Rumor: Microsoft's 'Lips' is an Xbox accessory

We've already blown the whistle on several new projects that may be announced at Microsoft's Gamer's Day tomorrow, with "Ninja Blade" and "Lips" being the most nebulous of the bunch. We still don't know what the former is, but 8Bit Joystick has shared a couple of thoughts on the latter matter. The site states that "Lips" is, in fact, the codename for a new Xbox peripheral, and speculates that it could be a voice input device (karaoke microphone?) or some method of in-game voice recognition.

For now, we'll go with, "Hmm, intriguing." Let's hope Microsoft drops the balm tomorrow and fills us in on these ... e-lips ...

Well, if it is indeed a voice recognition type peripheral, Sox dude, you totally just came up with a great idea for a new Opera videogame. It could be a game about being emotional, talking about feelings, and getting a good cry on. And the LIPS would pick it all up and turn it into meaninful gaming functionality.

I have always wanted Voice-Recognition software in a game. Well... The kind that actually works. It would be amazing to actually be able to tell characters what to do and be able to lead AI allies with the sound of your voice. I hope that's what this is. But, I bet it isn't.

I'd make my allies do backf-lips!

I'd love some voice recognition in games too (I always thought it would be awesome to be able to give marines instructions in Halo), I just don't see why Microsoft can't incorporate it using the headsets they bundle with every Xbox 360.

Every time I hear about this idea for Xbox, I immediately think of Fable 2. I think, "How great would it be to command the dog by saying 'Sit' or 'attack' or even whistle into the headset to call for him."

May be beyond the reach of the concept, but would be amazing nonetheless.

some xbox games had it....im pretty sure the ghost recon series has had voice recognition.

Umm...yeah Rainbow Six on the Xbox had voice recognition. It was decent, but nothing too spectacular.

If any sort of voice recognition is used, I'm assuming it's going to be more MS Sync like for use on the dashboard.

I'm looking forward to finding out what these b-lips on my radar are.

That would make so much more sense than a game named Lips. But what an unfortunately codename, as it would be easy to ridicule.

I wondered if Microsoft would ever bring their Sync technology to the 360. It would just make sense to offer it there.
