MGS4 'Gun Metal Gray' PS3 bundle exclusive to Konami website
While we've known for some time that the "Gun Metal Gray" PlayStation 3 bundle -- featuring a shiny 40GB model, a matching DualShock 3 controller and a Limited Edition copy of geriatric sneakfest, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots -- would be available to Americans, we didn't know until now that it would only be available to Americans logging onto Konami's website. Online and inevitably scarce pre-orders for the $599.99 package will start on May 19th, so you'd better get clicking if you want Snake and Gray Box to face off in your living room.
No, we mean it. Judging by Konami's labyrinthine sign-up process for the Metal Gear Online Beta, you'll need at least several days to prepare a registration, obtain an ID, convert that into e-currency, trade it in for the microfilm, enter the password, steal the key code, write the secret URL on a postcard and summon Hideo Kojima in an arcane ritual.
Note: This bundle is different from the regular, $499 MGS4 bundle which includes an 80GB PS3 and a DualShock 3.

Gray Box... I see what you did there.
But, $600? For a 40GB?!
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 4:08PM
It's an 80GB.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ May 15th 2008 4:11PM
Nay, for the gigabytes number 40. Doth sayeth Konami...eth.
Talryyn @ May 15th 2008 4:12PM
Even still, insert 80gb??!! In this day and age MS and Sony need to come to terms with the HDD prices.
BPM [SSBB: 5026 4120 1186] @ May 15th 2008 4:13PM
Says right in the article it's a 40Gig.
BPM [SSBB: 5026 4120 1186] @ May 15th 2008 4:14PM
More important than the harddrive size is the fact this is a 40GB model, you won't be able to play MGS2 and MGS3 on it.
Zertoss @ May 15th 2008 4:14PM
40 gigglebites means no PS2 compatibility I guess.
Also, BPM's avatar never fails to make me grin like an idiot.
Arttemis @ May 15th 2008 4:22PM
Wow, I will NOT be purchasing that. I was heavily considering it at $600... but it's only a 40GB model!?
That's ridiculous. A limited edition MGS version of a console that's had its ability to play its PS2 counterparts REMOVED is not something I'd spend an extra $200 for.
I will enjoy the regular MGS4 PS3 bundle, though.
Mmm, backwards compatibility (if only it had the EE chips though).
Zertoss @ May 15th 2008 4:29PM
This isn't related to this article, but Ludwig's reply reminded me of it:

Well, someone could be flipping burgers and 3.30 could mean be alot. It's actually quite possible even if your not flipping burgers a 3.30/ month is alot. Just because you don't doesn't mean everyone does.
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 5:28PM
Oops, got it mixed up with the other bundle. Flame away!
Ace b @ May 16th 2008 12:09AM
Ok....Someone wanna explain to me why all the gamestops I have gone to (All 6 of them) have all said that the gunmetal grey will be coming to their store?
This cant be right....
NATO_Duke @ May 16th 2008 9:48AM
Doesn't it get old kissing Sony's ass over everything and flaming the other companies? Did you get a toaster or a t-shirt?
Now, I understand your hidden cost argument you prick, so save the high and mighty bs. People can call your great love out on costs too - why the hell do they not include DS3's with the PS3's still? 1 reason - to milk you. You won't admit it, because god forbid Sony acts like a business too, yet the fact is that they are milking owners into paying the extra $55 to get the rumble. There are added costs for every perk to the gaming experience – whether it be Sony, MS or Nintendo. One person’s light-gun perk is another persons MP perk.
And in case you didn't get it from earlier in my post - you’re a jackass.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ May 16th 2008 12:50PM
Why is everyone replying to my post for some other discussion? :V
deaftly @ May 15th 2008 4:08PM
RIP OFF.
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 4:10PM
Well, it is a limited edition. You do pay a premium for that.
robert @ May 15th 2008 4:13PM
like the H3 360?
name123 @ May 15th 2008 4:15PM
Still cheaper than the Xbox 360 installment plan known as XBL.
Talryyn @ May 15th 2008 4:23PM
How is $3.30 a month still a valid flame point?
xFenixKnightx @ May 15th 2008 4:25PM
Talryyn
Dont ask namePS3 a question, he never answers. He's just an automatic flame machine.
LubaLub @ May 15th 2008 4:30PM
Yea, LIVE is only a hair over $3.00 a month especially if you get if off amazon (free shipping and no tax). What's the deal with everyone hating on LIVE and having to pay for it? I guess if you flip burgers, $3.00 is a lot to you. Dude, it's $3.00. I just made $3.00 typing this.
Knight Marquise @ May 15th 2008 4:31PM
I'm not impressed.
Now show me a limited edition FF 120gb PS3, and I'll pick up 4 of them for the family. The only game I'll buy PS3's.
NATO_Duke @ May 15th 2008 4:48PM
LubaLub, you must have forgot that Name doesn't think when he comments here.
He just spews hate for anyone but Sony and gimps back to his basement.
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 5:31PM
Let's say, for arguments sake, you have your xbox for 4 years.
$50 x 4 =$200.
Now tack that on to the price of the console and let's see if you are still smug.
NATO_Duke @ May 15th 2008 6:18PM
el serpiente please give up on that old argument. It hasn't done anything to make the masses scrap 360's for other consoles.
"Oh look, some guy on joystiq says its $50 for live and then called everyone xbots, I better sell my 360 and get a PS3 quick!"
-Yeah, happens everyday I'm sure.
People who pay for live seem happy generally, so I don't see what you think you'll get by making it such an issue.
el serpiente @ May 15th 2008 7:29PM
Look up.
There's 'the point' flying over your head.
My point is, is that there are hidden costs to the xbox experience. I'm not trying to get anyone to throw away their xboxes. Nice strawman argument NATO. It was to refute the whiners who say that the PS3 is much more expensive than the Xbox. It isn't, when you don't look at the total cost of ownership.
LameDuck @ May 15th 2008 11:48PM
Hidden cost? You've been drinking too much SDF koolaid.
Not every needs XBL. Not everyone needs wireless. No one needs HD-DVD and never did since you can get HD from the XBL Market place. I still contend that you get what you pay for. I play on PSN and thing it is a pile of crap. It feels tacked on, I don't like the ideal of Sony controlling my games servers, and I still don't believe the "free forever" line. Why? Because money for R&D has to come from somewhere. I can't see Sony footing the bill for online forever. Also, having another area where they are bleeding money isn't going to help them get into the green anytime soon since, ya know, servers arn't free.
But hey, lets add all that crap to the Xbox, fool ourselves into thinking it's needed, and stroke are egos while we laugh at the "inferior product."
el serpiente @ May 16th 2008 1:24AM
I see lameduck also has lameargument.
>Not every(body) needs XBL.
If you want to play multiplayer games, which in this day in age is ubiquitous, yes you do.
>Not everyone needs wireless.
Should someone who wants it pay $99? No.
>No one needs HD-DVD and never did since you can get HD from the XBL Market place.
Yeah, good luck downloading high quality 20GB video files. I'll see you in a week or two. And good luck finding everything you want on xbox live. Unless you are a big Hannah Montana fan...
>I don't like the ideal of Sony controlling my games servers
Yeah, dedicated servers suck. I prefer actually paying money for laggy and unreliable peer to peer.
>I can't see Sony footing the bill for online forever.
It's built into the cost of the product. Do you really think a massive corporation like Sony hasn't worked out the business case for a free online service? It's called adding value to a product to sell at a higher price. Xbox doesn't build in this cost and bills you for it afterwards.
Really, that was too easy.
NATO_Duke @ May 15th 2008 4:09PM
I like it. Too bad I dont need a new one yet.
Talryyn @ May 15th 2008 4:10PM
Wow, is that really the price?
Let me check that version off my list, that will get me too much wife aggro.
Mez Jr @ May 15th 2008 5:05PM
oh yes... wife aggro. Awesome.
PojoMofo @ May 15th 2008 5:19PM
usually wife aggro is a very very bad thing... until you learn to harness that power into something "useful" :)
Jesse @ May 15th 2008 4:10PM
I don't really care for this exclusive package. I am though going to get the 80GB package for $500 bucks.
kip (SSBB:3437-2813-1377) @ May 16th 2008 11:02AM
I plan to get the $400 non-bundled system, plus the $60 game, and save $40. Am I the only one?
Booxatron @ May 16th 2008 11:19AM
Well if you want the DS3 too, then you save about $10 with the bundle.
Roders @ May 15th 2008 4:12PM
Is there still a $500 bundle? Or did I just misread that story?
Ludwig Kietzmann @ May 15th 2008 4:51PM
That one's still coming. I've updated the post to note that this limited edition bundle is a separate thing.
Roders @ May 15th 2008 5:42PM
Thanks for the clarification, I was getting worried there for a minute!
Frostybolts @ May 15th 2008 6:10PM
Well, the other bundle is still mentioned on Sony's website..
http://www.us.playstation.com/News/PressReleases/455
"To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal
Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will
introduce a PS3 bundle, which will includean 80GB PS3, the upcoming
blockbuster Metal Gear Solid®4: Guns of the Patriots and a DUALSHOCK
3 wireless controller for $499 (MSRP)."
The question is: Will Sony change this so they don't step on Konami's
toes? (Man, I hope not..)
Jared @ May 15th 2008 4:19PM
Gray Box could just be Decoy Octopus...
Mookie @ May 15th 2008 4:22PM
That sounds like a World of Warcraft quest at the end there....
xFenixKnightx @ May 15th 2008 4:23PM
Its aight, good for the diehards out there I guess. The glossy black and all white are still my favs.
jorojoserojas @ May 16th 2008 3:30AM
The glossy black looks damn sexy.
I may play my PS3 the least of all my consoles, but that is one damn fine lookin' machine.
rodsky @ May 15th 2008 4:25PM
I wonder if they were like oh hey lots of people are getting $600 from the govt we should price it at that so they blow it all on this thing
JC @ May 15th 2008 4:26PM
Ahh...and I thought I'd finally get a PS3. I really wanted this to be it. Joystiq had previously reported that this would be an 80gb model (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/steel-a-proper-glance-at-mgs4-ps3-bundle/) but 599 for a 40gb...yeah, limited edition and the game, thanks but no. Thanks.
browntown @ May 15th 2008 4:35PM
Theres a normal bundle with 80 gig and mgs4 for 500, u should look into that
foxdie @ May 15th 2008 5:39PM
I dont see where they stated this was going to be a 80gb, i clearly see them saying 40gb.
browntown @ May 15th 2008 4:32PM
I looks sweet, pretty expensive, but then again its very limited and for the hardcore fans. If i had the money, i would buy it, its looks sweet.
JC Wonder @ May 15th 2008 4:39PM
Yeah, you're right. I guess I had already made up my mind about it and the color looks incredible. But it's all good in the hood!
