Why do they sell PS3s with 80GB drives if it's going to require an upgrade? Doesn't make sense to me.

I would be surprised if you filled up an 80 gig hard drive with just game data and installs. Even if you installed all 5-ish games that require 4-5 gigs each, that's only 25 gigs. leaving you a conservative 35 gigs for demos, game data, videos, etc. The only way I filled up my 60 gig HD is by ripping like 30 CDs to 256 bit AAC, plus a few 4 gig installs plus several gigs of demos.

Nate, I said I had to free up some space. I never claimed all 80GB was taken up by just game data. Who said that? I didn't know that you're I wasn't allowed to store music or video files on my PS3's hard drive. Now that I know, I'll kindly delete them.

Since you are wondering, here are some data installs from games on my drive:
Ninja Gaiden 3GB
Haze 4GB
darkSector 2GB
MOH Airborne 2GB
Folklore 1GB
GTAIV 3GB
Oblivion GOTY 5.7GB
Assassin's Creed 1GB
UT3 2.5GB
Rock Band 1GB
Uncharted 0KB

That's already over 25GB and doesn't even count Capcom games.

Some of those can be deleted now anyhow (rented Haze and finished it in under 24 hours, selling darkSector today, etc). And there's my 4-5GB free. Of course, this will be a continual struggle, with MGS4 coming out, and others which will undoubtedly use up lots of space.

I guess it's a lot like the Wii in this regard. It's a fridge, or something.

"you're I" ? This comment system is terrible. It needs an edit option. Srsly.

Anyhow, I have a few demos too, and some purchased downloaded games.

Either way, the PS3 isn't even 2 years old yet, and games hog too much of the drive already. If it really is on a 10-year plan, every single PS3 user who plays more than just Warhawk and COD4 all day long will have to upgrade their drive, at this rate. I have no faith that developers will stop being lazy and take the Naughty Dog route of making a game that requires no install at all.

Don't get me wrong, it's a minor annoyance to me. I initially commented in jest, as Capcom are a little obnoxious about the whole situation. ("Yes, we plan to eliminate the 4GB installs by simply not making PS3 games anymore.") Heh. At least they have a sense of humor.

Confusingly numbered? Last time I checked 4 came after 3! Unless they are confused by the roman numerals in this version.

I think they are talkin about the fact that the game (storywise) takes place between 2 and 3... and is called 4.

I think what they mean is, it's called Street Fighter 4, but there's like 50 versions of the game already out there.

As much as I want this, I just have too many games to play, hopefully this won't come out until the fall or winter.

Phew, I was starting to get a little worried that I was going to have to try and somehow play this with that horrible 360 d-pad.

Vcize - there are very few games that require big installs, I was using 5 as a high estimation of the number of games requiring 4-5 gig installs.... games like DMC4, Hot Shots Golf, and GT5.

Most games use 1-2 gigs max. Adolson has 11 games taking up 25 gigs of space. At that rate, you could have 25 games on a 80 gig machine easily.

Adolson - I never said media couldn't be on your hard drive, but it's each person's choice to use the hard drive space for that instead of games. It's easy to get a memory card, USB thumb drive, or USB hard drive, fill it up with media, and connect it to your PS3. Media doesn't need to be on your PS3's hard drive directly, unlike game data. Also, there's the DLNA option to have it accessible from any computer on your network.

Hopefully more and more game developers will take the Naughty Dog route and do things right. And I do think it's cromulent to bitch to the devs about it. But I don't think it's useful or appropriate to bitch to Sony about it. They aren't forcing anyone to use hard drive installs.... and their hard drive sizes are pretty respectable given current prices on laptop hard drives. The 20 gig drive was totally lame, but 40 is ok (not great) and 80 is pretty decent. I can't really fault them for not putting in higher cost drives given the cost of the rest of the machine.

I think Sony themselves have done really well by opening the dev standards to allow installs in the first place, and also opening the machine to generic drive upgrades.

I think that saying everyone will need to upgrade the machine during its lifetime is overstating things. I think most average users will be fine even with a 40 gig. They might need to delete some old game data after a few years if the trend continues with large installs, but are you really going to be playing DMC4 in 6 years anyway? Probably not.

While I've gotten somewhat used to the lag on Tekken 5 DR when playing online, I hope Capcom tries harder to bring it down to a minimum... Yes, I'm expecting online support for this title.

It'll be the deciding factor for which console I buy it for.. But for now, I'm leaning towards the PS3, because my 360 seems to be on it's deathbed, with frequent disc read errors... And from what I heard, those don't fall under the extended warranty given to RROD'd consoles.
