James Cameron: Ubisoft's 'Avatar' game is in 3D
Someone should tell James Cameron that games have been "3D" since, well ... a really long time ago. Oh, he means that other 3D. Like, the kind where things (yo-yos, swords, clowns ... shudder ... the clowns!) spring off of the movie screen at you. Speaking at Microsoft's Advance 08 advertising conference (where his audience was surely a lively bunch, probably total gaming geeks) the Titanic director let slip that the video game based on his upcoming sci-fi epic Avatar (not The Last Airbender -- M. Night Shyamalan's got that) will be in 3D, just like the movie. CNet reports Cameron -- who's been talking up stereoscopic films, TV,
Avatar (the movie) is set to hit theaters summer 2009. Avatar (the game) is tipped to precede the film's debut, although it will likely not be an MMO as originally planned.

I'm having Rad Racer flashbacks!

Rad Racer was sweet! In high school a couple of years ago there was a random copy of Rad Racer in our lunch room next to some school trophies and other stuff up on these big shelfs that went around the top of the room. One day my friends and I got on a chair, took the game, and then went home and played it on my NES. I don't think we ever took it back.

I love Cameron's films, he is a brilliant man. But his insistence on 3D seems a bit permature. Still I am awaiting his next film with great anticipation.

3D?! Man, games just keep getting better and better.
Hashbrown Hunter @ May 21st 2008 2:24PM
And even more headache-inducing!
Arturis @ May 21st 2008 2:34PM
After seeing 300, Meet the Robinsons, and Chicken Little in 3D without any headaches or ill side effects, I am more then ready to see the technology brought home effectively (and interactively). Hell, I would love to get 3D versions of those movies for home as well.

I'm still banking on all that stuff i saw in Back to the Future II to come to reality in 2015. Like the 3D shark coming out and flying cars and such. I hope society doesn't let me down.
But if robots have to fuck it all up in 2029, then i'm cool with that, too.
Ridgecity @ May 21st 2008 4:07PM
I was just thinking about that one, lol...

Most people buy assault rifles for zombie invasions. So many, that it seems everyone has a few zombie guns.
More folks need to start stocking up on 50cal's in the event of Terminator invasion. Zombies are a pretty minimal threat at this point.

I love 3D and it doesn't give me headaches at all, but I know a lot of people can't handle it. I wonder if they have taken this into consideration for box office receipts.
And the way Cameron, Lucas and Speilberg talk about 3D lately it makes it sound like they have figured out a way to have 3D without glasses. If so it would be like BttF 2.
Cellien @ May 21st 2008 3:08PM
I think it's still glasses, just not the red/blue kind. But, it's a much more natural way of doing 3D to your eyes. The camera supposedly works just like a set of eyes when focusing on objects close and far away, the cameras looks more in towards each other or out depending on the object its focusing on.

3D is the future of theatres......this isn't the gimmicky 3D of the past.....every major studio and most major directors have a 3D Project in the works.
NATO_Duke @ May 21st 2008 2:38PM
*Fingers crossed for a 3D Jaws game*
oshin @ May 21st 2008 3:09PM
Its the year 2008, back in the 1950s people thought we`d be in hover cars by now, instead it seems were still looking at 3d films in dorky glasses, just like the 1950s
GoonieGooGoo @ May 21st 2008 4:04PM
This makes me wanna get out my SEGA MASTER SYSTEM and play Blade Eagle 3D, Maze Hunter 3D, Missile Defense 3D, Space Harrier 3D, Poseidon Wars 3D, and Zaxxon 3D.
Yes...I have all of them and the 3D Glasses still work.
Jealous?? Yes....you should be.
Sean @ May 21st 2008 4:40PM
I had Missile Defense 3D.. with the lightgun. It's ridiculously hard to aim at a 3d representation of an object that moves with your head.
Ridgecity @ May 21st 2008 4:05PM
But how are they gonna make it work on all tvs? last I remember it wasn't reachable which so many types of tv sizes and framerates. Will they use old red and blue glasses for the games?
Evan @ May 21st 2008 4:22PM
Most likely red and cyan, as in recent years has proven to be better than the old red and blue.
Mr.ESC @ May 21st 2008 6:57PM
Avatar :D
(not The Last Airbender)
:(
Jorge @ May 21st 2008 8:28PM
Like Sly Cooper 3 did a few years back? Yeah, it was cool but not for more than 5 minutes at a time.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ May 22nd 2008 3:04AM
Will the glasses support those who are already wearing reading glases?
t_m @ May 22nd 2008 10:42PM
Nightmare before Christmas was cool in 3d. Though I did have to take the glasses off once or twice during the movie. It didn't give me headaches, just made my eyes feel tired.
Beowulf was ok too.
However all the cinemas here charge about 30-50% extra for 3D movies.. which is sure gonna put a lot of people off. (Starwars originals in 3d would rock though...)
