The Virtual Console provides some intriguing social commentary on tourism this week, with two games allowing us to travel the world and make a mess of it while we're at it.
Metal Slug (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): Honestly, we shouldn't even have to expend a bullet point on this game. You know what Metal Slug is all about. Dash through some jungles, some mountains, some ruins (they're all to East, just so you know) and shoot everything that isn't part of the background. Everything.
City Connection (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Travel through cities like New York and London, while marveling at the engineering incompetence that spawned multiple levels of dead-end roads floating in the sky. Driving up and down them is apparently illegal too, so be sure to bump off those pesky police vehicles.
This way you won't have to go all the way over to the case, pull it out, open it, take the disc out, take the disc to the Wii, put the disc in the Wii, walk ALL the way back to the sofa, sit down, pick up the Wiimote, and start the game.
Is there any difference between the Wii and PS2 versions of Metal Slug Anthology? I'd rather get the Wii one, but I remember hearing something about the controls not being the best.
The Wii controls are weak and the classic controller is NOT supported, only BigN knows why not, but the GC controller is working and highly recommended!!!
If only i had time to buy and play this. I just bought Okami-Wii today (complete with IGN-Watermarked cover), i want to finish a playthrough of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn before the end of next month, and i would like to give Lost Winds a whirl
So, essentially, it's fourth on my to-play list, and that's only if i clear the list before Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 comes out
Is it dickish of me to point out that for only $6 more than Metal Slug on Wii's VC, you can pick up SNK Arcade Classics on PS2 and get a fuckton more games to go with?
All VC games that are in anthologies definitely are. Sonic Mega Collection, Metal Slug Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics, Sega Genesis Collection, and others should be avoided if you have the supported platform.
Now, for individual games, this varies greatly. Based on current market prices, they radically overcharge for some games (most of the N64 games, I could've picked up F-Zero X at 6 dollars cheaper if i had bought it for my N64 instead, and pretty much all of the simpler NES games like Super Mario Bros)
But there are other games on VC which are worth what they're charging, according to the comparisons, and others that you are getting for a very significant bargain.
When I watch videos of games like City Connection, all I can think of is how wonderfully far video games have come! When I was a kid I remember that game being pretty okay, but now? I wouldn't download it if it were free! Thank god for new technology!
Just going to say that Metal Slug is the fucking king of this genre and I can't stand games that try to be like this. Where Mario, Metroid, Metal Gear and other big games beginning with M all have their faults - Metal Slug is faultLESS so would Alien Hominid and co please proceed to the exit.
To quote the GTA IV intro (which doesn't begin with M but can be improved)- "Daddy's back bitches" or something.
But I have the anthology on PSP and Wii so sorry Ninty.
I'm pretty sure that Metal Slug is still free on the Gametap client if anyone cares (though I haven't been on there for a few months now so I'm not completely sure).
Just sayin'... I think this is WAY too much for MS1 (even though it is awesome!) when it can be found for cheaper elsewhere.
Heh I thought for a sec that title was a weird way of saying Metal Slug supported multiplayer via the internet...But then I remembered it was Nintendo we were talking about, and then saw City Connection haha.
City Connection is one that I never expected to actually see on VC. I loved it as a kid and was pretty good at it, but I think I bought the actual NES cart used for about $5 when NES was the best thing around. Perhaps I'll see if it still works when I get home.

I've had Metal Slug Anthology since the Wii came out, why would I need to buy it on Virtual Console?

The Wii-specialized controls, no. Although i think it has compatibility with virtually everything, so you'll find something you like

No. It isn't. The Wii's VC prices are bull shit and everyone knows it.
Jhongerkong @ May 26th 2008 4:23PM
So true. I was thinking of buying Sonic 1,2 for $16, but I just bought the GC collection for $10

Bullshit in some cases

Is it dickish to point out that you can get Metal Slug 1 & 2 free from Gametap?
The game is as old as dirt. Fun? Sure, I have great memories of the Metal Slug arcade cabinet at my college, but $9? No.
Fernando Rocker @ May 26th 2008 3:34PM
I'm more interested in the new game. Metal Slug 7, Nintendo DS® exclusive. And no, I don't work for Nintendo.

Effing typos ruined my post and effing Nintendo agents shoot me in the ear.
Well at least it was better than that time the SDF got me trolling.
