New games this week: We Ski edition?
It's not unintentional that this week's headline ends with a question mark. We just wanted to be completely clear that we have no clue what the best game being released this week will be. There are just too many questions! On the one hand, you've got Prince Caspian, which is a licensed game. The trouble there is obvious. Then you've got Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm, which we'd love to be good so we can feel like men (if only virtually) for a few hours. But let's be honest: It probably won't be.
So, the honor falls to We Ski. Can we promise you that it's not solely because it's really funny when you say its name aloud? No, dear reader. No we can't. We're hoping next week will be better; you can check out the whole month right here.

This is the one game that I would actually want to try out with the balance board. Yea, I'll admit it. :P Must book another vaca to Colorado.
baby sea tuna @ May 12th 2008 9:33AM
Uh, isn't the balance board like, not out yet? Did they not get the memo? Not that it matters, since most people are probably still playing GTA anyway.
samfish @ May 12th 2008 9:34AM
Definitely Castle of Shikigami III for me, although I might hold off until I move since I'll be packing my Wii up probably on Wednesday.
And Lost Winds on Wii Ware, since it's supposedly a launch title.
I also intend to rent either Deca Sports or We Ski and see which one I like better.
Stormsurge @ May 12th 2008 9:40AM
Nintendo Power gave We Ski a 6.0, which translates into a pretty crappy game given that they never really score anything below a 5.
samfish @ May 12th 2008 9:42AM
Yeah, well, they also gave Okami a 7, which kinda throws their credibility out the door.
TheHuntIsOn @ May 12th 2008 9:51AM
Not when Okami on the Wii isn't that great a port.
And WTF is a Nintendo Power?
baby sea tuna @ May 12th 2008 9:54AM
A Nintendo Power was a publication that was once both popular and interesting. The year was 1988.
samfish @ May 12th 2008 10:03AM
"Not when Okami on the Wii isn't that great a port."
It actually is. The only thing that's really wrong with it is the stupid waggle reflector attacks. Once you get the rosary, though, that problem goes away.
And believe me – I bitched up a storm about it and I've completely changed my mind now.
Not as good as the PS2 version, but still NOT worthy of a 7. A high 8 or low 9 would be more accurate.
Noshino @ May 12th 2008 11:33AM
samfish,
It wasn't only that, there are many complaints about the Wii version, they claim that the controls aren't well calibrated and that in general the controls are a pain unlike the PS2 version, well, the only thing they praise about the Wii controls is the celestial brush...
Anyway, that alone could have made the game rank below an 8...
samfish @ May 12th 2008 12:08PM
No way. There are only two problems with the controls – reflector attacks don't work worth a crap and Fleet foot is completely broken.
But otherwise, the controls are sufficient. I would have made it so the up and down buttons on the D-pad serve as action buttons for Dig and Map and you have to hold the C button to use the D-pad as a camera..but that's just me.
The rest of the game's problems are up to the individual player...amped up colors, less prominent paper filter, ink bleed effect isn't prominent, etc.
Don't get me wrong – I'll never say the Wii version is superior, but it's NOT so bad or broken that it's worth a 7.
Noshino @ May 12th 2008 1:00PM
well, for me the original was worth a 9, so if all the complaints about the Wii version are true, then I would have also given it a 7...
Seriously, I know that the Wiimote can't be used for everygame, but goddamn, this was one game for which the IR pointer and motion sensing was meant for!
Jacksons @ May 12th 2008 1:15PM
There's always a few reviews that are well below the average. 7/10 for Halo 3? 6/10 for Ratchet: ToD? 5/10 for Mario Kart: Double Dash? 3/10 for God Hand!? ...and that's why there's meta reviews.
Anyway, We Ski? I'm not expecting much.
Jody Anthony (cookingrebels.com) @ May 12th 2008 2:22PM
my only problem with Okami Wii is that it won't stop freezing on me. I am currently about 18 hours into the game, not counting the five freezes where I've lost almost an hour of progress each time.
still, lovely game and I will suffer through the freezes to play through it again.
BPM [SSBB: 5026 4120 1186] @ May 12th 2008 2:30PM
Amusing thing about NP's review of Okami is that they said the PS2 version was better.
joevill @ May 12th 2008 10:03AM
Will anyone be picking up Myst? I never played it for the PC when it originally game out. The 7th Guest overkilled that genre for me for during that period.
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 10:07AM
Heck no. I just never understood its popularity. I played it a few times and found it to be excessively unthrilling. Just wasn't my thing I guess.
t_m @ May 12th 2008 12:14PM
the uk release of Myst DS apparently had load of problems.. so it'd be worth checking if they fixed them before buying. search amazon.co.uk customer reviews first.
Nicholas Sulikowski @ May 12th 2008 12:40PM
I'll probably be picking it up...again. Even though I own the original Windows 3.1/95 compatible version. Just so I can say I have MYST on the go.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ May 13th 2008 1:22AM
Never played Myst, the once forever-staying number-one game of the charts, but here's what I heard about it:
- It was an incredibly silly game, understandable by the average Joe (read: mass-market gamer), whose sole reason for popularity was because since it had such beautiful graphics for its time, it helped somewhat justify the advent of the expensive CD-drive in personal computing.
- Myst DS sucks notably due to the small size of the DS screen: apparently the switches are incredibly hard to find due to that.
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 10:12AM
OK, here's my big prediction.
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian will be the hit this week. In fact, it will be one of the best licensed games in years.
Why? Two words - talking lion.
You can't blow a formula using talking lions. People love talking lions. Seriously, you know you all want to meet a talking lion.
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 10:15AM
Oh, and Minotaurs...I mean, c'mon! Minotaurs!!!
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ May 12th 2008 11:09AM
Also, since the Lion is actually Jesus, it has even MORE win.
t_m @ May 12th 2008 12:15PM
well... the first narnia movie had a talking lion, and it was awful.. so...
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 1:11PM
OMG t_m, are you dissing Jesus!!!!?
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ May 13th 2008 1:23AM
The witch was really the only awesome thing about the movie... well, except for that very pedo-esque encounter between the little girl and the faun near the beginning. ;)
Manton Reece @ May 12th 2008 10:16AM
Don't forget the WiiWare titles. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, LostWinds, and a few more. I bought LostWinds this morning and love it so far.
ScottyGEE32 @ May 12th 2008 10:19AM
"we ski on wii" Just wouldn't sound right compared to all the other "on wii" tv commercials.
t_m @ May 12th 2008 12:29PM
is there a We Snowboard in the works?
embassy @ May 12th 2008 12:40PM
anybody else picture a frenchman asking for some whiskey when they say "we ski" out loud?
le whiskey si vous plait!
mike shea @ May 12th 2008 12:55PM
we ski?
more like WHISKEY
AMIRITE?
wickedneoq @ May 12th 2008 1:45PM
Which I'll probably be drinking this week when I play "We Ski". That way, it'll get me prepared for the Balance Board next week.
See what I did there?
KiraXD @ May 12th 2008 12:58PM
why is the only game that doesnt use Wii for the cliche' "WE"? for 99% of all Wii games? just curious.
embassy @ May 12th 2008 1:10PM
ciz its not made by nintendo?
im pretty sure nintendo owns the exclusive rights to use "wii" in thier titles.
Pigeon 123 @ May 12th 2008 9:49PM
