It's a good thing that Microsoft got its gloating in about selling 10 million units in the US, because the Wii will not only hit that number, but probably surpass it this month. Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel did the math and found that the Wii currently sits at about 9.5 million units in the US. If Nintendo's console sells another 700k units (like it has been) this month and the Xbox 360 sticks to its 200k level, the Wii will blow right past its competition's US install base.
It'll also be interesting to see the impact Wii Fit has on the numbers when it launches next week. Microsoft can take solace in knowing that it can always fall back on saying the Xbox 360 still has the "largest global install base of any current gen, high definition gaming console" ... right?

Not really, because Nintendo still makes a fortune off of software. So it's like a win/WIN situation.

My real life friends dont come over for games anymore (too old maybe?). The wii is completely useless to me. I need online to get my multiplayer game on, and the 360 seems to do that best. Also the little things with the wii bother me, like no HD support when I spent a boat load of cash on a sweet HDTV, and the motion controls. I just dont find them fun at all. Maybe if they actually used motion I would, but replacing button press with arm movement does not = more fun to me.

Hi Mike the pirate. Stole any good games off torrent sites recently?
I find motion more fun. Tried playing TP on the Gamecube and it just wasn't as satisfying as actually swishing (even without 1:1) the sword around to kill enemies. Oh and Mario Kart Wii is a lot more fun with the wheel than a controller. Gives it an arcade flavour.
And yey! Slag the Wii because you bought a big expensive TV! So did I a few weeks back, and with component sat back on my sofa I'm hard pushed to see much difference between it and PS3/360 games (without the big mofo effects of course, and up close its a different matter entirely). You know I'm going to hate electric cars just for the reason that I bought a petrol one...

Wow. So, in a month, Nintendo will have won this generation's console war. It didn't even take them two years.
I think MS still has a chance to come back. They just need to squeeze out a new Halo game every 6 months.
