It's pretty easy to dismiss the Wii... but like any other console, it offers some great experiences you won't find elsewhere.

I could rehash the titles I enjoy, but there's no point. You've missed on experiences, but I'm sure I have as well.

In 76 weeks (the amount of weeks since the Wii was launched), it sold 25 millions compared to 13 millions PS2.

Almost at a double rate.

So Nintendo is back on top after losing marketshare with the N64 and Gamecube. All is good.

So its safe to say Nintendo will follow the same strategy with their future systems, the death of the Gameboy, their future handhelds having 2 touchscreens.

Wonder what Sony and Microsoft will do?

Its great to see that Nintendo has expanded the marketplace, they couldn't really fight against the hardcore market but have very well branched out to casual gamers, light gamers, and converted non-gamers into gamers.

Bravo Nintendo! : )

Agreed ... They have done a fantastic job getting mass appeal out of the Wii ... However, Universal Truth is not measured in mass appeal ... I wonder what the shelf life of the Wii will be ... Nintendo has done a killer job but it seems to a large extent (anecdotally on Joystiq anyway) other than the Nintendo diehards the Wii is looked down upon by most mature and hardcore gamers ... It seems the 360 has been able to get a niche in that young adult/college frat type of console where as the PS3 has done pretty well everywhere except America where it has been labeled a system for enthusiast ... It seems to have a better following in Europe than here in the states ... The Wii would sell great in Berma right now

Hmm, the PS3 isn't doing too great in the UK though. It's doing better in mainland Europe. But to be the flid fighting for 2nd place isn't good, in many European countries the PS3 and 360 are trailing way behind the Wii.

I always said this would happen. The Wii would take off and do phenomenally well but the fanboys from the other sides would dismiss it because it didn't carry their preferred games or genres.
For me it's no different to the PS2. Where I could only play 5-10 games on that I can now play about the same on the Wii (even though it's early into the Wii's life still).

I agree that flame wars are stupid, but should that stop Joystiq from posting stats/news and the like? I know pretty much any site will have flamebait/trolling, but I would rather have that than nothing at all.

Plus, it's kind of entertaining.

"Well jordan, at least the Wii has several first party titles with an average score above 90%

And the PS3 don't."

The point is why even bring up the PS3 in a Wii thread? You are trying to start a flame war. Its like the same stchik over and over again with you. I promise you the PS3 is a killer system with great software. If you don't like it thats fine but there is no reason to bring it up ALL THE TIME in threads where it has on validity.

Why do you think even Joystiq called you out for your rampant fanboyism. I have never seen the Stiq single out a single individual until they did so with you. Alas you were nowhere to be found.

Prepare to PAY UP on our GTA IV bet sucker!

Well but the point is why even bring up the PS3 at all ... Its just stupid ... He deserves to be called out for that garbage ... I mean Fernando is not as bad as Co is but he is different ... Co is the defender and Fernando seems to be the Offender ...

I mean I guess its true (haven't checked Metacritic for verification) but a game is not good or bad because it has a high metacritic average ... As I said before I played Mario Kart and Brawl and hated them both ... Brawl had some high praise and it was a pretty game to look at but not good at all IMO ... Mario Kart Wii is a sad excuse for a next gen game ... They improved the online component but the game just sucks ass so hard ...

I understand the appeal to the younger crowd and the diehards but even the biggest Wii fan knows its bad because it attempts to appeal to every Wii owner ... When you do that you alienate your core user base who actually moves most of the software outside of the shovelware ... There is just not much variety on the Wii ...

The thing makes a shit fuck ton of money and it has been able to bring people together which is wonderful ... It also innovated with a new control scheme which paid off big time ... If they would have just upped the specs a bit to have the ability to run the multiplatforms it would be a real success in my eyes ... It just falls short of all the hype and expectations I had for it ... I was happier than a pig and shit the day I bought my Wii ... Big letdown since ... Hopefully the new Kid Icarus will be a little more mature ... The concept art looks promising ...

I think it has succeeded in my household because it is something easy enough for my 6 year old twins and fiance to play without previous gaming experience

I don't think anyone would have thought it would still be hard to find in stores ... I figured a month or two after the frenzy wore down ... Still a frenzy

I think Fernando really wants a PS3. But the cognitive dissonance he would experience when plugging in the system and hearing the orchestra warm up for the first time would render him utterly insane (or more so). His negative reactions to all things PS3 is a manifestation of this latent desire.

Please Fernando, we are a supportive group. Confess your true love. We will not mock, nor tease, nor scold. We will welcome you with open arms, and when you are not looking give you a massive wedgie.

Rehashes aren't factored into metacritic's score, that's why the 4 or 5 90+s or w/e is there but reviewers may be starting to finally penalize them for it, mario kart wii being an example. All I want is for everything to be treated as equal. GT prologue and halo and madden etc shouldn't be penalized for rehashing if nintendo games aren't and vice versa.

I agree, Nintendo (but mostly 3rd party publishers) are not doing what they should with the Wii.

And about the rehash thing, as long as the games are good, no one is going to care it's a rehash. The only reason people care about Madden being a rehash is because all that changes are a few numbers and names. Halo was going to get burned anyway, if they changed too much or if they changed too little, it would all be the same.

Mario Kart is Mario Kart, it's fun for most of the family and always has been. It's not going to change much.

Also, Smash Bros. is the best fighting game period. Easy to pick up, you can't win by button mashing, you can basically pick how competitive the match is (items, levels, etc), Online, and all of your favorite characters. What more could you ask for?

@Raikage

I don't know man I thought Mario Kart and Brawl sucked hard. I admit I am not big into Nintendo folklore so it doesn't have the same effect on me as it does the diehards. I thought it was just an average, whacky, fast and zany fighter. There was nothing special there for me that had that wow factor to it.

I consider myself a fan of fighting games. My favorite fighting games of all time are Mortal Kombat II and Killer Instinct. To me Brawl is more of a racing game than a fighting game. On a lot of the levels its who can run up the level the fastest. I think if Brawl were more like Power Stone I would like. To say it is hands down the best fighting game is disgracing all the great fighting games. Its fan service through and through.

I never said there was not skill involved in the highest levels of Brawl and Mario Kart. There are people that partake in competitive cup stacking so certainly anything has skill level at the highest point. Its just easy to play and hard to master. Thats the extent of it in my eyes, well, that and the fan service. I think the new Street Fighter will easily blow brawl out of the water in terms of a pure fighter.

Mario Kart was a horrible attempt at fan service. They really messed up in trying to appeal to everyone who would play the game. The wheel is god awful and not effective. Who uses a wheel without an actual base?

These were two games that really dissapointed me. Especially considering the tremendous amount of hype both of them had (especially Brawl).

To each his own I say ... I will play Gran Turismo Prologue and you play mario kart ... Everybody wins!

(I told you I am making an effort ... albeit very bad)

To me, they are Smash Bros and Mario Kart. I know what to expect, just the same as you know what to expect with GT5 and Soul Cal and Street Fighter. If you don't like them, you don't like them. And their sequels are not going to sway you.

GT5 has about .3% chance of making me like GT, I don't like realistic racing games, (I suppose if I had a wheel and a seat it would be better.) I like more arcadey racers like Burnout and to a lesser extent MK and CTR (Crash Team Racing, man I wish they'd bring that back).

So what I'm getting at is it's ok to not like a franchise, but don't buy it when you KNOW what it is going to be and say it's a disappointment. I'm not gonna go out and buy a Final Fantasy game, and then tell people how much it sucks. Why? Because FF drives me up the wall, and I'm pretty sure none of those games will change that. And I understand that many many more people like FF than dislike it.

It's a thing called tact.

Also, THANK YOU for the paragraphs, I love reading all comments but some just... are hard... LOL

Bad thing about a product doing well is there is no improvement. Take the PS3, full of high hopes from Sony since they were on top form for the last 2 gens. But overconfidence fucked them over.

Now with Nintendo. They're on top. Why should they lower the consoles price? Why should they allow us to use SD cards as dynamic storage? They've got no reason to listen to us since the Wii has already sold twice as many PS2's in the same timeframe.

They slipped with the DS Lite's quality control (cracked hinges anyone?) but other than that they've built consoles that will survive armageddon. Wonder if they'll let this slip now?

But meh. Nintendo on top. All is well in the world.

Simple Economics; you lower the price when sales start to decline, why would you lower the price when it is selling just as strong as it was at launch? I can see you have no knowledge on this subject, so please don't try to act like you do in the future.

"They slipped with the DS Lite's quality control (cracked hinges anyone?)"
Oh, you mean that relatively minor hardware defect in only the first batches of the system? The PS2 also had hardware defects in both the first batches of the original design and the slimline ones.

"But meh. Nintendo on top. All is well in the world.

I agree, it's nice to see a pure video gaming company as global leader, not a corporation that just wants to rip the heart out of the industry and just turn Video Gaming to just another option on a Media Player.

What on earth? Of course you lower the price when it isn't selling. My point was they are selling plenty, they are on top of both markets which is why we haven't seen a price drop. The moment the PS3 or 360 start to sell more (lol!) we will see a price drop. We all know they're good for it since the 360 now costs £20 less (without HDD).

Discussing things isn't your strong point please don't act like you can in the future.

The thing with companies like Sony and Microsoft soft making game consoles is that I would say they have a lot more business sense than a game-only company like Nintendo. While I would say that Nintendo (and at one point, Sega) have more talented first party developers than Sega or Microsoft (not to say either have bad first party games, mind you), the business sense from these two corporations is (generally) more sound.
