Pokemon Platinum revealed, set for fall release in Japan
Pokéfanatics across the globe have been anxiously tied to their poké-related news sites over the past few weeks, attempting to prognosticate what gemstone/precious metal/color would serve as the title for the next installment in the beloved monster-enslaving series -- shortly after CoroCoro magazine dropped word of the upcoming Pokémon Platinum, the Sandshrew-swift Nintendo swooped in to confirm the title, and to reveal a fall release window for the game in Japan.
Following the pattern of pokéreleases thus far, it will serve as a companion to the two current-generation titles, Diamond and Pearl -- much like Yellow, Crystal, and Emerald did for their respective generations. That means we'll likely be treated to new sprites for many the monsters, and a few tweaks to the story, but not many new entries into the ol' Pokédex. Perhaps that expansion will come in the franchise's next generation, Pokémon Ununbium and Cadmium.
[Thanks, Vinay.]

deaftly @ May 18th 2008 3:53PM
Not familiar with Nintendo games huh?

Expanded Online capabilities would go a long way towards making this worth it to those of us who have Diamond or Pearl
rTwelve @ May 18th 2008 2:17PM
like the Online Underground I heard this has?
SWAT Kats are back! @ May 18th 2008 3:04PM
Yes: That would've gotten me the 32 people met requirement that would've allowed me to acquire Spiritomb, which i coveted for its anti-Psychic type potential

I'm not a fan of MMO's but I would like to see a PokeMMOn...
Or a Mushroom Kingdom MMO...
Huey2k2 @ May 18th 2008 2:11PM
I am an fan of MMO's, and I also would love to see a Pokemon MMO.
I used to love Pokemon back in the day when I was in the 7th grade.
NoHitHair @ May 18th 2008 2:47PM
A Pokemon MMO...
I think it could work. I'd try it. Assuming it's an ingenuitive MMO that doesn't wreak of half-assed corner cutting.
Waffle Slayer @ May 18th 2008 5:42PM
Done.

I wanted to see that like 2/3 years ago when MMOs were really becoming THE THING, now the very idea of a pokemon MMO doesn't interest me ¬_¬ They had thier chance, and they did nothing with it.
Waffle Slayer @ May 18th 2008 6:27PM
Well these days there are many ridiculous MMOs popping up. Its the new fad.
Call of Duty MMO
Sonic MMO
The canceled Marvel MMO
Fallout MMO
Bioshock MMO
Star Wars: KOTOR MMO
LEGO MMO
Star Trek MMO
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. MMO
Although most of these are rumored or whatnot. Its an example to show how devs are trying to use popular IPs for MMOs. I'm sure I missed a few as well.
rowd149 @ May 18th 2008 1:44PM
See, now, I was absolutely CONVINCED that this would be name "Obsidian" because of Darkrai... :(
rTwelve @ May 18th 2008 2:22PM
The prevalent theory was that it would be Girasol or Opal, because of Giratina, Mesprit, and to a lesser extant, Heatran
Anticrawl @ May 18th 2008 3:16PM
Why would you think that when the name was announced last month? Along with the Japanese relase date.
rowd149 @ May 18th 2008 5:11PM
To be quite honest, somehow I missed the announcement. D: Yeah, I know.
And as for Obsidian, I thought of it as soon as I found out the new (at the time) movie was gonna be "Dialga vs Palkia vs Darkrai".
Anticrawl @ May 18th 2008 7:53PM
Apparently Joystiq did as well (though honestly I thought I got my news from here).
In any case the next series will probably be things like Obsidian and other things specific to certain geographical locations. Obsidian will likely be the 3rd installment as well.
Anticrawl @ May 18th 2008 7:56PM
Actually no I remember where it was confirmed. Late April someone leaked a scan of a magazine confirming the release window, title and some of the pokemon that will be in it along with some newer forms.
mr nimblewick @ May 18th 2008 1:48PM
Whenever a new pokemon game is announced, I think "Okay, this will be the first pokemon game I buy," but then there is always a new version with more pokemon... I just have to wait until they announce the "last" and "biggest" pokemon. As if that will ever happen.
Roto13 @ May 18th 2008 2:11PM
You could say that about pretty much every game series ever. Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald aren't the same game as Pearl/Diamond/Platinum any more than Majora's Mask is the same game as Ocarina of Time.
finnith @ May 18th 2008 2:21PM
Whereas Majora's Mask added some new "meat" to the gameplay with the introduction of masks and transformations, new installments of Pokemon now only bring new(and ugly, for the most part) Pokemon with new attacks and (sometimes) a new region. Fact is, Pokemon has been recycled a lot.

SHINX IS NOT AN UGLY. Thx.
Fatass of Haikuness @ May 18th 2008 3:29PM
While each Pokemon game does add on significantly to the last (Not game, but sub series, you know, like R/B/Y or G/S/C), they're usually years apart, so once you know the end of a sub series is coming out (in this case, Platinum), it's not a bad idea to check the game out once it comes out.

And people complain that North American developers release the same crap every year in a new package?
How many Pokemon games does this make now?
Goblin @ May 18th 2008 2:30PM
Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Diamond, Peal, Platinum, Stadium, Stadium 2, Colliseum, Battle Revolution, XD: Gale of Darkness, Snap, Pinball, Trozei/Link, Trading Card Game: The Game!, Puzzle League, Puzzle Challenge, Hey You! Pikachu, Channel, Dash, Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team, Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team, Ranger, Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time, Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness, Farm Channel.
Off the top of my head.
JakubK666 (Ninja Defence Force) @ May 18th 2008 2:52PM
Not trying to defend it but I'm pretty damn certain that these games introduce a lot more than Madden/Fifa sequels.
Benny @ May 18th 2008 3:05PM
They're just much better games overall. I buy one game from every 'set' - FireRed and LeafGreen being the only one's I've given a miss.
Pokemon is the only RPG I play. I just wish a bit of effort would be put into making a PROPER 3D version - none of the XD crap.
Fatass of Haikuness @ May 18th 2008 3:30PM
Outside of the remakes and the sets (which are usually released within a year or two of each other), each Pokemon game is different enough to warrant a sequel.
Benny @ May 18th 2008 3:42PM

The games, or the Pokemon? The numbers will soon be equal at this rate.
Yourself @ May 18th 2008 2:29PM
Pearl was the first Pokemon game I bought since Red when I was in elementary school. Great game, but I think once a decade is good enough for me.
Andrex (NDF - Host) @ May 18th 2008 2:30PM
Pokemon Ununbium would rock my socks.
After this maybe GameFreak can do some work on the Wii side of things.
Please?
SWAT Kats are back! @ May 18th 2008 3:09PM
Nintendo could make them, i suppose. They moved to wholly buy out GameFreak only recently. Apparently they were never wholly owned
Gives Nintendo leverage to make them do things that they couldn't make them do before
chez @ May 18th 2008 2:31PM
Do want.
I waited to get Pearl too. I'm only 6 hours in. That said it'll be years before we get this game in English.

Great. I knew they were going to release this, so I skipped out on Diamond and Pearl. Now I'll have the chance to play it.

ahhh "Pokémon Ununbium and Cadmium"..thats some funny shit right there. but tah i heard that Pokémon Kryptonite is coming out in '09.
hvnlysoldr @ May 18th 2008 3:02PM
I'm finshing FFIII before getting back into Diamond. Then I'll barrel my brother's Pearl. And then if I have enough time I'll pick Platinum and finish the Revolution.
SWAT Kats are back! @ May 18th 2008 3:14PM
FINISH FFIII?
You're a bigger man than i, i suppose. I never got past the massive grind-fest required if you wanted to survive after the Point of No Return inside the Cloud of Darkness
It got to the point where i wasn't getting enough EXP in the dungeon before the Point, but if i went past the Point, i'd get my ass kicked
blueberry @ May 18th 2008 3:05PM
I'm still holding out for Pokemon Peanut and Pokemon Butter, with a possible third iteration of Pokemon Jelly.
hvnlysoldr @ May 18th 2008 3:32PM
No Peanut Butter and Bananas. Your goal is to become a Pokemon Rock king.
ackbar @ May 18th 2008 3:07PM

I still dream of an MMO, with pokemon wildlife, and fully interaction with pokemons. Like, get on top of a pidgeot.
