"The first reviews were rather scathing towards the PS3 "exclusive" FPS, and many accused us of anti-PS3 sentiment (in spite of us not having written any of those reviews)."

Are you serious? People are that fanboyish that they would actually blame you guys for other people's opinions?

This is pretty pathetic.

I was one who said something like "They show only the reviews with bad scores", not as a fanboy, but because I think they should have waited for a few more reviews, showing only the first three with below average score was a little harsh.

Everything apart from that, that image is really funny

This is spin. People have been noticing the negative tone of lots of ps3fanboy articles, the Haze scores article was just the tip of the iceberg.

Regardless, when you have to dig this far down to get a positive review, chances are the game sucks.

Yeah, it's because Robert is a little baby who obviously made the mistake of preordering Haze and took it out on Andrew Yoon. Robert wrote in the "Haze initial reviews are not promising" blog:

Quite strange that these have not showed up on Metacritic eh?

I think that Famitsu's ratings of FPSs are a little skewed anyway, since FPSs haven't oversaturated their game market yet. Here in America, where there are eight FPSs per console per month, the standards are a bit tougher.

Why did anyone ever think this game would be anything other than average? From the first screenshot, there's been absolutely nothing that screamed "This will set Haze apart from every other FPS!"
I've asked why, and indeed pleaded people not to get excited because I knew it would be another damp squib like Lair and Heavenly Sword, but I could understand the initial excitement for those two games... but this?! And I've never gotten an answer why. In fact I've been called a Halo fanboy on numerous occasions for merely asking the question, and I've never even picked up an Xbox controller!
The fact that the "best" reviews are all mediocre (it's common knowledge that 7/10 games are trash) really doesn't say a lot.
So who hyped this game? The devs or the PS3 fans? And since when does anyone listen to dev hype? I think there's a "world changing" game released every week or two, according to them.

The game was hyped for the sole reason that it was a PS3 exclusive. I think people WANTED it to be good. I'm in your camp, though. From the beginning, I saw nothing but a generic FPS. Then I played the demo, for about 7 minutes, and my opinion didn't change. I was mildly amused when I held the Nectar button too long and I killed most of my team, but other than that I saw nothing special about the game.

This console generation is seeing people vehemently defend their purchase tooth and nail, and I guess that extends to console exclusives, as well.

I think the hype was early on when we all first heard about the game. I think as we learned more and saw more, the hype turned the other way toward the negative. I, for one, wasn't expecting much from the game and think it deserved an average at best score.

I disagree on Heavenly Sword being compared to Lair or Haze. The only negative about it was it was short. It is a unique and well done game. Don't compare it to Lair or Haze. Not in the same league at all.

I never expected it to be anything other than average, but I am surprised at the low scores. I mean, Halo 3 gets 10's and I thought that game was too short, had poor game mechanics, slow & clunky, and of course very derivative. Still OK by as far as shooters go, but 10's? Come on... My point is that I don't see why people who scored Halo as "best game evar, ZOMG 2nd coming of Jeebus!" aren't scoring Haze even close to that.

I'd probably score Haze around 6.5-7.5, about the same as I'd score Halo 3. Co-op campaign mode is something that every shooter should have, and the nectar mechanics add an interesting twist + good story elements. From what I derived of the trailers, the govt is lying about the benefits/risks of using nectar, and the protagonist realizes this eventually and gets out somehow then proceeds to try and blow the case wide open to the public. I'm usually not that interested in FPS's (aside from the occasional UT binge, or TF kick) but I'm actually thinking of getting Haze because the story intrigues me.

"I've asked why, and indeed pleaded people not to get excited because I knew it would be another damp squib like Lair and Heavenly Sword"

Heavenly Sword was good.

"it's common knowledge that 7/10 games are trash"

"Sorry but if you really fell that way, you must have a very short list of games. 7/10 can be a really good game, it depends on your tastes and the reviewers tastes. Broaden your horizons!"

I do understand your point about the hype though, I never understood it. I think the "hype" was actually misplaced curiosity, at 1. The fact that it changed exclusivity status more than and old person changes depends. 2. The constant delays probably gave people a false sense of "perceived" polish that the final game should have had. 3. The Devs petegree of FPS classics.

All in all, the game got way more attention than it most likley deserved. Plus I think the Xbots love jumping all over anything on the PS3 that doesn't live up to hype.

Just my 2 cents.

The thing is, I still believe that Graphics don't make the game. So screenshots good or not still made me hold out hope for an enticing story and good gameplay. I knew the game was bad as soon as I got about 5-10 minutes into the demo. It's not that it's bad, it's just not worth $60 for another run and gun with dumb AI game. I still feel the same way about the original Killzone by the way, which is why I'm not holding my breath for the second one. They're both decent games, but they're not amazing either. Killzone for PSP, by the way, was really fun.

The game play for Heavenly Sword was not unique. Have you ever heard of a game called dynasty warriors? I think there have been about 34 of them.

I bet the giant required install played into the hype, some people may have hoped the game's quality would justify the install to everyone.

considering i have actually played the game, and almost done with it. the game is frickin' awesome!

the reason it is getting bad reviews is because the entire first half of the game is meant to be crap. it is in an environment where you cant see, the voices are repetitive, ai is flat out DUMMMB, and the use of nectar is absolutely required to be able to do anything at all. when "the twist" happens everything is explained and unfortunately that dialogue is completely missed or just being overlooked. i am an FPS FAN, love them on my PC, and this is the first one besides ghost recon back on the PS2 that i can say controls well. the ironsights, precision, and everything else that changes during the flip is phenomenal. SURE, it isnt a halo, a cod4, some gargantual franchise, but keep in mind this is HAZE, not HAZE 4. for a start, for a beginning, for a NEW FPS the main draw is the story elements and the all around fantastic feel of the game. nectar helps it, adds a lot of dualality to the game and keeps things interesting.

let me put it this way, the controls work in every second of the game. the driving is a bit odd, but guess what it still works.

go out and get this GAME!

I hope you take this as a lesson to wait for more reviews before you put them up as a "group"... Ps3Fanboy.com.

I love you guys & all. But seriously, if you want to toy around, don't tell me you didn't expect some sort of backlash. You need to have a variety of reviews before you make an ARTCILE on one. Sure one of them may have a negative review, fine... but without another one to compare it to, how are we supposed to get a broader view as to what the average impression it has?

Usually these "Badly done anti-PS3 sarcasm articles" are seen to come from Yoon. However we all know what his console preference is, so why the hell should anyone give a fuck what he thinks anyway?... by that, no one should take any of it seriously either.

As for Haze, I see it as pure FUN... nothing else. Story driven or not, I'm not sitting there with a bucket of popcorn in my hands, I'm just in for the good old multiplayer fun Halo 1, 2 & 3 have had an opportunity to express before.

Haze has a variety of different scores, which isn't really unusual these days. All in all Reviews aren't my fort'e & I've generally learnt to realize they are ALWAYS, no matter how genuine some writers try to be, are persuaded by HYPE & MONEY. They had their minds made up even before they picked up the controller.

Heh.

He says he prefers his PS3... I'm now inclined to believe that, but out of curiousity. What evidence, outside of GTAIV 360 (which has exclusive DLC and achievements and was therefore his choice), do you have to back that accusation up?

As for Haze, have you played it yet? Aside from the demo? I was thinking very much along the lines that you said - people made their minds up about it long before the game reached it's final state. However, I'm not so sure I want to drop $60+ to find out if that suspicion is correct.

What really got me excited for this game was the four player co-op. I was looking forward to picking this game up, being one of the few to enjoy the demo, despite it's lack of polish. The reviews however changed my mind about picking it up.
Perhaps I'll rent it one weekend when my friends and I are bored out of our minds.

I dunno, I find this game to be average. What really downgraded the game for me was the displaced voice acting, just doesn't seem to fit the game (at least what was in the demo).

Then again, FPS are a hard thing to judge. COD4 is great fun, however if you look at it...outside of being able to shoot through walls, (which I'm sure has most likely been done in some obscure title) its just another FPS. However I can play the hell out of that game. Love it so much that I was super geeked about UT3 and when I got it, I played it like 4 times and returned it. Not because it was bad, just seemed like the fun was in COD

So in the end its all personal preference. What sucks to me, might be the almighty awesomesauce to you. Thank god for gamefly and other services such as them.

Anyone get the feeling that there was some internal strife at Free Radical?
The way the game was delayed was a bit odd I thought, rather than a date being pushed back it always seemed to be on the verge of coming out then suddenly wasn't.
Then it turns out to be a bit rubbish and lacking polish.
Strikes me as a title that has had problems with its development outside the scope of things just taking longer than expected like most titles experience.

I agree with Stoo.....David Doak, the head of Free Radical never wanted to go on camera to talk about this game...

Before any game on the PS3 is released, Sony must approve it first. Seems like Sony sent it back to FR on several occasions and David Doak seems very pissed at Sony. Seems like there ideas were a bit different on this one.

Also, seems Sony had the upper hand on this one b/c since they paid for exclusivity, they could basically keep sending it back until they were satisfied. give us more money. However, seems like it got to a point were FR said pay us more $ to put in certain features or sue us. Sony prolly said forget it and brought the game to market. Kinda like what happened with Lair.
