Microsoft: 10m Xbox 360s sold in US, the 'first this generation' [update]
Microsoft has announced that Xbox 360 has become "the first current-generation gaming console" to break the 10 million threshold for units sold in the US. According to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier (via CNET), the Wii stands at 8.8 million and the PlayStation 3 at 4.1 million units sold.
Much as we did yesterday with Nintendo's announcement of having sold 6 million Wiis in Japan, let's break this number down. Assume the Xbox 360 hit 10 million as of midnight May 14, or 903 days since its November 22, 2005 launch.
Much as we did yesterday with Nintendo's announcement of having sold 6 million Wiis in Japan, let's break this number down. Assume the Xbox 360 hit 10 million as of midnight May 14, or 903 days since its November 22, 2005 launch.
- At a population of 301.4million, that's approximately 3.32% of all people in the US.
- Using the 903 metric, the Xbox 360 has therefore sold 11,074 per day, 461 per hour and 7.7 units per minute.

Well good for Microsoft. I certainly like the 360, I think it's great console with great games. Congrats.
PS. Think we could be mature and not have a giant flame war for no reason? kthxbai
Co @ May 14th 2008 6:01PM
hehehehehe...................... yeah right.
10 million in the US and 10 million EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD. Hmmmm..... yea let's keep the focus on America!!!
I guess you gotta find SOMETHING to boast about, Micorsoft!
Co @ May 14th 2008 6:09PM
haha! that has to be a record vote down
Vcize @ May 14th 2008 6:10PM
Yeah, shame on them for caring about being successful in by far the largest market out there for games.
Oh man, I feel like a cannibal now, arguing with a fellow Gator.
Deric Lee @ May 14th 2008 6:16PM
Yeah.......I'm pretty sure that US sales have the most impact on what happens in the US game market, which happens to be where I'm a gamer...hence this is good news for games and microsoft.
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 14th 2008 6:21PM
Goes to show you Co that 360 owners can get pissed off and bitchy just like PS3 owners. Read a neg comment and vote it the fuck down.
They think their better than PS3 fanboys but their just as bad.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 14th 2008 6:37PM
He was trolling, and unlike "other" people, "we" don't downgrade for the sake of downgrading, vide Fernando.
Benny @ May 14th 2008 7:11PM
Giantenemycrab... is your offline name Gandhi, by any chance?
giantenemycrab @ May 14th 2008 7:16PM
@Benny: no, my offline name is actually your online name, ironically enough.
Benny @ May 14th 2008 7:27PM
My offline name is your online name too. How weird!
Kristof @ May 14th 2008 5:58PM
Sort of interesting ... in a way. But the 360 has been out a year longer
dabamf @ May 14th 2008 6:16PM
Thank you for bringing this story back down to earth. I wonder if the 10 million includes RRoD replacements :oP
CJLopez @ May 15th 2008 1:06AM
They certainly does.
Whoever rate this down is clearly a pretty bad hurted fanboy/girl
NATO_Duke @ May 14th 2008 5:52PM
Ok, so this is where we see people go nuts and cry foul right? I'll just pull up a seat and watch the flames.
John McPoop @ May 14th 2008 7:16PM
LOL it looks like Co is on the warpath already ...
The total burn on the Wii was pretty funny by Microsoft PR ...
Update: GameDaily contacted Microsoft to remind them that the Wii is currently sitting at 25 million worldwide, to which they said, "we apologize for any confusion. Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen, high definition gaming console" (emphasis added).
George @ May 14th 2008 5:55PM
My only comment would be that the 360 had a year head start on the other two consoles, so you'd kind of expect them to be first to 10 million.
That being said, congrats to the Xbox
SpekOpz @ May 14th 2008 5:56PM
I'm just happy an American company is doing well in the videogame business. Nothing against Japan.
PojoMofo @ May 14th 2008 6:06PM
MS really isnt doing all that much actually. Sure its way popular in the states, but PS3 is quickly catching up in EU and is non-existant in JPN.
MS needs to be more of a global factor somehow, just not sure how they do that
cellulitis @ May 14th 2008 6:10PM
I second that. Keep up the good work MS :)
Hala Madrid!! @ May 14th 2008 6:27PM
@PojoMojo
"PS3 is quickly catching up in EU"
where did you get that info?
As far as i know the PS3 and 360 are at the same level of sales Here in Europe, get you numbers right buddy.
Greg2k @ May 14th 2008 8:16PM
¡HALA MADRID! 31!!!!
Well, the XBOX 360 is doing very well in the UK, but in most other countries in Europe, especially Spain, PS3 is dominating.
But nothing like the Wii, obviously. That's just insane.
deaftly @ May 14th 2008 5:56PM
USA! USA! USA!
xFenixKnightx @ May 14th 2008 6:47PM
OHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!!
w000000t!!!
Benny @ May 14th 2008 7:28PM
You understand that this is why the Japanese don't buy the 360...
xFenixKnightx @ May 14th 2008 9:07PM
who cares?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ May 14th 2008 10:07PM
wait do we still care what the japanese think of our games?
name123 @ May 14th 2008 10:47PM
Yeah! Fat-ass, lazy Americans, now getting fatter and stupider all thanks to Microsoft.
Watch as the US dollar dwindles to nothing because of the piece of shit, scumbag, hick labor force can't compete anymore!
teenagertc @ May 15th 2008 12:55AM
I hope you also realize that the dollar falls because small, well to do commodity traders but commodities such as oil, as a hedge against the falling dollar. The more traders that do that, the higher the price of oil, and a lot (but not all) the time, the dollar suffers...Also, if the European Central Bank doesn't raise their interest rates, it makes the Euro more attractive to traders, that also lowers the rate of the dollar...
Let's not always be so hasty to blame the sterotypical lazy american for the dollar's ills...a lot of it has to do with avarice...
reguy @ May 14th 2008 5:59PM
Thats good news.
Also if live in the US but dont own an xbox 360 you are a bad american
=)
syrik zero @ May 14th 2008 6:01PM
Hahahaha
Co @ May 14th 2008 6:03PM
LOL WTF?? That's like saying if you didn't vote for Bush you're a bad American.
Actually that's EXACTLY like saying that!
Makes me wonder what is more evil.... Bush or Microsoft?
PojoMofo @ May 14th 2008 6:04PM
what if you own one that got sent back twice, and then got a fried motherboard???
Superstar90 @ May 14th 2008 6:11PM
If you don't own an Xbox you are a commie pig!
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ May 14th 2008 9:57PM
damn. guess im a commie pig then. maybe i should paint my PS3 red...
PojoMofo @ May 14th 2008 6:02PM
Funny this comes out the day before NDP's!!!!!!!
Damage Control anyone?????
Benny @ May 14th 2008 7:14PM
Well it seems both Microsoft and Sony are looking to soften the blow in case things don't go their way.
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 14th 2008 6:03PM
Good job 360! I really hope I can pick you up later this year.
Or I might trade in my PS3, GTA4 is freezing on it and get a PS3 later....
: (
Kodros @ May 14th 2008 6:05PM
Why, so you can have GTA4 freeze on the 360 instead?
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 14th 2008 6:09PM
Isn't the freezing much less on the 360 version?
The freezing only started after I completed the first Little Jacob mission, Googled and found a couple of others having the exact same issue.
I installed the patch and the freezing was gone but its come back again.
I need my GTA........ : (
I hear Sony's coming with a firmware fix, get it out soon please!
SpekOpz @ May 14th 2008 6:13PM
@Kodros, I am 89% done with GTA on the 360 and have yet to experience any freezing problems.
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 3:07AM
I am 100% done with GTA4 and wondering why it got a score over 85%.
Jason @ May 14th 2008 6:06PM
Might take back your 360 w freezing GTA and get a PS3 later? Then why do you have your PSN ID in your name... and the 360 doesnt have problems with GTA freezing, the ps3 does ;)
Jason @ May 14th 2008 6:07PM
Oops, didn't read that right.. sorry! heh heh
SoulBlade @ May 14th 2008 6:07PM
Yea MS! Way to keep up your US sales lead after having a year head start on the competition! Let's throw a party!
10 mill is a great achievement, but do you really want to pat yourself on the back knowing you had such a jump on the competition and rushed your hardware out to get it?
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 14th 2008 6:10PM
I just wish they didn't have to kill the original Xbox so fast, but I guess they wanted everyone to quickly jump on the 360 wagon.
Co @ May 14th 2008 6:12PM
Soulblade,
Microsoft, by their own default, will never be the console leader. Never. It will not happen. They need to do something to make themselves feel good.
The power that the Playstation and Nintendo name brands hold OUTSIDE of Xbox's niche "hard core" gaming audience is insurmountable. Of course, on a website like this, my insight will be voted down.
PojoMofo @ May 14th 2008 6:17PM
@ Co
-1 for insight that makes sense. No place for that here
Knight Marquise @ May 14th 2008 6:19PM
@ Co...
No, your comments aren't voted down due to any perceived "insight"...but because your a fanbot and a fucktard about it to boot.
SoulBlade @ May 14th 2008 6:33PM
BAHAHA at the update. Oh MS... I'm the first to do something great if I add a shit ton of stipulations too. It would have been better to not say anything - their console is already really successful... but statements like this only make people find holes in it and laugh.
Vcize @ May 14th 2008 7:02PM
Co,
You could've said the same thing about Sony 10 years ago (vs. Sega and Nintendo) and that worked out just fine for them.
