Since the news that the Live Arcade would be having its under-performing titles de-listed, the tubes have discussed at length many of the implications. In a response that seems absolutely inevitable with hindsight, someone has put together a list of XBLA titles that conform to two of the three criteria outlined by MS for a de-listing (Metacritic score of less than 65% and at least six months old).
The third criteria isn't accessible outside of Microsoft, and is the conversion rate, i.e. the percentage of demo downloaders who end up buying the full game. As we don't know what games have good conversion rates, the games on the list are therefore not absolutely guaranteed to be in danger. But if there are any on the list that tickle your fancy, now is the time to try them, as they're the most likely ones to leave the Marketplace.
Full list after the break.

You're a bit misguided. Literally nothing? If it cost Microsoft nothing to distribute a title on XBLA they probably wouldn't even consider this option and we'd see a lot higher adoption of XBLA by developers.

...How...How do thet think M$ would delete...CONTRA!!!!!!!!?????? That's...That's like a SIN man!!!
But I'd like it if they'd shift all the crappy games to a separate list, and help clean it up. That way you don't have to sift through mounds of crap to find good games. (like Contra. Just saying.)

Honestly, how many copies of Contra do people need? Newer gamers (myself included) don't really care to have Contra all over the place. Library games like this just don't have the appeal anymore, and it's reflected in the Metacritic scores.
Clever use of M$, by the way. New one for me.

...Okay Big John, do you not like it because it's challenging or something? Plus, "newer gamers" still like Contra and appreciate the challenge it has. I also detected a hint of sarcasm in that last statement. Still, I appreciate that you actually use logic in your arguments unlike some people on here. That's a nice change.

I agree with the thought that MS should try selling them cheaper.
And Bomberman: Act Zero isn't an XBLA game.

I downloaded the trial version of a few of these (sucky) games, and they appear on my list of played games, and I can't get rid of them! Does anyone know if there's a way?

lol, that's pretty much everything on my hard drive!

If you're going to consider buying these games "wasting money", then you probably shouldn't be buying them in the first place.

Actually you can still get these games after they are de-listed. All that is required is for you to find someone who has the game and get them to recommend it to you. Then you will be able to purchase it.

The recommendation doesn't send you the game data, though. I'm betting this hole will be plugged unless you have a good source for something otherwise.

Why is Arkadian Warriors listed? I remember reading how it was the most popular arcade game.
Posted: May 26th 2008 3:15PM (Unverified) said
...because it scores under 65% on Metacritic and has been around for more than six months.
Remember conversion rate. Also, "most popular arcade game" doesn't automatically equal a stay -- this list, I believe, affirms that library arcade games just aren't that big of a pull anymore.

The big problem with this is that it's extremely unclear which of these have a 6% conversion rate of less. I think it's safe to say very little of this falls into that category.
Unfortunately, the horrible sorting of XBLA titles is just going to contribute to people not even trying these games out in the first place. We also just don't know how many downloads are required for Microsoft to come up with this ranking... Is 10 people downloading it going to be weighed as significantly as 1,000?
I think the games that will actually be removed ted will be incredibly rare, but at the same time I do not think this is the answer to XBLA's problems as more as better presentation and structuring is.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous that 12 or so reviews on Metacritic for XBLA titles can affect things so heavily. Metacritic already does its damn job. It helps inform you of your purchases. That's enough. I don't want it having a say in what I can and cannot play.

What about if I've downloaded the trial version of a game? Will I still be able to upgrade to the full version after the title has been de-listed?
What if I've deleted the trial version?

I hate how they are using "Metacritic ratings" as part of their criteria.
It is my opinion that everyone looks at such ratings differently, or not at all. Some people will obviously take them at face value but such ratings to me anyway are a bunch of crap.
A 63% for instance, isn't a god awful game imo. It will probably only be purchased by someone of the genre but even so, it can still be decent for that particular person. For instance as an RPG fan, I wont automatically cast anything aside if its above 50%, I will at least take a look at it. I may enjoy it because I am such a fan of the genre.
Plus why get rid of them anyway..if they are still going to be on their servers? *sigh*

It could be worse, they could be using just IGN scores, just Gamespot scores etc. I think Metacritic is a fair assessment of games and accurately reflects the quality of a game, film or album.

Some folks are going to be upset about Pac-Man and the like being included on this list, but you have to remember the third criteria of conversion rate.
Also, honestly, if a library title like Pac-Man doesn't meet the criteria.. is it really adding that much to XBLA?

Stuff like Pac-Man should not get delisted, but the poor sales definitely shows that their prices should be severely decreased. If they need to (for cheevo balance), re-release with 50 achievement points or something and a pricetag of $1 - 100 points at the most for simplicity's sake.

Marathon is definately staying, assuming past news that they're adding multiplayer maps to the game is true. They might also keep it purely because it was the pre-Halo.

Fuck Metacritic. Classic games should be immune.

why would they bother deleting them?
Just make a section called "poop" and drop them all in there, just in case a day comes where some dude gets the urge for jolly good whirl of Solitaire for the low low price of €10.
I'm really surprised about all the classic arcade titles being taken down. I bought pac-man!
