Joystiq interview: GameTrailers EIC sets record straight on GRID controversy
There's been a lot of controversy surrounding GameTrailer's comparison video of Race Driver: GRID, which pitted the PlayStation 3 version up against ... um ... the PlayStation 3 version. Is the site horrifically biased? On Microsoft's payroll? We spoke with GameTrailers Editor In Chief, Shane Satterfield, to clear up the matter.
How did this mistake happen?
It was a mistake in our post-production process. After we captured the footage from both versions, some of the footage of the PlayStation 3 version of the game was incorrectly placed in the bin for the Xbox 360 footage. Our video editor on this particular project is not a games person and completely overlooked the fact that he had the wrong footage in the wrong place. We normally have multiple checks from games editorial on every segment that is published, but there was some confusion on who did/did not look at it before it was sent out for compression. Thus, the mistake.
Was the audio narrative written before, after or during the video editing process? Was it based on the video published or an actual comparison of PS3 and Xbox 360?
There is no audio narrative in the video we produced. People went in and inserted their own audio narrative and then tried to pass those videos off as media we produced to suit their own agenda. We have never had any sort of audio or text commentary in any of our comparison videos.
What is the process by which you vet and edit these videos? How many people (and who) proof these videos before they go live?
I think I answered this one above. Obviously our procedures that are put in place did not succeed in this case, but it will never happen again.
What other videos have been pulled in the site's history?
This is the first piece of media we've had to pull down due to something like this.
Is this an endemic issue?
It is definitely an issue that's unique to our business because it's difficult to find video editors that are as embedded into video games as much as the GameTrailers editorial staff. Therefore we have to include more fail safes than the average gaming site to make sure things like this don't happen. While these fail safes are in place, this was the first case where the process was not adequate.
Why were comments disabled, forums posts deleted, etc?
Honestly, I don't know anything about this happening. The video was removed immediately once the mistake was noticed, so there wasn't an opportunity for us to even close the comments on it because it was no longer live on the site. If forum posts were deleted it was likely because there were so many threads about it that the moderators decided to cull them down to one thread, but I do not know this for a certainty. We do not close threads on GameTrailers because of criticism. If you take a look in our forums there are plenty of examples of users giving us criticism--constructive or otherwise. Feedback is essential to improving a product.
By merit of being the only player in the comparison, doesn't the PlayStation also win?
Haha! Well, there is footage from the 360 version in the comparison, but admittedly there's no way to make an educated decision due to our mistake. We're working on an updated version of the video that will lead with an apology for the gaffe.
How recently had the intern been hired?
What intern? I'm not sure what you're asking about here. We're not going to call out anyone publicly for a mistake that they made, though. The situation has definitely been dealt with, though.
Why do you hate the PlayStation SO MUCH? How much does Microsoft give you?
Ha! We haven't had any advertising from Microsoft on GameTrailers.com for over two years. In all honesty, we made a mistake and we're terrible sorry for it. We're also putting measures in place to ensure it never happens again. It's surprising how paranoid people are and how desperate they can be to try and manipulate the masses into believing that there's some kind of malicious activity going on that will slight their favorite console.
It blows my mind and saddens me that people took the time to go in and doctor our original piece of media to make us look worse. I'm also disappointed that so many publications ran their stories without contacting us for the real story and instead took the word of random Internet folks who were totally manipulating the situation.

Of course, the moral of the story is that if we had not made a mistake this wouldn't be happening, but at the same time I'm shocked that such an innocent mistake has been portrayed as intentional and malicious. We work hard to make sure there's quality content for everyone on the site, and when stuff like this happens you feel a litle betrayed by the people you're working so hard for. Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where people just enjoyed video games regardless of what platform they're released for?

Of course it was 'just a mistake'. Has any company in the history of time actually owned up to something not being 'just a mistake'.
And of course, the EIC has no clue on what the deal is with comments...or perhaps the answer is not one he likes to share...since that couldn't also 'just be a mistake'.
SoulBlade @ May 12th 2008 6:21PM
MS still hasn't completely fessed up, but they did shell out a billion dollars for their mistake.
jsn @ May 12th 2008 6:38PM
the 360 version is still the one to own and that holds true 99% of the time. So who cares, they made a mistake, big deal.
el serpiente @ May 12th 2008 10:06PM
I think jsn was the intern!
joystiqhypocrites @ May 12th 2008 11:41PM
Two things. First, this isn't the first anti-Sony act they have come up with.
Second, reading Kotaku, a guy pointed out something I had not noticed before. Each console has a forum. Each forum has a subheading. All of the consoles get a cool subheading except Sony.
Example, the 360 is called "The Concave Beast Awakens"
The DS is called "Nintendos Handheld Army"
But the PS3 is called the PS2 times 1.5.
The PSP is called the finger print machine.
After all, if they were being fair they would call the Wii "Wave your hands at butt ugly graphics" They would call the 360 "Cook fish on Microsofts overheating machine!"
They are owned by MTV, which is owned by Viacom and Microsoft. After that fiasco where they were caught intentioanlly downgrading PS3 graphics during video capture I could care less for those bunch of liars.
the_insider @ May 13th 2008 1:03AM
By the way, this game by far looks the best on a PC. 1900x1200 resolution, 8xAA, 60+ fps, more FX/Particles, knock out either console version and wipe the floor with them. Once you've seen that, the differences in the console versions these fanboys argue over becomes a laughing matter. If you want to know how Codemasters made those first trailers that just looked that little bit 'too good' incomparison with the actual console trailers/footage then you know now. ;)
Thorlord @ May 13th 2008 1:50AM
joystiqhypocrites your forum note is quite astute, but unfortunately sounds slanderous out of context.
here it is in context:
PSP "The fingerprint machine that doubles as a media lunchbox." (an insult followed by a compliment)
PS2 "It's like the PS1... times two!" (Math, 1x2=2)
PS3 "It's like the PS2... times 1.5!" (Math, 2x1.5=3)
Xbox "Discussion about the Xbox and its wonderful bear size controllers." (insult veiled as a compliment by the word "wonderful" also known as sarcasm)
360 "The concave beast awakens." (im not seeing how this is either way, its kinda just describing its shape and that it is a beast? compliment i guess)
PC "PC games and their mouse-related hijinks." (whoohoo hijinks!!!)
they are being silly, not insulting.
oh, and for everyone saying that Microsoft owns viacom, not true, Microsoft paid $500 million to sell Viacom's stuff on XBL... just business partners, and in business you don't throw in things free.
if this is bias, the only bias it would be is from the editor of that clip, not the company, parent company, or their associates. sorry thats honestly as deep as you can claim this goes.
joystiqhypocrites @ May 13th 2008 3:04AM
No Thorlord, you are not correct First of all the PSP is called a lunchbox. Think about it. That isn't the best term.
Also your math is off. It isn't 2 x 1.5, okay? It is a PS2 X 1.5 = PS2 version 1.5. You see it is 1 each PS2 Machine x 1.5 = PS2 1.5, not PS2 version 3. Simply put it is 1 (1 each PS2 unit) x 1.5 = 1.5
Vcize @ May 13th 2008 10:12AM
joystiqhypocrites, you need to stop spending so much time on this blog and go take a remedial math course.

But then he fucked up and said that shit!
Dan Bugglin @ May 12th 2008 6:22PM
Because then the gamers who watch the videos can make educated decisions about which version they want to get.
Satterfield is saying we shouldn't be quibbling over which console is better and just enjoy video games. Obviously there are people who share this feeling because with all the fanboys bashing the Wii it still continues to be sold out over a year and a half after it was released.
The comparison videos don't in any way go against that sentiment, indeed they complement it by acknowledging there ARE differences between console versions of games, but rather than trying to tell you what version is superior they provide videos to let each gamer decide for him or herself.
robb @ May 13th 2008 3:26PM
exactly what i was thinking,
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ May 12th 2008 6:46PM
Well then, Dan bugglin, why is this the fourth time Gametrailers has been taken to task for these comparison videos?
Awfully strange that when the differences are clear, they make active attempts to show similar gameplay (see NBA Street Homecourt, Assassin's Creed, AC4) yet that was missing on this outing. Not to mention they've been consistantly reminded to check their video settings on their PS3 they capture from but they keep on with an incorrectly calibrated PS3.
Not saying this was intentional or not, but why does this keep occuring? Why is it someone like me, who rarely watches these comparison videos, have heard about four seperate incidents? I can only imagine how often it's occured if I was paying attention.
Easo @ May 12th 2008 8:35PM
Sony fanboys dont like gametrailers because every time a comparison video comes out, the ps3 version is usually less than or equal to the 360 version.
Its not gametrailers fault. When Oblivion looked better on the ps3, the put the video up. When The Darkness looked better on the ps3, they put that video up too.
Now look at the footage in question
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZzMKlYTNgU&feature=related
Even before the mix up scene, there was little to no difference between the two versions of the game, but it can clearly be seen that the videos are slightly different. The 360 version is a little darker in the shadowy sections of the race and the cars though on the same track follow slightly different paths. So with that said, how easy would it be to mislabel the footage or place a file in the wrong folder. People make mistakes and that seems like what happened.
ruibing @ May 12th 2008 10:49PM
Yeah that got to me, along with his comment about no MS advertisement on GT. I've recently seen several for GTAIV that ends with the 360 logo, meaning they were sponsored and paid for by MS.
kobebryunt @ May 12th 2008 6:08PM

Matt B @ May 12th 2008 7:50PM
KM,
I have my moments of weakness as do you. I post here and PS3 Fanboy. You post here and 360 Fanboy. Are you implying somehow that you are less of one and can justify calling me a fanboy?
I personally don't care. Sticks 'n stones and all that. You know the meme

Seeing Koby's post history is a real treat. In one post, insulting PS3fanboys who downplayed the new Cities GTA4 DLC and immediately after that, labelling himself as a Sony Fanboy while claiming that Gears 2 is going to beat MGS4, in the hope that someone will take his comment seriously. I love it!

because GT prob hoped the issue would die down
when it didn't and they realized they had a potential Gerstmangate on their hands that would hurt their bottom line, they realized they had to address it
Thorlord @ May 13th 2008 1:50AM
or they didn't notice until we pointed it out.
your conspiracy theory is cool though.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 12th 2008 6:11PM
Still missing the point.
It doesn't matter how the video footage got messed up.
It is the initial premise that was wrong and potentially derived from bias. The footage is all from PS3 and shows dynamic crash physics on the PS3 version. Thus the initial argument was wrong.
This is the problem, not that they were caught using bad footage to back up their thesis. It's that they came to a conclusion, then selected video that seemed to back it up, instead of reaching a decision based upon the actual facts.

paulypies @ May 12th 2008 10:05PM
This is conspiracy theories gone mad. Surely gametrailers staff would capture footage of doing similar things on each system and then they would hand the footage to a video editor. on a website that focuses entirely on game videos, they probably have a fair few and a mistake could be made. It's quite clear that's what happened as there isn't any 360 footage. They're not going to put out a video with such an obvious 'giveaway' on intentionally for a video thats entire purpose is to be scrutinised.
I'm guessing most of the people that had a problem (including the guy that posted the video on youtube with the comments throughout) don't own both systems, so is kind of irrelevant. Surely it's only of constructive use to someone to help make a purchase decision if they own both systems, or perhaps if someone is looking to buy a system and deciding which system games tend to look better.
And since when does a video show you whether a game is good fun to play? the demo is out...
SWAT Kats are back! @ May 12th 2008 6:16PM
Our video editor on this particular project is not a games person
One would assume this would be a prerequisite for working for GameTrailers.com
Sean @ May 12th 2008 6:20PM
You would assume wrong. The only prerequisite is that you can edit footage.
Or do you think that everyone at dunder mifflen LOVES paper and paper-related products?
sythis @ May 15th 2008 10:16PM
I've worked for GT and I can tell you first hand, they do have a very robust system for checking videos. I just hate seeing this get blown out of proportion by Kotaku.
And no, it is not easy to find fast video editors who can produce good work in short periods of time (as this industry requires) who also are savvy with games.
If you only saw the amount of work Brandon and some of the other dudes (and gals) have to go through to get some of our features up you'd quickly overlook this issue. Literally thousands of gigs of video go through the site and the editing servers on a daily basis. Keeping track of all of them is almost impossible. Almost, everyone tries really hard.
mike @ May 12th 2008 6:18PM
I call bullshit on the mistake and their excuses interview. I edit plenty of videos myself (see my youtube page) and theres no way in hell anyone could make a mistake like this. You cant make a comparison video unless you know what your comparing. And you cant compare stuff unless you have recorded 2 sets of footage and know what to compare with what and where to make the cuts. This just could never happen
Are they in microsofts pocket? I dont think so, but whoever made the video is clearly an amature and xbox biased in how they tried to slander the ps3 version.
For the record im an xbox guy (hate ps3), but I would never fake a video like this to make a version look better then the other. Now I wont trust a single gametrailers video comparison again.
Threads and posts always get deleted over contraversies like this, and the big company always comes in claiming hit like we had no idea. Money makes the world retarded.
Microswirl @ May 12th 2008 6:43PM
"Now I wont trust a single gametrailers video comparison again"
Good, then you've caught up to the rest of us.
potato @ May 12th 2008 7:08PM
I call bull on it. When you do a comparison vid, you record two sets of videos - one from each platform. You keep these in separate folders, something like:
/game-comparison/xbox
/game-comparison/ps3
If the person who recorded the video stuck the footage into the wrong folder, the editor (who is a non-gamer) would never know the difference.
He might think it odd that the two comparisons look the same, but given how similar GTA4 was the guy may have looked past it.
This is a mistake I would see *myself* making, and I'm not new to this stuff either. It MAY be a coverup, but I simply do not see any website being so stupid.
gates @ May 12th 2008 6:22PM
thing is....even if they did realize that whoever was responsible for this huge screwup was some xbox fanatic or Sony hater...would they come out and admit it?
HELLO NO.
If they did, then every single video comparison and review of theirs would be tainted.
So they have to portray it as the rare once in a lifetime mistake.
Well you can't fool me, EIC! *shakes fists*
Nick the Hero of Canton @ May 12th 2008 6:29PM
If they wanted to manipulate people into thinking the 360 version was better, they'd just take footage from a crappy crash on the PS3 version.
They aren't dumb enough to label the Ps3 version 360 to make it look like the 360 was superior when it's clear it was the PS3 version.
JetPogi @ May 12th 2008 6:32PM
