NSFW: Sony's Euro PS3 thumb for a penis ad
The image above is not the complete ad from Sony's European ad agency, TBWA\Wien, but we have placed the full monty (literally) after the break. When viewer's eyes wander south they will not be greeted by a penis, but by a well manicured thumb where a penis should be, which, believe it or not, is actually a thousand times more frightening.
Ads of the World posted this Austrian PS3 ad which continues to make us scratch our heads as to why Sony only fired TBWA from doing its American ads. As this blogger has received about 10 IMs in the last twenty minutes asking if I've seen the Sony Europe ad yet, one could say the piece is doing its job. Whether its doing the right job is a whole other debate.

Thing is, if you didnt say it was a thumb, I would mistake it as a wierd penis.
I suppose the ad worked though, its all over the net.
Henry @ May 14th 2008 11:13AM
PS. I wonder if he has penises for thumbs.
riggs @ May 14th 2008 11:43AM
accidental bj's while coughing, or orgy with himself?
Nick the Hero of Canton @ May 14th 2008 2:11PM
It didn't convince me to buy (or even consider to buy) a Sony product, so I'd say it failed, at least with me.
whiny bitch @ May 14th 2008 2:19PM
Yeah. I hadn't heard of the PS3 until someone forwarded me this ad. Now I want to buy one, but I don't live in Europe. Damn!
gob_bluth @ May 14th 2008 11:12AM
Well that's damn near the creepiest and most disgusting thing I've seen in a while! Thanks Joystiq!
Misfit Toy @ May 14th 2008 12:59PM
LOL
Limezor @ May 14th 2008 11:12AM
Sony's ads all suck.
copa @ May 14th 2008 11:30AM
Well, it got me to stop criticizing their "Lady Taking a Crap" ad.
Lars @ May 14th 2008 3:11PM
The US ads were pretty good actually. The Wii has had some decent ads here too, but the 360 seems to have had the worst and most scarce (again, in the US only). I guess that proves that advertising doesn't really work beyond just alerting consumers to what exists for purchase.
But I agree, advertisements in general do suck. I must say that I do like Europe's non-protestant ads containing nudity :) Just so long as it's not male nudity. I remember being overseas and flipping through a hardware store ad just out of sheer boredom, then seeing a totally naked woman showering. It was advertising shower heads or something... in all honestly I just remember thinking "boobies!"
humidfreak @ May 14th 2008 5:12PM
You joking sony have the best ads ever but this one gets a thumbs down
Ninjakamster (PSN: Chin-Poh) @ May 14th 2008 5:43PM
Not all, I'll agree MOST, but there's some good ones in the pile.
koehler83 @ May 14th 2008 11:14AM
No one ever mentions that this ad is only in Playboy.
Not that it makes it any less creepy.. but its at least not a slaughtered goat on display to the kiddies.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 14th 2008 12:52PM
Yeah but it's in the wrong kind of play magazine. I doubt most people are looking at playboy to see naked dudes in it.
Marty @ May 14th 2008 11:14AM
Uh... wow. I hope I don't get fired for looking at this at work. I don't want to have to explain to my boss that it's just a thumb!
Honestly - I am tired of this crap. If the system is so good, why don't they show some god damned games in their ads? (And not some creepy dude with a penis-thumb.)
gob_bluth @ May 14th 2008 11:21AM
I agree completely, but watch the language man
Mark @ May 14th 2008 11:22AM
Exactly my thought, back when gam systems actually had games to boast about, ads had games beign shown.
IMO this form of advertising is a sign of both a company in distress, and un-clever marketing.
They're hoping the controversial advertising does the same thing the one for PSP did!
However, now that they have sold a few million units of the machine AT A LOSS it would be wiser for them to advertise the games instead of showing this meaningless Bullcrap around.

"Exactly my thought, back when gam systems actually had games to boast about, ads had games beign shown."
When was this exactly? Because even Atari had Phil Hartman physically accousting a store clerk over a Hockey game...
DangerMouse @ May 14th 2008 1:11PM
"Exactly my thought, back when gam systems actually had games to boast about, ads had games beign shown."
For real? I remember SNES and NES games usually having art work portraying the game. Old Castlevania games come to mind. Even the PSX era of games used art work or photos as well.
Prof_Chaos @ May 14th 2008 2:53PM
"They're hoping the controversial advertising does the same thing the one for PSP did!"
What they're trying for is free advertising. Marketing and advertising firms try this stuff so that they can piggy-back on other media for free. A controversial ad will be feature on TV news, newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc.. This more than likely means that the advertising budget has either been cut or was already drastically low. they design controversial ads to get free coverage that will make up for the lack of paid coverage. It's a good strategy if done well, but this doesn't apply. This is just dumb.
DangerMouse @ May 14th 2008 11:15AM
Brings a whole new meaning to sucking your thumb.
Cahlito @ May 14th 2008 11:28AM
LMAO
that really laugh
Lone Starr @ May 14th 2008 1:13PM
In the same vein, I find it interesting the ad agency is TWBA\Wein. Should be TBWA\Weiner.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ May 15th 2008 3:26AM
"Suck my thumb."
"Pull my finger."
"THUMB WAR!"
j.howlett @ May 14th 2008 11:16AM
saw this yesterday and its still cracks me up
Austin @ May 14th 2008 11:22AM
This doesn't make me want to play games. This makes me embarrassed to own a playstation. Sony's ads suck thumb.
Jnas @ May 14th 2008 11:23AM
Well...they're not exactly gonna release this ads on billboards.
It's only for playboy.
el serpiente @ May 14th 2008 11:48AM
Notice how joystiq conveniently ignores this fact? It's meant for a mature audience within a mature magazine.
LaughingTarget @ May 14th 2008 12:00PM
Playboy is a magazine for men, why put a naked dude in a straight men/lesbian woman magazine?
StrangeBum @ May 14th 2008 12:05PM
It doesn't change the fact that it's still a stupid ad though. So I don't care if it is only in Playboy or any other 'adult' magazine.
It does not showcase the system in anyway, the system's games in anyway or even anything slightly video game related. It's disgusting in all honesty.
wertt @ May 14th 2008 11:24AM
that's definitely brilliant advertising, but i wouldn't have realized it was a thumb either had it not been pointed out. it's not that i'm not totally cool with a picture of a nude dude...it's just that when i see one i don't generally closely analyze his package. maybe if it was more erect?
Delgado @ May 14th 2008 11:35AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the one and only time you will see such weird posts as this one on Joystiq. Revel in that moment, and when you're older look back on this time with fondness, as you will never hear conversations such as this again. Ever.
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ May 14th 2008 12:09PM
WHAAAA?
Dude, its a thumb. Wee-man's dick is bigger than that (jackass2) If thats normal size for you, i feel 4 u man.
If your joking then, you got me.
Jawknee @ May 14th 2008 2:01PM
"[I]t's not that [I]'m not totally cool with a picture of a nude dude..."
(not gay)
seriously though, what on earth do you find 'brilliant' about this add?
Poisoned Al @ May 14th 2008 11:25AM
Fitting, seeing how Sony's marketing department are all dick-heads!
name123 @ May 14th 2008 12:16PM
Apparently not.
Sony sold 9.24M PS3s in FY07. The best Microsoft could do was 8.9M at a much lower price.
Kizzle @ May 14th 2008 1:49PM
Yeah, that's a massive gain on Microsoft, huh. They sold 0.3 million more! Wow! At this rate, the PS3 will have caught up to the PS3 when the PS6 comes out.
LOL at "much lower price."
A Guy @ May 14th 2008 7:33PM
Hey name123 - do you get paid by Sony per post or per hour to spin shit?
GearSecond! (a.k.a AwesomeStuff) @ May 16th 2008 6:28PM
Your avatar just made that comment all the more funnier. I salute you. xD
Zertoss @ May 14th 2008 11:26AM
Sony: Live in your world, play in ours... with your penis!
Sorry, I can't. I'm all dicks!
Tango Charlie @ May 14th 2008 11:30AM
Awesome Wii ad.
name123 @ May 14th 2008 11:31AM
Sony sucks.
An ad that everyone talks about after seeing? What are they thinking?
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ May 14th 2008 12:07PM
An add in Playboy, pure gold. Sony's marketing sucks, I mean, NO ONE talks about them hardly ever.
StrangeBum @ May 14th 2008 12:10PM
STFU..of course that's a huge benefit to forming a controversial ad. The reason Sony sucks, in this instance, is that it's a horribly frivolous attempt at an advertisement.
Sony has the Playstation for games, so why not showcase some of what the product is actually intended for...
Go White Sox and Go other Team @ May 14th 2008 12:23PM
So NO OTHER company does this right?
Have you seen a jeans commercial?
StrangeBum @ May 14th 2008 12:53PM
@ Whitesox
Umm..yeah..and generally the commercials I see for jeans and other clothing at least has clothed people in them. So now this ad has two things against it
No clothing...
No product..
XIII @ May 14th 2008 11:31AM
Now, does this mean that Austria has a larger female or gay-male gamer population...becasue I would assume that normal reasoning would lead one to belive that a straight male would not be so "inclined" to buy a PS3 after seeing this ad - maybe a woman with thumbsticks for nipples (which is equally disturbing), but certainly not what this ad portrays.
Sony really needs some better marketing strategies.
xFenixKnightx @ May 14th 2008 11:34AM
Its like killing 2 birds with one stone.
Fingering!
samfish @ May 14th 2008 11:42AM
Too bad he doesn't have Chun Li's thumb...he'd probably feel better about himself.

I give that add 1 thumb up!
