Microsoft's Shane Kim now sees the end to the console war as a new magic number: first system to 100 million units sold wins, he tells Wired. That's an increase of 90 million over the 10 million mark Microsoft used to promote as the bellwether of victory. Kim believes consumers are still deciding what system to choose and that this console generation is different from the others. (Yeah, it's the first time Microsoft actually has a chance.)
Kim explains that Sony won the last couple generations, but Nintendo is clearly in first place this time around; however, he wonders if Nintendo can keep that momentum going up to 100 million (at Nintendo's rate of supply, it could take decades). He even questions it there'll be a clear-cut winner this generation. Finally, Kim assures that the Microsoft hardware guys are still working on reducing the cost of Xbox 360, in order to hit that "mass market" price point.

any console that sold more total units at that time is that time's winner !!! what a quote !!
seriously, Ive got an Xbox360 and a NintendoDS and I couldnt be more happy with my choices. Exclusive titles that are out of my reach are few in between and I like my games... enough said...
Im just gonna cry when FF13 comes out (when is that again? 2010?)

Seeing the battery of statements that have been coming from MS EED division executives, they seem really insecure about their second place
I don't know, it's like they're struggling to redefine console war victory

F a price cut, just give me a freakin 360 that:
A- will work more than 50% of the time
B- Doesnt sound like a lawnmower in my entertainment center
c-has decent prices on wifi adaptor and HDD
Then I will buy another 360

So if Nintendo does "win" this generation's console race, will all future consoles be like the Wii? Not being sarcastic here.
Nintendo's made a shitload of money but I still want game devices like the 360, PS3 and PSP, even if they are more expensive, cost more to develop games on and make less profit unlike the DS and Wii.
Please, lets have both types on the market, the Wiis and the 360/PS3.

I think that the very expensive console that tries to compete with the gaming PC won't return next generation. This won't mean a flood of shovelware, however. Wii's shovelware has as much to do with issues between Nintendo and 3rd parties as much as the vastly different architecture
I'm willing to bet, even, that if the Wii had been in the same hardware ballpark as PS360, that you would still see a good chunk of multiplatform games leave Wii out, just like they left GC out last time

Because of the tremendous success of the Wii and DS, I don't want all others to follow their way and forgo making graphically intensive games and all that.
I know it looks bad when a Wii game costs much less to produce because of the simpler hardware but gets much more profit because of its huge userbase. Then whats the point of making games for 360, PS3 and PSP?
The Wii sells a lot and is also cheap to produce, nets Nintendo profit unlike the PS3 for Sony which loses money on each system sold.

Maybe in the next generation, there will be no consoles. It will all be internet/subscription based. That will be a whole new industry!

Maybe winning in the U.S but what about taking over the whole world!?
But man, 100 million consoles, thats a lot of silicon and plastic. And then their sadly dumped when the next generation of consoles come about. : (
All these electronics we have and they become outdated EXTREMELY fast. We NEED to make electronics as recyclable as possible now!

Superfriends quotes aside, though, number of units depends heavily on how much each one is making you, and how much you win in software royalties. And, no, I don't have those numbers.

Statements like this just seem.. I don't know, childish to me. I get the vibe that Microsoft wouldn't be saying this at all if they had the numbers the Wii does, but since they don't, they make a sham of an attempt to delay the declaration of a winner; a tactic they feel will give them more time to take the lead.
This, to me, is Microsoft's 'next-gen doesn't start until we say so'.

well just because sony supported their last two consoles longer than their competitors usually do doesn't mean they won't compete when the next round of consoles comes out. sony has a strategy to use the playstation as an investment, so the longer it stays around the bigger return they'll see. didn't they sell 130 million ps2 games last year? but that doesn't stop the ps3. not like it's going anywhere though. but anyway i think its a safe bet sony won't rely on the past performance of the ps3 when the next xbox comes out.3.

It's worth pointing out that the PS2 was never produced at 2.4 million units per month but Nintendo will produce the Wii with those numbers soon.
The Wii's current output of 2.1 million units per month is about what the PS2 did at the height of its popularity (it didn't sell as fast as the Wii)

So another price cut for the 360?
Damned. They're already level with the Wii, how low do you have to go?

There is no way that the 360 (or the PS3) will get to 100million this gen...dude needs to give his head a shake.
