OMGS4: Guns of the Patriots gets its first 10
Grand Theft Auto IV? 10! Halo 3? 10! The Orange Box? 10! And Metal Gear Solid 4? 10, of course! The UK's Official PlayStation Magazine has given Snake's stealthy send-off full marks, sticking a nice, round "10" at the end of a lengthy justification. "Ultimately, this is a game for fans -- and you should be one," writes Paul Fitzpatrick. "As for Snake? It turns out his last stand really is his finest hour."
Yes, we know. "No game is perfect!" You're right. "10 doesn't necessarily mean perfect!" That's true. "The promise of next-generation technology is finally paying off with increasingly immersive, detailed and hitherto impossible experiences!" Could be. "Snake's last stand is only an hour long wtf?!" Okay, you are an idiot.
We can't wait for more reviews to roll in, if only to see further evidence of Kojima stubbornly sticking to his comically over-the-top guns. You can cry about cutscenes all you want, but the man is finishing his story.

Man, I'm running out of money for these games. And time. My finals are going to be horrible.
GenBanks @ May 12th 2008 1:33PM
I'm with ya... I've got a Russian exam on Wednesday and a worryingly large chunk of my "revision" has consisted of listening to the Vladivostok FM radio station in GTA IV.
Jtenma @ May 12th 2008 2:25PM
Ay dudes, I just finished my exams and amm out of school....feel sorry for you guys!
Vegnagun bwf @ May 12th 2008 7:40PM
Even if you have to stoop low to get money for MGS4, you'll still have played MGS4.
BananaBoat @ May 13th 2008 12:02AM
I lament the fact that the 10 is dead in the "Maybe once a decade, Famitsu will issue one" sense. Other than that, I'm pretty excited to play MGS4, even though I haven't really picked up MGS since 3, and I haven't really given the actual story any attention since...well...since I had to play as Raiden for a stretch in II. I have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on in 4, so hopefully there will be a refresher course somewhere.
kbomb1upc @ May 12th 2008 12:34PM
I really hope this game is as good as advertised. I haven't played an epic game since God of War II. Uncharted was fun but not epic.
FOXHOUND @ May 12th 2008 12:39PM
There were some crazy action sequences(one of which I swear appears in the new Indy movie, but I won't go into arguing over who was first; it ain't worth it). It's one of those games you just can't go without playing if you have a PS3. I look forward to a prequel or sequel.
SoulBlade @ May 12th 2008 12:45PM
Play Chains of Olympus if you like God o War. Great game.
Haon @ May 12th 2008 12:46PM
Uncharted is the only ps3 game that Ive played trough a few times so I agree with your "can't go without playing" line. I just hope the msg4 cut scenes dont make me roll my eyes like the previous three.
kbomb1upc @ May 12th 2008 12:48PM
@FOXHOUND
I wouldn't mind if Uncharted became the new Tomb Raider. It has great developers, great storyline, likeable characters and beautiful scenery. I would love to see more iterations of this game as long as they can raise the bar.
Bleu @ May 12th 2008 1:30PM
I love the metal gear cut scenes...This game is goin to be a 12 in my book I am going to buy 2 copies of this game.
GenBanks @ May 12th 2008 1:35PM
Can you give me your spare copy of the game then, bleu?
religiousjedi @ May 12th 2008 12:35PM
I seriously regret not trying it out at E for All... ;-;
That being said...my b-day is 9 days away...anyone wanna buy me a PS3 and MGS4? ;)
FOXHOUND @ May 12th 2008 12:36PM
And to be fair, as I said for those other games that got a 10... "it's probably a 10, but really a 9.5 due to minor nitpicky issues".
Mine's paid off(I wish the damn PS3 bundle would be available for reserve already); just waiting for the magical day.
KVN @ May 12th 2008 12:40PM
I'll pay attention when ign and/or gamespot gives is a 10 not Uk psm.
GaryM @ May 12th 2008 12:46PM
The official PS3 magazine liked a PS3 game?
Oh look at this... @ May 12th 2008 1:05PM
As if a Nintendo magazine isn't any better:

colinbell @ May 12th 2008 1:04PM
That was my first reaction as well, so I checked out their scores.
Uncharted: 9
Resistance: 9
Motorstorm: 8
Ratchet: 9
heavenly sword: 8
Lair: 6
UT3: 9
So 2 things stand out
1. Their scores are pretty much close to average scores for the game
2. Going by just this review - this is easily the best exclusive on the PS3- better than Uncharted even
And the only game that got 10 from them, as far as I see, is this one
"It's so good that it ruins you for other games. Once you've played it you'll be spoiled, expecting everything to be as stylish, immersive and balls-out brilliant as Modern Warfare."
CoD4 of course...did I even have to say it?
So I guess its safe to expect an experience at par with the unchallenged game of the year of 2007!
Trev @ May 12th 2008 1:13PM
@oh look
I don't think he was denying that other official mags have liked exclusives, just pointing out that OPM isn't a neutral source on the PS3 or its games.
Colin provided some of their other scores, which I agree with for the most part. Uncharted was a solid title and
Trev @ May 12th 2008 1:17PM
...and I hit add somehow...
Uncharted was solid and really accomplished its goal of being a playable action movie, Resistance had a solid single player campaign and an interesting story and so on. They gave Lair an appropriately low score. They may have been a little too kind to Motorstorm and UT3, but they don't appear to be complete tools.
I'm not saying I totally believe what OPM says, but even with grain of salt, 10/10 implies a very good game.
TheHuntIsOn @ May 12th 2008 1:32PM
Colinbell instantly made the score void.
Firenfunk @ May 12th 2008 2:41PM
colinbell, you're quoting the US OPM scores I believe - the UK OPM scores are as follows (with Gamerankings scores in brackets):Resistance 7 (86.8)Uncharted 9 (89.7)Heavenly Sword 7 (80)Lair 6 (55.8)Motorstorm 8 (82.5)Warhawk 9 (84.4)UT3 7 (86.1)Ratchet & Clank 9 (88.5)
embassy @ May 12th 2008 12:44PM
i disregarded Xbox mag's 10 for halo, and nintendo power's 10 for SSB. I think i'll do the same for OPM's 10 for MGS.
sparki @ May 12th 2008 1:24PM
Yea, this is one of those instances where nothing but a 10 is expected. If OPM gave it anything less than a 10 this would be a lot more news worthy. Same goes for your SSBB and Halo mentions... Right now, it's only "Duh!!" worthy.
Off Topic, OPM is the best acronym for a fanboy mag to have. Beats OXM and NP w/o trying. OPM: Keeping the addicts hooked.
Esat Dedezade @ May 12th 2008 1:28PM
Official UK Xbox magazinge gave Halo 3 a 9.
Ethan @ May 12th 2008 1:45PM
Xbox magazine is probably the least lapdog-like magazine, but it's still up there.
NESv1 @ May 12th 2008 12:44PM
Was there any doubt?
It'll be great to have an AAA-class EXCLUSIVE title on the PS3 after so long. I really hope E3 this year will reveal several more games of this quality in the coming near future for my PS3.
copa @ May 12th 2008 12:50PM
Yup, based on the overall advance buzz (not just PSM), it looks like the PS3 may have its first AAA-exclusive title.
And I strongly suspect that its second AAA-exclusive will be coming with Little Big Planet in the fall.
Way to turn up the heat, Sony. Competition is good.
baby sea tuna @ May 12th 2008 1:09PM
1st AAA exclusive? B-b-b-b-ut what about Lair and Heavenly Sword?!
Sike. I do, however, think this game is going to kick massive amounts of ass. Hopefully I'll at least get to replay MGS2 in preparation (I had to scale back my plans of replaying the entire series in chronological order, after getting hopelessly addicted to GTAIV.)
NATO_Duke @ May 12th 2008 1:07PM
I expected this game to be pretty damn polished. Though people may blow off a 10 review and cry that its just propoganda - you can't deny that its overall a great series, and they would likely use all of the best elements for this one. Should be a great play!
Phinehas @ May 12th 2008 3:17PM
So why will it be great to have an EXCLUSIVE title on the PS3? Are exclusive titles more fun in some non-schadenfreude kind of way? Or do you just mean you'll be happy that the PS3 isn't excluded?
svenhoek @ May 12th 2008 12:45PM
The fact that this comes from an OPM takes away from some of the OMG A 10!!11 factor that seeing a perfect score can bring. PLus, after GTA4 got near perfects down the board, not 2 weeks ago, this isnt as big of a deal as it WOULD have been.
Still would love to try it, but that wont happen until we get a universal game system. And im not spending $500 on a PS3 after I just spent the same amount on my Elite.
ViagraFiend @ May 12th 2008 4:11PM
lol @ buying the elite
Levi @ May 12th 2008 6:58PM

Glen @ May 12th 2008 12:51PM
Anyone not see this coming? It's MGS4.
is @ May 13th 2008 4:50AM
Exactly - was there ever any doubt?
Is there any doubt that I now have to get a PS3?
Is there radical doubt about the existance of the physical universe that can only be removed by the presence of a veracious God?
Kiff, Im asking you a question.
GMonkey @ May 12th 2008 12:55PM
The problem isn't all the 10s in themselves, but rather that the press overrates every single, previously hyped game that is released, be it MGS, GTA, Halo, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock, or whatever.
If all these games had loads of 8s and 9s instead of 10s, they'd still be overrated.
baby sea tuna @ May 12th 2008 1:10PM
I disagree with your assessment of all of those games.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 12th 2008 1:55PM
I agree with you assessment of these games.
The press is way to soft nowdays.
t_m @ May 13th 2008 5:10AM
Do you LIKE any games?
The problem isn't with the ratings of those games, which were all great. Its the fact that fanboys seem obsessed with scores.
WHen was the last time you saw people arguing over the relative scores of a movie or an album?
Every games website should just switch to a 5 star system.
Once you get to comparing a 94% to a 96%, when all reviews are subjective anyway, it just gets silly.
GMonkey @ May 13th 2008 7:24AM
The problem isn't just the scores. Most reviews are also just a bunch of blanket statements (like "deepest RPG ever", or even "this is *insert developer name here*'s new game therefore it's awesome") that actually say nothing about the game, and just smack of laziness, ass kissing and incompetence.
Steve @ May 12th 2008 12:56PM
You can pretty much automatically ignore any review from an official magazine. If you don't, you're an idiot.
And i never saw the appeal of MGS, seems like another incredibly overhyped game. Like Halo 3.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 12th 2008 2:22PM
Hate to burst your bubble, but some of the xbox only magazines and websites were the reason why the 360 version of GTA 4 dropped to 99 early on and stayed there.
OXM, the magazine that gives EVERY big 360 game a 10 including the most overrated game of all time (halo 3), only gave GTA a 9.5
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 12th 2008 12:56PM
10 is the new 8.5.
Jfk Aok @ May 12th 2008 1:20PM
Yeah, pretty much. In a way you made me laugh but in a way you made me think. Halo 3, Half life 2, Oblivion Smash Bros Brawl, GTA4 and now this. They're all good games and worth playing, sure... but the fantastic games don't get reviews like this because they're too different and don't have the IP "pedigree" and the hype.
Games are reviewed by hype now...and by all means MGS4 get's a 10 out of 10 in the hype-o-meter. The game might be a 10 (like Super mario galaxy or Bioshock really DID deserve) or a 6. If it is anything like MGO, it's a 7 or 8 if I've ever seen it. That's beside the point because I have no clue...this junk-zine tells me what I already knew; this game's hype is a perfect 10. MGS marketing gets a 10/10 for perfect execution.
Not only that, but good taste in video games doesn't get you subscribers. You have to be one with the masses to get the masses to buy your crap. Video games don't have oscars that celebrate good artistic culture and awareness...we have our version of the emmy's though and our magazines follow suit.
baby sea tuna @ May 12th 2008 1:30PM
JFK,
I would not base any assessment of MGS's campaign on MGO's beta. Kojima (as well as the Japanese, in general) have so far proven that their games' online components are nowhere near where they need to be when compared to their single player campaigns.
xFenixKnightx @ May 12th 2008 1:38PM
Yeah MGO was pretty good, I havent played it or wanted to replay it lately so thats sais alot right there I guess. I dont expect it to be anything like the campaign though.
Phinehas @ May 12th 2008 3:32PM
"Games are reviewed by hype now..."
+1
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 12th 2008 6:20PM
I'm not pooping on MGS specifically, more along what jfk aok said.
Games like GTA IV are scooping up 10s, despite falling far short of what next-gen can deliver. Look at the multiplayer in Burnout:Paradise. You shouldn't be able to get a 10 without doing as well as it did. And GTA IV, although similar, doesn't match up on that front.
Bioshock doesn't rate a 10 for me either. Not even close. It's a graphical update of System Shock 2. And people yammer about the characters and depth. The "writing" was mostly a collection of racial stereotypes and over-the-top accents. And it has no inventory screen! If you ever built items at the make your-own-item machine and had the result fall out onto the floor because you already had too much of that, then you know BioShock dropped the ball.
It is a beautiful game, the art direction makes it a winner too. But with ordinary game play, only about 7 types of enemies (counting the two types of big daddies, but not the Lawnmower Man boss at the end), it can't really make 10/10 status for me. I'm glad I played it though.
It's all going on hype right now. The reviewers are trying to top each other for superlatives instead of rating the actual games. And MGS isn't the only beneficiary of this.
Rask @ May 12th 2008 1:06PM
Congratulations to Kojima and Company.
May this be the first of many..
