Well, it's nice having a deadly new thing on your side for a change. Ubisoft's teaser video for the new Prince of Persia, hitting Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this holiday season, doesn't reveal much, but it does provide a glimpse of the title's touted, open world and the princely protagonist's lovely assistant, Elika.
It doesn't look as cell-shaded as the preview screens seemed to suggest, and for one I'm quite relieved. I'm also glad the moodiness of the Prince from 2 and 3 is gone.
I don't know, I quite like the cel-shaded look we've seen up until now. Mind you, this does look vewry good, so you won't find me complaining if it ends up like this.
I do like cel-shading, I just thought it seemed too much of a departure for the Prince. There seems to be just enough in this to pull him from the depths of emo-dom though, which makes me very happy.
Id it's CG and the rest of the game's cel-shaded, I'm not sure I could get used to that. Seems kind of out of whack, and suddenly jumping into a completely different artistic style would definitely pull me right out of the game.
According to the interview on Kotaku, it seems nothing like that:
"Elika is always a positive for the player. She interacts with the player in combat, acrobatics and puzzle-solving and always in a positive and helpful way. She enables special moves such as cooperative acrobatics, special combo attacks and navigation. Additionally, all of her magical powers come into play when the player requests them. She can never be killed and will never force her will on the player.
In terms of control, she will be controlled by AI but the player will have a specific “Elika” button to trigger specific coop moves, attacks and magic. Our philosophy is to leave as much control to the player as possible without having her bog down the fast-paced rhythm of the game. This way we add a layer of strategy and make sure the player uses Elika when and how he wants."
it just makes me wonder why they would have the art direction for the trailer differ so much from what we've seen of the gameplay. and if that's the way it is in the game, wouldn't that just pull the player out of the game-world? oh well, i'll play it anyway. i was just hoping to see what a good developer could do with cel-shading and the power of the PS3/360.
Cliche opening plot (Darkness..vs light! Darkness is in control! Main Character is fairly dark anti-heroish! The Chick has some magical light power!), the combat just seen was terrible compared to the awesome asskickery of PoP 1-3, and really didn't even giving me an effing Persia Vibe.
How can it be prince of persia it's in Super Kingdom Hearts Phantasy Land?
And this 'Deadly New ally" better not just be an overglorified escort mission!
Man I have never played any of the Prince of Persia games but this one definetaly looks good. I think I might pick up one of the old ones to see how good this series is.
The fact that they've gone back to a dark prince look from the second game.
the fact that the first trailer they release focusses ENTIRELY on combat (which isn't what PoP is remotely about) and doesn't show any platforming.
the fact they comeup with a cool cell-shaded look.. but then the cinematics don't match. WTF?
the fact they've removed the rewind time element. Unless they have a clever idea to replace it then thats a VERY risky decision. Without it the games would have been very frustrating and not half as free-flowing.

I'm quite impressed :)

Er, it's probably a CG trailer?
So anyway, deadly ally? Co-op confirmed, please?

chiche story with thw whole light dark good evil motif. lets hope the story is deeper than that.
also i don't know why but the girl reminds me too much of yuna

The air cartwheel looked a bit ridiculous, but that was pretty sweet all in all.
Leilock @ May 28th 2008 4:14PM
Wait... he's an unknown warrior, with a deadly new ally. Wouldn't they both be new? and unknown? but... *head asplode*
foxhound421 @ May 28th 2008 4:14PM
hopefully that "deadly new ally" doesn't turn into babysitting a shitty AI partner. anyway, i liked the cel-shaded look? did they dump that?

I love POP games. But "Darkness spreading"??
How totally original.
ugg.tryptophan @ May 28th 2008 11:16PM
maybe the world is a sandwhich and 'the darkness' is a condiment that happened to be applied too liberally
Deck @ May 28th 2008 4:18PM
Can't wait for the next Prince of Persia game!
As for the cel-shading...I would assume that was a cg trailer and the cel-shaded gameplay was not shown. That's my guess!
baby sea tuna @ May 28th 2008 4:21PM
That's what I was thinking. IGN has screens up and they still look cel-shaded to me.
foxhound421 @ May 28th 2008 5:49PM

eldee @ May 28th 2008 4:20PM
that actually looked kind of retarded...
I'm sure the game will be great, but the art direction has taken a turn for the worse imo.
David @ May 28th 2008 4:26PM
I want cel-shaded gameplay, dammit!

*looks Persia up on a map*

that makes me feel much better, Arttemis. thanks.

I don't like the blue eyes. Please remove them. They didn't have blue eyes.
LaughingTarget @ May 28th 2008 7:13PM
Remove their eyes? That would be quite disturbing, a bunch of empty-socket people running around.
Nomi @ May 28th 2008 8:11PM
Looks bad ass...
Spin44 @ May 28th 2008 8:50PM
What's a good PoP game to play if I wanted to get into the series? I was thinking "Warrior Within" but this review (http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/22/195/PrinceofPersia3ATheSandsofTime/197791) of "Sands of Time" makes the game look pretty good...
jorojoserojas @ May 28th 2008 9:08PM
Sands of Time was the best. I preferred that over the two sequels.
The 2 sequels are great though. Above average games in many ways.
Gehodra @ May 29th 2008 1:45AM
Read around a little more. Sands of time is considered the best (because it is :D), while Warrior Within is considered the worst.
Wii60Warrior @ May 28th 2008 9:44PM
Sick trailer but too bad the actual game looks shitty with its throwup cel shaded look.
Jhongerkong @ May 28th 2008 10:06PM
When I read that name, I instantly thought of the Prince would be fighting alongside a Vileplume.

I'm starting to worry.
