To all the people who say that people are just being weak and pussies and that people shouldn't be so sensitive when being called fat, let me ask you this: Do you act any different when people call you guys jackasses? I'm sure when people call you a jackass for calling them fat, you start acting like a like a pussy and getting defensive.

Let me tell you something, calling someone a fatass isn't exactly helpful, you're only making it worse. Calling them that won't make them exercise any more then calling you a jackass would make you not one.

I actually am overweight (5'7", male, ~200lbs.), but doesn't mean I think it's okay. It isn't healthy for me to be like this, but I had been in worse shape (used to weigh as much as 232lbs.). So I decided to stop whining about it, and actually do something, so I could lose weight.

Wow, you make a convincing point.... actually no, you don't. Look, I'll put it this way. I have a wallet chain. Actually three chains, it jingles, jangles wherever I go. I catch shit all the time for having the chains. I can choose to get rid of the chains and be allowed into more rock shows without having to take my chains off all the time. I can even avoid the insults that I get. But I like my chains, I keep them and the trouble that arrises from them by my own choice. Should people insult my chains, I don't get upset, who cares? We are all unique.

What bearing does this have? I used to be fat. Like badly so, even had a few kidney stones (which thanks to HMO doctors laziness, they identified the first as diet problems when it was really lack of fluids). Started having weakness of the legs. And so I began exercising. Being called a fatass didn't really sting because I knew the issue existed. Worked to improve myself. Do I feel better about myself now that I'm average size? Not really. Because I knew the problem and solved the problem. Did the insults hurt? Once again, not really.

Am I immune? I am, after all, an asshole by my own admission. It's not that I intentionally began this way, just been put down damn near my entire like and because of having no easy victories and so little "filtering" from reality, I find I'm a bit tougher of a person through and through. This also means I can be a bit abrassive because comments that wouldn't damage me have a way of cutting others to the quick. Ironically they can be just as nasty as I am, they just don't like it cutting right back.

So once again, I advocate developing a sense of self-worth and a giant "FUCK YOU" to anyone who disagrees with that worth. Human nature is animalistic and pretending that doesn't exist is what leads to a 13 year old girl offing herself because of some mean comments left on her Myspace.

You know, even if they girl isn't really fat, the fact that she freaked out when a game told her so says loads about her blossoming self esteem. She's doomed to be an anorexic. On a side note, I'm sick of this new attitude people are getting that's like, "Don't pick on anyone! Let's all be nice!" The world isn't nice and the more you sugar coat it for a young person, the more they're gonna be disappointed when they meet the real world. As for that law about abuse on the internet, when does accountability come into play? It was the kid's choice to hang themselves. If they did it because someone online told them to, well good riddance because they obviously aren't too bright. I read some where" When we started caling retards people, we killed natural selection." It's mean, but it's true.

maybe you didn't realize, but it's the "real world" that is setting all these new guidelines and laws. Though I don't agree with them either.

I guess we need new regional coding for games. If you're from an area that's morbidly obese on the whole, we'll just label you "solidly built." For those in skinny country, you get the "fatass" designation. Pussy country gets a "you weigh something" for every body type.

Wow, I guess I was unaware that such a large percentage of the people commenting here were either:

A) So physically fit that an ounce of body fat drives them into a fit of posting rage.

B) Bitter supporters of eugenics.

C) Your basic, intolerant dick.

Silly me.

People on the Internet generally, by nature, are dicks. For these people, they see the anonymity the Internet provides as a layer of protection to be used to fling insults without repercussion.

Exactly what i mean. People keep using the BMI scale as the be-all and end-all of determining health, when it is very flawed in and of itself

It's not like i oppose the movement to get America moving, but i feel that too much emphasis is placed on weight-based health and the BMI scale, ignoring other aspects of what makes a person healthy

What amuses me is how much authority people instill in the f'n video game. All the parents had to do is tell the girl that the machine is wrong and she should ignore that part of the game.

No, you need to make an election issue out of it and pass a constitutional amendment and sue Ninty for emotional disturbance

niko, please

In all fairness, if a kid's fat, I'm pretty sure that Wii Fit isn't going to be the first one to tell them so.

Nor does Wii Fit use the term "fat", as far as I know: Depending on your BMI, it either calls you underweight, ideal, overweight, or obese.

So forgetting for the moment that "overweight" and "obese" are synonyms/euphemisms for "fat", I think people are really overreacting to this.

Stop the goddamn presses!

(I just weighed myself and computed my BMI. 6', 173 lbs, 23.5 BMI. I'm relatively normal)

Having just read the linked article it states that the girl is 4 ft. 9 inches tall and weighs 6 stone (84 pounds) running this through a BMI calculator gives the result of 18.2. That is underweight according to BMI classification.

What am I missing here? Are the figures supplied to the Daily Mail wrong? Does Wii Fit have a fatal bug which causes 'underweight' to be displayed as 'fat'. Did the 10 year old accidentally input her height incorrectly?

I don't think Nintendo would make such an enormous cock up as to label 'underweight' people as 'fat' in their software.

Yeah. This comes from the Daily Mail. You may remember that a UK paper not long ago was found looking for people to talk about how games turned them to crime:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/02/british-paper-paying-for-game-violence-stories/

http://www.starnow.co.uk/Magazines-newspapers/computer_games_life_of_crime_stories_wanted.htm

Many believed this to be the very same Daily Mail although that can't be confirmed. The daily Mail was also responsible for this piece of brilliance, including one of the worst photoshops I have ever seen (note the original article is now gone):

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/uk-tv-presenter-delivers-chilling-verdict-on-violent-games/

I'll let y'all draw your own conclusions.

Alot of fatties us that "muscle weighs more than fat" excuse. If her self esteem is hurt because a game tells her she's a fat-ass, then she better toughen up cuz' the real world is going eat her alive. I just hope they don't choke on her and die.

You know, I was reading the story, and something doesn't add up. According to the story, the game took in her height and weight and labeled her as fat based on her BMI. The thing is, at 4'9" and 84lbs, it puts her BMI at ~18.17, which is underweight. Either the game isn't calculating right, or whoever initially reported this didn't get their facts straight. Does anyone know who first reported this story?

Yeah Fidious, the US is turning into one giant gaping vagina.
People are too sensitive and poltical corectness has spun out of control, hell evey other day we read about some school baning dodgeball or basketball or some crap like that, and we wonder why the kids are getting fat.

I think Manhunt(the actual hide and seek style game, not the violent video game) should be a class by itself, have the little kids run around for an hour and a half each day that will get them into shape.
Oh but that would be banned too...

I just posted a HUGE rant about this over at Kotaku. First off Nintendo does not have to apologize for people being the way they are and telling the truth. BMI is not that accurate and people should not take Wii Fit to heart. I dont even want Wii fit, I just want the balance board for future games coming out. I bet the new Tony Hawk would use this and so would a new 1080 snowboarding game. Bottom line is people are too sensitive and Nintendo has noting to be sorry for. I love you Nintendo and you do not need to apologize to me.

ok so this whole thing is ridiculous. i actually think this is kind of a good thing its good training for kids to learn not to take everything so freakin seriously. everyone always takes everything to heart but a lot of stuff you just gotta let roll off your shoulders. people care what everyone else thinks of them way too much its time we all just stopped caring.
