Metal Gear Retrospective: Part Two sneaks into the PS1 era
The second installment of the Metal Gear Retrospective from the masters of recollection over at GameTrailers recently dropped, bringing with it a flood of joyous, espionage-flavored memories from our youth. The games featured in this edition are centered around Kojima's only exploit on Sony's seminal home console, Metal Gear Solid -- that includes the GameCube remake, and the bizarre VR Missions standalone game. Pull up a chair, plug the controller into the second port, and let the warm waves of nostalgia wash over you as you relive the events that transpired at Shadow Moses.

Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 was IMO the best game created to this date. What can I say I love the series.
Kizzle @ May 18th 2008 3:29PM
MGS1 was my final game in the series...although I do have MGS2 on the XBox, I think it's still in the shrinkwrap.
Maybe I'll get around to the others someday. The original Metal Gear is still my favorite 8 bit game, be it on MSX or NES.
Mromson @ May 18th 2008 4:13PM
The Metal Gear Solid is better than Sex! Well, almost better than sex. :P

MGS 1 was the (controversial bit coming up) only good MGS.
No. 2 was ruined by Raiden, but still ok, No. 3 was...I think it felt too, green foggy. 4 looks ok again, but nothing groundbreaking.
Fvourite game ever though has to be Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy on Xbox and PS2.

Just finished replaying this yesterday, and it's still pretty good despite the aging graphics and aim system. Currently playing 2, which is my series favorite so far even though raiden's kind of a pussy.
Raikage (LDF CRAB BATTLE!!!) @ May 18th 2008 5:01PM
I'm playing through 2 for the first time (just got to that part where Fortune shoots at you for a while).
I started my Metal Gear playing with the Twin Snakes on the GC, which I adore, then I basically spent $250 to play number 3, which in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I can't say enough good about this one, if you haven't played it, even if you don't like MGS, you NEED to play it.
Now 2 is a different story, I'm having to FORCE myself through, the story is interesting and everything... Just... well it must be Raiden, I can't think of any other reason, well I guess after 3's mechanics are soooo good, maybe going back has me burnt out on some things.

Raiden is bad ass from the previews in MGS 4
BananaBoat @ May 18th 2008 3:23PM
So going into 4, the story is basically that snake is a clone of big boss, and Liquid's arm is grafted onto Ocelot (and thus his personality). Now Liquid has hatched a scheme to destroy the world with Nanomachine controlled military guys? Does MGS4 explain why snake is old, or do I need to watch more of these retrospectives to find out?
They waited so many years between games that I only have a partial idea of what the hell is going on =p
Kizzle @ May 18th 2008 3:30PM
I think Snake is old because of the FoxDie virus from MGS1. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
sicsided @ May 18th 2008 3:31PM
from what I've heard, it is FOXDIE that has ravaged his body and made him old? Perhaps.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 18th 2008 3:35PM
It's either that or because as clones him and liquid age faster, but since liquid is just an arm now he ages normally as ocelot. As far as I know foxdie doesn't do anything except kill you so I think it's just his accelerated aging as a clone.
Hyams @ May 18th 2008 3:39PM
It's because he's a clone. It's mentioned near the beginning of MGS2, when we first see Liquid take over Ocelot. He says that because Big Boss was in his 50s when he was cloned, the clones suffer from accelerated aging.
Presumably it affected Solidus worse of all, because he's the same age as Solid in MGS2 but looks a lot older.
BananaBoat @ May 18th 2008 3:49PM
Aah, Fox Die ages you faster eh. Makes sense, thanks.
BananaBoat @ May 18th 2008 3:51PM
Crap, as I was replying, Hyams corrected you. Now I don't know which person to believe ;_;
Either way, the end result is the same I guess; He looks older than Dick Clark.
NekoMode @ May 18th 2008 3:56PM
Sent chills up my spine...
syrik zero @ May 18th 2008 5:44PM
I love those games. I had all of them!
Brennan @ May 18th 2008 6:39PM
i played MGS1 for Gamecube n it was cool, but what specifically did the game do that really ticked off fans of the original MGS1 for PS1? I thought it was a great remake.
Hyams @ May 19th 2008 6:59AM
The main complaint is that they redid the cut scenes, and turned Snake into freakin' Neo. They also re-recorded all the audio, but David Hayter (Solid Snake) was the only one who cared, so the rest of the cast gave a less emotional performance. Furthermore, they also changed the accents of some of the characters for no apparent reason.
With regards to gameplay: the levels weren't designed for the additional skills that Twin Snakes let you use, which made an already too easy game even easier. It's possible to just stand in the corner of a room and shoot everyone in FPS mode. These new skills also unbalanced some of the boss fights.

I love these games. They've inspired a graphic novel that I'm working on currently. Sniper Wolf FTW.
John McPoop @ May 18th 2008 7:26PM
How anyone can not like this series is beyond me. Its by far the best series of games ever made and in fact created a genre all of its own. MGS 4 will consume me like GTA IV has consumed so many others. Its going to be GOTY!
Cesaria (MKW:2621-2994-1376) @ May 19th 2008 7:42AM
Some people don't like the crazy plot or sneaking around gameplay, both of which are the selling points to me. I do understand why some people don't like to sneak though, it pretty much goes against everything video games have taught you since the first one.
NvM @ May 18th 2008 7:46PM
MGS is my favorite series I never played.
I started playing it on my Gamecube when Twin Snakes came out and loved it, then I bought the original and loved that too.
I just never got around to getting a PS2.
I have a 360, but the Xbox ports are hard to find and I don't think they even work for the new one.
I'm still amused when my friends tell me about 2(without ruining it) and telling me the jist of 3.
I might be getting a PS2 soon just for MGS, hopefully I won't have to wait another like 6 years to play 4.

Was it just me, or was the narration in this Part 2 of the retrospective absolutely awful?
