well, don't you?
Med Striker @ May 12th 2008 5:50PM
Yeah but they were fortunate enough to have a patch put out.
And if I'm not mistaken this post is about the 360 and GTA IV. I never said it wasn't a problem elsewhere.
Sean @ May 12th 2008 7:00PM
I've had it freeze twice on me in the past week (game locks up, radio still plays). And according to the little stats page, my longest continuous game was just over 7 hours.
So you've blown the problem way out of proportion.
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 12th 2008 10:17PM
I haven't installed the patch yet and haven't had a single freezing issue on my launch 60gb PS3.
In fact, I'm having trouble installing the patch, several times it goes to 1% and stops and one time it stopped at 67%.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 12th 2008 6:14PM
No shit Sherlock.
The statement this makes (that people who buy new next-gen consoles seem to buy GTA IV at the same time) is so obvious as to make the article useless to print.
Yes, GTA IV is selling like hotcakes, to those who already have next-gen consoles and to those just purchasing them right now.
jayeffaar @ May 12th 2008 7:01PM
What I find remarkable then, is that 60% of people who recently bought a 360 did not also pick up GTA. WTF? I know the game isn't for everyone, but I still find that 40% stat a bit low.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 13th 2008 3:49AM
Maybe they already got it at another store, or are going to, or the store was out of GTA IV copies at the time.
