Demented teenager, apocalypse survivor, bubble boy, bottom boi and now the Prince of Persia. Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast to play the title "roll" (tumble, flip) in The Prince of Persia movie adaptation produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Before the complaining begins, it could've been worse (read: it could've been Orlando Bloom).
Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a sixth century Persian prince who joins up with Tamina (played by nooblet Gemma Arterton) in an attempt to prevent The Bad Guy from using the Sands of Time. Production begins in July, so Jake's got plenty of time for the serious waxing and spray-on tanning necessary for the role.

Why not do something daring, Hollywood, and cast someone ethnically appropriate to the region?

I can see your point, but how would that work for Superman?

Persians are not Arabs, they are Caucasians. Gyllenhaal IS 'ethnically appropriate' to the region.

Jake Gyllenhaal was also the star of the Aqua Man sequel, after Vince was holding out for more money.

I don't see what the problem is here.
Sure he hasn't been in any action films but before Brokeback he wasn't in any gay cowboy films and from what I hear he did a fantastic job. He wasn't in any war movies before Jarhead and he did a damn fine job. He wasn't in any "demented, mental teenager" movies before Donnie Darko and he did outstanding.
I think Joystiq could possibly be the online capital for rampant negative unfounded speculation in every aspect of entertainment.

He's never played a Persian before, but that could work out by the same logic, right?

Wow...just wow. I guess this looks normal to the movie makers in Hollywood, but I am very offended. There are plenty of Persian actors out there looking for acting roles that would have loved to star in this movie. One actor in particular that would have been perfect...you know who I'm taking about.
I'm telling you....the casting directors these days are on crack. Why do these awful people get paid for casting the wrong people in movies. It's like if they made a movie called "The King of Africa" starring Jimmy Fallon.

I'm afraid there aren't any big Persian movie stars. And I don't know who you are thinking of but my guesses are too old for the part.
Jake, on the other hand, can play a Persian. I don't see anything about his looks that would exempt him from the role. And he's a good actor too.
That said, I do understand where you're coming from. Hollywood does have a severe diversity problem but at least this is a movie that's about the Middle East that won't involve terrorists. Be happy about that.

I find it funny that every movie with a Middle Eastern terrorists is actually a Middle Eastern actor. It's so easy to find them then. I can say the same thing about taxi cab drivers and Gas station owners. It just seems so wrong.

Leave it up to Disney to pick someone who's not even of middle eastern descent to play a character of middle eastern descent. Genius.

O come on...a actor's job is to master the role and i don't see plenty of persians anywhere...but Jake is looking pretty persian to me. The movie isn't goin to be done in a less than a year so that's enough time for training, excercising. I have a good gut feeling about this movie, usually there right.

C'mon people.
The fact that this is a Disney produced movie and Jerry *Asshat* Bruckheimer is directing it should be more then enough evidence to tell you that this movie is not going to be what us Prince of Persia fans are hoping for.
Adding Jake Gyllenhaal to this mountain of crap is by no means going to make this movie any better or worse.
My guess is they picked him to sweeten the stench on this stinker and get some Gyllenhall fans to come to see it when it opens.
Personally, I really like Gyllenhall. I think he is a fine actor but I don't think he's the right choice for this movie. I would've liked to have seen possibly a new face for this role and someone who is actually of Middle Eastern descent.
Oh well, a Prince of Persia fan can still dream of proper movie. *sigh*

You must have ordered the "See through the Hollywood Bullplop" sunglasses too. For a second there I thought I was the only one that bought them. Good to know other people made the investment.
We're here to kick Hollywood A** and chew bubble gum, and we're all out of bubble gum.
