id Software leaves ESA
GamePolitics has confirmed through an id Software representative that the Doom and Rage developer is no longer a member of the Entertainment Software Association. The departure comes after several other companies, including LucasArts, Activision and Vivendi, waved goodbye to the organization. It's unclear what prompted id's decision, but the ESA will be in trouble if these exits turn into an exodus. The ESA may release a full statement, acknowledging the latest departure, later today.

Alright! Down with the ESA!
Nick the Hero of Canton @ May 23rd 2008 2:59PM
Speaking of Lucas, I liked Indy IV...a lot...it was entertaining, which is all it should be. Though I didn't care for the CGI whackfest at the end...
On topic, does anyone know what is prompting all these leaves?
E.J. @ May 23rd 2008 4:36PM
Huh? Did you see Shia the monkeyboy?
Nick the Hero of Canton @ May 23rd 2008 4:42PM
Yes, and it was only like 5 seconds and not a big fucking deal.
Jnas @ May 23rd 2008 3:00PM
These companies pretty much know something we don't know. I wouldn't be suprised if more companies followed.
Batzarro(A.K.A Rap-Rock Cameo) @ May 23rd 2008 3:33PM
No, you had it right first: It's companies. Unless you meant ownership. Then it's company's.
Jnas @ May 23rd 2008 3:00PM

O ur kewl!
Jomolungma @ May 23rd 2008 3:01PM
So, this is getting interesting I suppose. Any rumors as to why all of these companies seem to be leaving at the same time? Any word on whether they will be forming a "competing" organization? This feels suspiciously like some ESA member (ahem, EA, ahem, anyone?) has grabbed ahold of ESA's reins and the other boys don't like it too much.
1234 @ May 23rd 2008 3:04PM
I dont care about ESA,it seemd to be getting corrupted anyway but some of the dutys ESA has are important for the industry, for everyone all of us so i hope someone else comes up for the job.
Zertoss @ May 23rd 2008 3:10PM
I'm predicting that either Infogrames or Ubisoft will be the next to leave. I base this prediction on random speculation.
4.5 @ May 23rd 2008 3:14PM
I'm hoping EA is next, just because they posted that thing about how they weren't going to leave.
Jomolungma @ May 23rd 2008 3:15PM
You may be right... eventually, ESA will just drop the S and become.... EA! Those douches.
Walt Jay @ May 23rd 2008 3:20PM
So what's the point of the ESA? Maybe that's the question that a company can't answer, hence them leaving.
Neil @ May 23rd 2008 3:23PM
You guys could just have told ESA about the rats in their building, they aren't THAT scary.
aristokrat @ May 23rd 2008 3:23PM
This does not seem like a good strategy for the industry, unless they have another lobbying organization in the wings. Or maybe with Jack Thompson out of the way soon, they feel artificially safe?
Nutchos @ May 23rd 2008 3:28PM
One of these companies needs to come out and say whats going on. Maybe the ESA is trying to change fees or policies they don't agree with but who knows.
AFAIK ESA has been the one fighting all these anti gaming bills and stuff.
PojoMofo @ May 23rd 2008 3:30PM

j.howlett @ May 23rd 2008 3:39PM
maybe they're leaving because the dues were raised because they left L.A. last year at the price of 5 mil i think it was.
343 Guilty Fart @ May 23rd 2008 3:46PM
It might be easier at this point to have a list of who is still in the ESA than out of it methinks.
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ May 23rd 2008 5:53PM
Not yet. Give it a couple more days for Konami, EA, Capcom, Nintendo, Sega, Square, Namco Bandai, Ubisoft, and Take Two to leave.
Anticrawl @ May 23rd 2008 4:24PM
Hopefully the ESA is going to stick around, they're the ones fighting for everyones' right to game when bullshit laws try to get passed.
Deezul @ May 23rd 2008 5:09PM
No, they are fighting for themselves. It just happens that it means WE can purchase their games. If the government said, "OK, no game can cost more than $30 retail" do you think the ESA would go along? They'd be lobbying like crazy to get the law overturned. Gamers sure as heck wouldn't... The ESA may appear to care about you, but they car about the almighty dollar, or euro, or yen.
potato @ May 23rd 2008 5:24PM
Deezul is right. I suspect part of this mass defection away from ESA is because they've been taking an extreme hardline approach against piracy.
They are now lobbying for the right to use your ISP and spy on your downloads. They are also in favor of banning BitTorrent and other P2P apps.
So just because they're fighting nuts like Jack Thompson does NOT mean they're on "our" side.
Mattb90 @ May 23rd 2008 5:14PM
The thing to note here is that these guys, while four independent companies, will effectively act together; Activision and Vivendi will soon be one company, while LucasArts and id Software have publishing agreements with Activision. Thus it may just take one leaving to trigger them all going.
Bootes @ May 23rd 2008 11:17PM
I was about to make the same comment but wasn't able to find the LucasArts connection to the rest. Activision and Vivendi are merging, they publish iD's games. Even if they don't have a connection to LucasArts it's basically one company, although the largest in this industry, and a fairly small one leaving. Not really a mass exodus.
colin @ May 23rd 2008 5:42PM
Ludwig is slipping, no paranomasia's ;(
t_m @ May 24th 2008 3:38AM
Yay! ID, LucasArts, Activision and Vivendi games now available at all good abandonware websites. Get downloading!
(though ID do tend to be lovely about open-sourcing their engines anyway)
Kun Hitori @ May 24th 2008 1:38PM
Is this the ESApocalypse?
VanillaMummy @ May 25th 2008 11:24AM
If ESA fought their battles more wisely, more groups would be staying methinks.
daytripper @ May 26th 2008 1:09AM
Now if only Hollywood studios could follow their lead and leave the MPAA.
