Well, actually I have a principle to avoid highly rated (or hyped) gamed.

Looking back, many games I have enjoyed playing on PC last decade - and which made long lasting impression on me - were mostly from 50%-70% rating range. Only few were above 80%.

Fuck MGS series for the godawful plot. Does anybody remember the absurd plot device, where a fuckin transplanted arm TOOK OVER SOMEONES MIND!?! That is the worst D-movie plot device.

Nevermind the constant ridiculous pacifism and M.A.D. ranting which is sledgehammered into your head at each cutscene and thats not even getting into the government conspiracy bs.

Nevermind the ridiculously labyrinth character backgrounds, The Big Boss, The Boss, Solid Snake, Blue Snake, Green Snake, THE GODAWFUL RAIDEN, FOXHOUND, FOXLOVE, FOXDIE.

@Walsh
So I guess you think a man in a green suit that can magically regenerate itself can take on a hole planet with a couple of guns and grenades... or a plumber that runs around eat plants and growing raccoon tails while trying to save a princess that keeps getting captured by mutant turtle looking thing is a more believable plot...
If you are playing game just for the plot... maybe you need to go back to reading books.

The whole arm things actually makes sense in light of MGS3, where we discover that Ocelot's father was a very strong medium (The Sorrow).

The whole thing about the MGS series is it masterfully blends fiction and reality together. Anyone who can't figure out something that easy honestly doesn't have the right to have free will or thought.

Gamepro if full of 360 fanboys, their comment sections of each article are unreadably because its just ridiculous, however i always check out gamepro for their reviews, they often tend to score a little higher than some, but they are usually pretty good at giving reviews. By far my least favorite is Gamespot especially after them reviewing the Wiiware games, like the amazing Lost Winds, but anyway everyone knows Gamespot sucks anyway. Im glad to see MSG4 got a great review from someone not PSM, ill be waiting to see reviews from 1up and IGN in the near future.

""MGS4 has that effect on players, effectively blurring, if not erasing, the line that divides games and cinema.""

Let's hope Sony didn't forgot to include the "Fast Forward" button...

i loved MGS1, thought MGS2 was ok, and then just kinda got bored with 3 and lost interest with the series. I watched one video of 4 and i decided it was now a good time to get a PS3. Looks like it is as good as it looked.

Reminds me a bit of DMC...Im playing through that now on 360 atm, and to be honest, Im just playing to watch the next cutscene. The game just isnt all that fun to me.

Well-done cutscenes are nice. But it takes more than that for a good game.

"...effectively blurring, if not erasing, the line that divides games and cinema..."

Really? How?

In games, you play the story. You make the decisions. You dictate the outcomes. Games are interactive at their core.

There is nothing interactive about cinema. All the decisions are made for you. You just get to watch.

How is it possible to blur this line? Please enlighten on how MGS4 pulls this off. Otherwise, it all comes off as a bunch of empty gushing.

*Sigh, Im sure MGS4 is "without a doubt" a great game.

Am I the only person out here who has a problem with 90 minute cut scenes?

I like to play my games, Not watch them.

I tried to even play MGS3, and couldn't even get far into it due to cutscene... after cutscene.. after cutscene.

I prefer games where I am in control of the story telling, where my PERSONAL actions affect the story in real time.

While im sure this will be a great game, I just cannot get into a game where I can have the batteries in my controller die before even playing after a cut scene, and or go out to lunch and come back with a cut scene still playing.

I do like an engrossing story, but there becomes a point where there is just too much to handle. (saw IV syndrome.)

1) The 90-minute cutscene rumor has been debunked numerous times

2) IMO MGS3 had some of the best cutscenes of the series...and they were more for story progression as opposed to politics like MGS2's were.

If I were a producer, there are few games I would pick up for making a movie out of.

MGS: The plot can be quirky, and at other times utterly superb, it has an element of James Bond with mission impossible fused into 1. And the sci fi idea only adds to the drama.

Crysis: Who wouldn't want to see those robots on the big screen, Steven Speilberg, heres your cue!

Gears of war: Plot of game sucks, but I could make something of it.

And a couple of others including Bioshock, GTA and Warhawk.

On the news of the game, lets remain skeptical till we see the known critics cry.

Alternatively, let us praise the game ourselves when we play ^^

ALl in all, I'm ecstatic about this game, unlike Haze, I expected nothing but perfection from Kojima, he is one of the few developers I have complete 100% faith in. Others these days seem to let me down. :(

After reading Gamepro's review, I feel a bit skeptical. It isn't because of the high score it got, since I really don't have a problem with games getting 10/10(though I do agree that lately reviewers have been giving them out like crazy lately). It's really the content of the review. that's making me skeptical. Say what you want about Halo 3 or GTAIV, but I don't think any reviews for them claimed that they were the greatest games of all tiime.

I mean there's a difference between saying a game is amazing, and saying that it's one of the greatest games of all time, better than any game I've played this year. That's enough to make a man skeptical. To me the MGS series have always been somewhat decent and fun games(exception being MGS 2 since it got really dumb by the end) but nothing to really write home about. So I guess most of my skepticism comes from the fact that I don't really find MGS4 to be any different from the other MGS games.

Then again. Who knows? I haven't played the game(and I probably won't for some time) so maybe the Gamepro reviewer is right, and maybe this game really is the second coming. But until I actually get to play the game, I'll remain skeptical. I'm sure this game will be fun for people who enjoy the MGS franchise, but to say that it's one of the greatest games of all time? That might be going a bit too far.

"GTA 4 is one of the greatest games ever"

"Super Mario Galaxy is one of the greatest games ever"

"Halo 3 is one of the greatest games ever"

"Bioshock is one of the greatest games ever"

"Oblivion is one of the greatest games ever"

Really now I'm a hardcore MGS fanboy and love the series to death, and I'm not even really disputing that it may very well end up being one of the greatest. It's just hard hearing this for every freakin game now, specially when most labeled that disappoint.

Remember the days when saying one of the greatest ever actually meant something and was usually right because it was only used when actually necessary?

It seems like a lot of people feel threatened by these initial rave reviews--and those people are probably 360 fanboys.

Listen, I'm pretty much all 360 all the time, but there's no need to get upset when a PS3 game scores well. PS3 owners have a good year ahead of them. This game is one of the Halo 3 or Gears of War type of titles for them. It's surely going to move some systems.

But MGS4 is also a pretty niche game. It's not for everybody. I think people on both sides of this "console war" need to take a step back and get a grip. PS3 fanboys--This game is not going to kill the 360. Xbox 360 fanboys--let the PS3 owners have their turn. They have to have at least one good exclusive, right?

Why does Metal gear Solid 4 deserve a 10/10 when other games that recieve a perfect score do not?

Well for one Metal Gear 4 will be a single player game that takes hours upon hours to complete. It won't be a 3 hour game like COD4.

MGS4 will feature a complex story with full visual cutscenes far beyond the quality of almost any other game to advance the narrative. Unlike Bioshock which used mostly old recordings to advance the story. Video trumps audio for advancing a story every time.

Everything you really need to know about the story has been told in the games. Unlike Halo where most of the story Halo fans talk about actually comes from the books and other areas.

MGS4 is a masterpiece of single player gaming. Unlike Halo 3 and COD4 which were like training missions for multiplayer.

For $60 you get a game with true development behind it that makes games like Haze and Gears of War look like they were made in two weeks.

For people questioning the difficulty of the game: Have you played any MGS games before? The different difficulty settings are great; very easy is VERY easy, while Extreme is hard as crap. There's a setting for you, no matter how hard you want the game. Normal on all MGS games is some-what challenging the first time through.

gotta love the constant use of the word hyperbole today ... It has almost been used as much as the phrase "elitist prick" was during that Obama fiasco

So because other games have been touted as some of the best of all time means its not true with MGS IV?

All of those games you listed are fucking amazing ... There have never been so many fantastic games on the market at one time before ...

I have said on this site that MGS 4 would go down as the greatest game ever made ... It just depends what you like ... Assassins Creed belongs in your list but some people HATED it ... MGS 4 will be the same way ... Love it or hate it ... The thing that seperates it is the pedigree and the multiplayer component

MGS4 seems to be suddenly hyped once it got these good reviews. Although fans of the series were already hyped. Seems now from the reviews this great game will be getting Top Place.

The cover system in the Game was the only thing I disliked though...a bit to slow on reaction to the walls, could not get proper shots without being killed by someone with proper aim.

Gears of War, Brawl, and everyone else will have to step aside for Game of the Year. MGS4 is Number 1!

The 90 Min cutscene was a hyperbolic rumor passed around and it's false. There will be some long cutscenes though, which is no different from any of the other games and that's how I like them! I love movies, and I love games, and MGS does both things superbly! If you desperately leave those thigns apart, then this game isn't for you, there are some nice shooter games on Xbox LIVE that I'm sure you'll enjoy. But leave MGS alone, your input is not welcome especially when it concenrns something that the series is especially loved for!

The cutscenes in MGS4 are more immersive this time around. You can trigger flashbacks that nets you points for getting ammo and gun upgrades. Also during the breifings you can move around as the tiny robot to collect stuff and see different things.

Also there's nothing wrong with cutscenes. Who made you the authority on what people ought to have or like in games huh? I like taking a break to watch the character do something. Story is best told in cutscenes, especially one as detailed and complex and emotive as MGS4. That's what makes it a CINEMATIC experience! Bioshock isn't really cinematic, and somewhat dull when it's you having to look around yourself and you can miss things. There's no proper direction or subtleties or anything like what you'd get from a proper cutscene. I have no problem with games like that, but I play MGS precisely to see well scripted and choreographed cutscenes presented with proper direction and camera angles along with excellent gameplay. When I play games I usually want to be rewarded by a cool cutscene. So if there's something awesome to show me then by all means take control away from me at the right moment. Cutscenes in the MGS series are awesome and the story is head and shoulders above everything out there. And that's chiefly because of the cinematic experience and characters. You can't get that in the way that Bioshock or Half Life do things. It wouldn't be or feel the same. If anything it's more awkward to watch things like that happen where the characters rotate to look at or talk to you while stuck in an in-game pose or animation which isn't as fluid and believable as in a cutscene and I don't get immersed but I suddeny remember that all I'm really doing is playing a game.

It's all about pacing really! I loved MGS2 but I can agree the pacing for it kinda sucked between gameplay and cutscenes. I can give plenty of reasons for loving that game, then again I'm one of the few people out there that actually paid attention to the plot and likes trippy sci-fi. There are lots of cool things in that game and amazing things that Kojima pulled off! people complaining about Raiden really have no sense of fun, it was supposed to be a surprise for many! That was the point, or would you rather have the entire game blown for you? Boo hoo, he doesn't have a beard... you are probably the same people who complain about games not trying new things and shitting on franchises and then when they do do something new you complain some more...

I look forward to MGS4 and all the crazy things in it. Each and every MGS game has reinvented itself and none of the games feel like each other outside of a few core mechanics. MGS2 was a whole other level from MGS1. MGS3 introduced the jungle and camoflague system and CQC and a whole stylistic vibe with some beautiful boss battles in some beautiful scenery. Even Portable ops, despite it's issues was very innovative in using the PSP system and introduced a whole new style of playing MGS! And MGS4 looks to completely reinvent itself and push standards for gaming. A lot of reviews are still being coy about the things we'll experience and judging from the past games, there's bound to be plenty of crazy thigns and insane plot twists to keep things interesting and moving!
