DualShock 3 shakes down US for $10.9 million in April
Apparently, rumble does matter to a lot of Americans. According to SCEA, the feedback-giving DualShock 3 had $10.9 million in sales during the month of April, meaning that about 200,000 Americans were ready to put down $55 for some vibration from their PS3 controller.
As we learned from our initial impression of the DualShock 3: Yes, it's worth it. We do know that the Sixaxis is on its way out, but at this point only the MGS bundles come with the DS3. We're still waiting for the "official" changeover to occur with regular PS3 consoles.

umm....hello??? @ May 16th 2008 9:15AM
thanks for listening to your audience for once, Sony. rumble for my old PS2 games!!!!
whistlepig @ May 16th 2008 9:15AM
the rumble feature is cool and all but for me i havent really missed it
Phranctoast @ May 16th 2008 10:03AM
I agree. There are few games I really care for with rumble.
I liked the way Shadow of the Colossus utilized it.
Twisted Metal Black was good for the turbo. That way you knew you were out when it didn't rumble and you no longer had to look at the screen to find out (theres enough things to pay attention to)....
Brucie B @ May 16th 2008 9:17AM
RIP OFF, Thanks again Sony!
Slayer @ May 16th 2008 9:22AM
That doesn't even make sense. It's more of an option than a ripoff. I you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that.
SoulBlade @ May 16th 2008 9:26AM
Slayer, people would rather bitch about stupid shit than actually use their brain most of the time. It's easier and makes them seem cooler.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 9:38AM
It's a ripoff in a sense that it should have came out just like this in the first place...ya know, in the box. The numbers prove it, people wanted rumble but of course here on the Stiq we get the people saying "ahh I dont need it that much". Well, $10.9 million means people DID need it. =O
j.howlett @ May 16th 2008 10:03AM
i missed it so i got one, but i knew it was coming so its only my second controller. i understood about the lawsuit wich i think is why nintendo stopped making wavebirds because of that lawsuit. i ber after its all settled nintendo comes out with wiibirds that don't need the dongle thing.
ViagraFiend @ May 16th 2008 1:35PM
Yeah, but Fenix, that doesn't mean its a rip off. It was definitely a dumb move on Sony's part to not pay immersion so that the PS3 could have rumble, but a rip off would mean that the controller doesnt do what its supposed to or perform up to its potential. I think it does exactly what it claims. Therefore, its worth every penny.
Brucie B @ May 16th 2008 2:22PM
LOL, Easy Fanboys...
That's why I also waited to buy a 2nd controller.
It's still a Rip Off FOOLS, Look how much extra $$$ there going to make off of something that should of came with the system!
Ohhh right, you fanboys don't care you Finally have rumble now.
Brucie B @ May 16th 2008 2:26PM
Ohhh By the way, Yes there Ripping me off! lol
If not for this, Then for my P-O-S Sony 60 HDTV That's a Pixel haven.
Slayer @ May 16th 2008 9:23AM
Are they removing SIXAXIS completely or are they adding it with the rumble? I'm confused.
Hyams @ May 16th 2008 9:33AM
The DS3 still has the motion sensing stuff inside it. Basically, it's a SIXAXIS controller, plus rumble.
Hashbrown Hunter @ May 16th 2008 10:43AM
Sixaxis out, DS3 in. That's it.
Nigeria @ May 16th 2008 9:26AM
I hope with the next Playstation Sony actually go ahead with a new controller. Sometimes people don't know what they want until it's right in front of them. I actually liked the look of the boomerang.
The dualshock is a bit, meh. It's been ten years, man, and they still haven't fixed the glaring flaws; mainly the crippled d-pad and awkward thumb placement.
marauder800 @ May 16th 2008 10:33AM
I agree that the PS controller layout is outdated and in need of a makeover, but don't diss the D-pad. It's 110% better than the 360's. If you could drop a PS3 d-pad in a 360 controller you'd have the perfect gaming accessory.
Nigeria @ May 16th 2008 10:52AM
The 360 d-pad is awful as well. In fact, this generation, like the last, has been horrible to the d-pad, and that's a shame seeing as fighting games are my favourite genre.
In my opinion - excluding the classic controller, which sorta counts - there hasn't been a good d-pad since the Sega Saturn. 1995!
Burnt Meatloaf @ May 17th 2008 6:12AM
The best D-pad was on the 8-bit NES controller. The Playstation's D-pad is pretty respectable.
I always hated the "swivel" style D-pads that Sega started using and have since been adapted on almost every console since the Playstation, and is used to particularly bad effect on the 360. The MadCatz controller I bought for $10 is, amazingly, a massive improvement from Microsoft's controller, and that says a lot. I don't know why game companies think it's vital to mount the cover plate so high off the PCB.
The Jaguar didn't use the swivel style d-pad, but of course that controller had its own trademarked formula of suckage.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 9:27AM
MAAAAJOR RIPOFF, but atleast they fixed it so kudos for that. Now, imagine if they changed the analog and d-pad out and made it a little larger? Thats millions more right there Sony!
Oh and b4 all the "but I like the analogs right next to each other" come and defend it. Just shutty, everybody (thats tried it long enough) knows that overall its better to have it laid out just like the 360/Gamecubes.
DiRT @ May 16th 2008 10:00AM
Or not. Putting the left stick higher sucks. They can change the shape a little, but I don't want an unbalanced controller because of it.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 10:05AM
Thats funny because the controller you have is actually the unbalanced one.
Dude, did you not read my post? Oh well whatever.
Hashbrown Hunter @ May 16th 2008 10:45AM
Actually I think it all comes down to preference. Personally I like DualShock's design more than the 360 Controller's design.
na2ru1 @ May 16th 2008 11:00AM
if the 360 pad has its left analogue placed higher, why is it ok to have the right analogue lower?
the 360 analogues are just too damn stiff and unsensitive to get an accurate shot.
ok the ps3s have problems too. the triggers and the analogues get less grippy.
until BOTH 360 analogues are placed high, i dont see a reason to bash the PS3s control
NATO_Duke @ May 16th 2008 11:26AM
The reason to bash the PS3 control is mostly its weight and the triggers to me. Maybe its my hand size, but those triggers are just too damn uncomfortable.
ViagraFiend @ May 16th 2008 1:38PM
I agree with Hashbrown Hunter
Maverick Saturn @ May 16th 2008 9:29AM
Whoa, who knew rumble was so important :S
As for me, I don't mind waiting for a bit, not in any rush.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 16th 2008 9:30AM
I consider rumble almost as big a gimmick as waggle, so $55 for this is pretty laughable. They should let us trade in those retarded sixaxis controllers for one of those, since they were the ones who screwed all of the ps3 owners over.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ May 16th 2008 9:37AM
You don't even HAVE a PS3. This is like if I started bitching about what Nokia should do about the N-Gage...
tmacairjordan87 @ May 16th 2008 9:41AM
It's kinda funny that you're so sure I don't have a ps3, because last I knew you haven't been to my house, or know me (or maybe you do, never know anymore). But if you want you can send me a friend request on PSN, same name as this joystiq one, to find out.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 9:43AM
PWNED!
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 9:44AM
I'll send ya one Tmac.
PojoMofo @ May 16th 2008 9:44AM
I am throughly pissed off at Gizmondos shitty d-pad
sorry, I just wanted to rant as well :)
tmacairjordan87 @ May 16th 2008 9:47AM
Ok I'll get it later fenix, I'm at class now. My priorities are pretty bad, I know. Can't talk on it yet cause I don't have a headset at the moment, mostly cause I haven't played a whole lot of ps3 games online, but I'll probably have one by the time MGS comes out for MGO.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ May 16th 2008 10:36AM
Fenix, man.. you need to start sending me messages on what games you want to play. I'll be playing Rock Band and I'll see you log in and then immediately log out.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 11:02AM
It's my stupid connection. I'll get a "you have been signed out of the Playstation Network" message all the time. It's annoying and I've done everything. I've checked my connection settings and my signal strength is great so I dont know wtf is happening.
Once I get online in to matches like in COD4 it doesn't diconnect but if I'm just browsing through my menus it will sign me out so I stay offline and play games offline. Did you ever get COD4? Let me know so I can show you a thing or two. lol
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ May 16th 2008 11:10AM
I snagged COD4, didn't care much for the multiplayer but that could just be because I enjoy vehicle based shooters ala Warhawk/Battlefield. I can give it another go from time to time.
Do you have your news ticker active? I know that was my issue many moons ago.
KingOfGods @ May 16th 2008 11:17AM
Fenix it's a very easy fix. I had the same issue and it pissed me off. I will send you the info over Live.
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 11:58AM
King of Gods
Cool, yeah man hook me up. It's annoying as fuck!
Fiddy
Lets do this brotha.
ThePremierAssassin @ May 16th 2008 9:45AM
But I thought rumble was last gen sony?
chez @ May 16th 2008 10:14AM
I recall someone from Sony saying that too...
/rank
PojoMofo @ May 16th 2008 9:46AM
I havent picked one up yet. Every time I think I am going to, I just think "man, for 5 more bucks, I could have a brand new game"
PojoMofo @ May 16th 2008 9:47AM
They should just make it $60 and pack in a few minigames with it. that way the could be in the NDP software numbers every month
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 9:55AM
You mean, like Wii Play?!!
PojoMofo @ May 16th 2008 10:06AM
figure that out all by yourself there Fenix
xFenixKnightx @ May 16th 2008 10:09AM
Dude, I thought you were gonna play along. Like poking fun at Wii Play. Wait, I forget are you part of SDF or NDF? *sigh
PojoMofo @ May 16th 2008 10:22AM
I was just messing with you, but yes I was definitely poking fun at Wii Play.
Card carrying Member of the SDF. Only console this gen that I can find in a store and it wont crap out on me
Martez @ May 16th 2008 11:22AM
As a PS3 owner with a crapped-out console, I take issue with that statement.
Van Faulk @ May 16th 2008 11:57AM
Yeah, So do I.
A 500 dollar machine should not start losing its faculties one by one after 3 months.
Burnt Meatloaf @ May 17th 2008 6:28AM
Yeah, because, you know, the competition has *really* been destroying Sony in terms of reliability.
Even the insanely high-profit and conservatively designed Wii has been having overheating and disc read errors -- the best of both worlds from the 360 and the PS2. Love it or hate it, the PS3 is built like a tank.
chez @ May 16th 2008 9:47AM
So it turns out rumble was important after all.
