The New York Times has an interesting piece this morning about how actor Michael Hollick earned about $100,000 for playing GTA IV protagonist Niko Bellic. Had the actor done the role for almost any other medium than video games, he would have received very generous residuals and royalties off the title, which made $500 million in its first week. The piece basically explores how all the actors in GTA IV would be rolling in dough had the work not been in video games.
Of course, if the actor gets residuals, does the artist who "made" Niko get a cut? Although the actors provided voices, and apparently motion-capture, what about all the other people that worked on the creation of these characters? People aren't buying these games because of the actors, they're getting it because of the title and its associated gameplay. In time, this issue will probably come to a head (especially as the industry grows), but for now it comes off like actors whining while everyone else is getting a similarly bum deal. Maybe it's time the video game writers, artists and developers started complaining too? Union, union, union!

IF this were an animated movie, a star would get all the extra benefits from doing the voice, but a Joe No-name actor would not. The game is not different. Most work in film and games alike is done as work for hire or on salary with no long term participation. If you want a cut of the back end you need to get to the point where you are worth it.
For the guy who voiced Niko, he made $100K for the work. I guarantee that if they do a sequel featuring the same character, he'll make a lot more than that. That's how it works.
And as someone who works pretty hard all year long to make less than $100K, I think that much for a couple of weeks in a studio doing voice over is pretty sweet.

The line forms to the left of willing persons that could have voiced Niko admirably, written a comparable script, done the character art in a like fashion and the list goes on and on. R* offered these guys a rate and they agreed. They should be thankful that they were part of the team that created a very good video game and shouldn't expect anything more for their efforts. This dude makes a weak attempt at that notion in the article, saying something to the effect that he was paid what he signed up for, but if he really believes that, why is he whining to the NYT? Likely because he was paid for the interview, LOL. Face facts: this dude was a spare before Niko and remains a spare after Niko, save for in the minds of a few video game zealots.
I'm assuming that everyone who wants to buy the DLC would still buy it if this dude weren't back as Niko? Thought so.
By the way, the poster who said he "got chills" from one of the commericals ... LMAO! Get some fresh air and try experiencing what the real world has to offer!!

He got $100,000?!
That's about $85,000 too much. All he did was do a poor Shrek imitation.

Everyone is missing the point. The reason to be paid residuals is that when you are an actor you do not know how big a movie will be until your work is already finished. By being paid a residual you are saying instead of taking a big upfront fee you will be paid based on the success of the work. GTAIV was going to be a high volume seller and any actor or other worker involved should have known this from the beginning and requested appropriate compensation. That being said some movie actors end up being in such a great bargining position they get both the big fee and residuals (Harrison Ford for new Indy film). The voice actor for Neiko was obviously not in this position and only got the high up front fee.

You know what. . .
I think these Actor/Writer unions are 100% bullshit. As someone who works for a large company my ideas don't get me much more than a nice salary increase.
I watch a lot of TV and I think they should be salaried employees based on their output. They make a good show, they get paid more next year. Their show/writing sucks . . .they see the door.
These writers are a dime a dozen anyway. . 100M for the voice actor of Niko? You could of outsourced it to Russia for 10K I'm betting.
Only the "Creators" of the owners if the show/idea should get reimbursed on the shows long term success. Man, I so wished they just fired all those damn writers durring the writers strike . . . I'm betting new blood would make the shows better.
F'n unions. . .

The first step is recognizing the talents who create games. Movies list the producer, director, and actors on the DVD box, why don't games? That would allow fans to follow their favorite talent from game to game. And it might encourage game developers to hang onto people who do good work, instead of hiring and laying off people seemingly at random.

I actually talked with another voice actor for GTA IV, who will be appearing in my web show Life in a Game as a major character.
They are not paid like Hollywood stars, that's for sure, but as he told me "It's fun and dynamic!"
That said, voice actors are RARELY famous outside of those who were previously famous before doing voice acting.
Who did the voice for Darkwing Duck? Sure you can look it up, but nobody knows that offhand. Yet millions of kids watched that show.

Where does the article tell us how much the whole GTA4 team got in residuals?
Wait, it doesn't?
Are you telling me the NYT doesn't really care about the little guy!? My world is shattered!

who really cares how much he got paid? Yes he got screwed, but so did we. If life were truly fair, the whole team would of been paid evenly at a normal years salary and us consumers would of only had to pay $19.99 for the game. But this is the real world, wehre people create product x and it sells for millions. They dont want to lower the prices and make life more affordable for the average joe, they would rather keep prices as high as people are willing to pay and make the most they can.

Actors are already overpaid, we don't need voice actors getting over paid too....seriously, some actors get millions to be in a movie.
Get over it, you're rich.

In response to everyone who's jumping on the union bandwagon, and speaking as someone who actively works on video games and has done so for over 6 years:
Unions are a bad, bad idea for the video game industry. I'll sum it up in three words:
Double game prices.
Right now, while I hate the industry works, and I really do, being on the "low end" of the pay:hours ratio, unionizing is not the answer. All that will do is raise costs to the point where nobody will buy the games, thus driving the unions completely out of business. It'll go right back to non-union companies making games.

I'd rather see developers get royalties before the voice actors. People didn't buy GTA 4 because he was the voice of Niko. People bought it because it was a GTA game. The value is in the franchise, not the people playing the voices.

He made 100k providing his voice for the video game. Thats still more then an individual programmer makes and I'm sure they did a lot more then he did. I would be happy with 100K. Hell you could easily invest that 100k and live the rest of your life on it if you wanted to.
But oh noes! I can't buy that mustang i always wanted if i do that!
Cry more?
