Thing is, if you didnt say it was a thumb, I would mistake it as a wierd penis.
I suppose the ad worked though, its all over the net.

It didn't convince me to buy (or even consider to buy) a Sony product, so I'd say it failed, at least with me.

Yeah. I hadn't heard of the PS3 until someone forwarded me this ad. Now I want to buy one, but I don't live in Europe. Damn!

The US ads were pretty good actually. The Wii has had some decent ads here too, but the 360 seems to have had the worst and most scarce (again, in the US only). I guess that proves that advertising doesn't really work beyond just alerting consumers to what exists for purchase.

But I agree, advertisements in general do suck. I must say that I do like Europe's non-protestant ads containing nudity :) Just so long as it's not male nudity. I remember being overseas and flipping through a hardware store ad just out of sheer boredom, then seeing a totally naked woman showering. It was advertising shower heads or something... in all honestly I just remember thinking "boobies!"

No one ever mentions that this ad is only in Playboy.

Not that it makes it any less creepy.. but its at least not a slaughtered goat on display to the kiddies.

Uh... wow. I hope I don't get fired for looking at this at work. I don't want to have to explain to my boss that it's just a thumb!

Honestly - I am tired of this crap. If the system is so good, why don't they show some god damned games in their ads? (And not some creepy dude with a penis-thumb.)

Exactly my thought, back when gam systems actually had games to boast about, ads had games beign shown.

IMO this form of advertising is a sign of both a company in distress, and un-clever marketing.
They're hoping the controversial advertising does the same thing the one for PSP did!

However, now that they have sold a few million units of the machine AT A LOSS it would be wiser for them to advertise the games instead of showing this meaningless Bullcrap around.

When was this exactly? Because even Atari had Phil Hartman physically accousting a store clerk over a Hockey game...

For real? I remember SNES and NES games usually having art work portraying the game. Old Castlevania games come to mind. Even the PSX era of games used art work or photos as well.

What they're trying for is free advertising. Marketing and advertising firms try this stuff so that they can piggy-back on other media for free. A controversial ad will be feature on TV news, newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc.. This more than likely means that the advertising budget has either been cut or was already drastically low. they design controversial ads to get free coverage that will make up for the lack of paid coverage. It's a good strategy if done well, but this doesn't apply. This is just dumb.

It doesn't change the fact that it's still a stupid ad though. So I don't care if it is only in Playboy or any other 'adult' magazine.

It does not showcase the system in anyway, the system's games in anyway or even anything slightly video game related. It's disgusting in all honesty.

that's definitely brilliant advertising, but i wouldn't have realized it was a thumb either had it not been pointed out. it's not that i'm not totally cool with a picture of a nude dude...it's just that when i see one i don't generally closely analyze his package. maybe if it was more erect?

Apparently not.

Sony sold 9.24M PS3s in FY07. The best Microsoft could do was 8.9M at a much lower price.

Yeah, that's a massive gain on Microsoft, huh. They sold 0.3 million more! Wow! At this rate, the PS3 will have caught up to the PS3 when the PS6 comes out.

LOL at "much lower price."

STFU..of course that's a huge benefit to forming a controversial ad. The reason Sony sucks, in this instance, is that it's a horribly frivolous attempt at an advertisement.

Sony has the Playstation for games, so why not showcase some of what the product is actually intended for...

Umm..yeah..and generally the commercials I see for jeans and other clothing at least has clothed people in them. So now this ad has two things against it

No clothing...
No product..

Now, does this mean that Austria has a larger female or gay-male gamer population...becasue I would assume that normal reasoning would lead one to belive that a straight male would not be so "inclined" to buy a PS3 after seeing this ad - maybe a woman with thumbsticks for nipples (which is equally disturbing), but certainly not what this ad portrays.

Sony really needs some better marketing strategies.
