Much like they did with Penny Arcade Adventures, the mouse-loving folks at BigDownload have pitted both version of Mass Effect – Xbox 360 and PC – against one another to see which is the best portrayal of Prothean technology. The verdict is probably unsurprising, given the new version came out some six months after the original (and with a vastly improved inventory system). Head over to BigDownload for all the details.

Ya, this sort of comparison is pretty pointless. Bioware/EA announced all the improvements and have pretty much followed through with them. If anything, it would have been a surprise if the game was worse.

Yeah, this comparison is a bit pointless. Also, what is BigVersus, and why is it getting so much Joystiq love?

big versus is a segment on bigdownload.com, a sister site of joystiq that just launched.

Media blogs love cross-pollenation, so expect to see a ton of BigDownload links showing up on Joystiq. Not to say that it's unwarranted, but there's an awful lot of cross-site posting that happens when other sites pop up that are owned by the same network.

Think of Big Download as PC Fanboy...
Only with less fanboys, and more downloads that are large in size.

It runs way above console resolutions (or at least it does if your computer can handle it).

Now that they've relaxed the brutal copy protection, I might re-buy this for my PC, just to see it in all it's glory on my gaming rig.
Does anyone know if this game is going to use Windows Live (aka give out Gamer Score points)?

I don't think ANYTHING uses Windows Live, which is a hilarious joke of a system.

It's not really all that bad... I just don't like the clunky match-making or that you have to pay for it.
I've got Live for my 360 though, so it's "free" for me. That's the only reason I'm interested in it.

They keep saying the texture could look better on a high powered rig... so are they purposely running on a POS system to give the x360 a chance? I find that really annoying, when blogs and reviewers say the game could look better on a better system. If they don't have the goods, they don't really represent PC gamers. I'll wait for HardOCP to do a comparison. At least they have the goods :P

or maybe they are trying to represent what most ordinary gamers will see.
What really annoys ME is when the reviewers all use monster rigs, and the games I get to play bear almost no resemblance to the screenshots in the reviews.
(there are, what 9% of gamers with 8800 or equivalent cards. )

Then they can set the resolution lower and take screenshots on medium quality or low settings. Not everyone has an hdtv to play their xbox 360 or ps3. Would you watch a review of a Ferrari and how well it can navigate around a parking lot? lol.

Have you even played Gears on PC? What is "broken" about the controls...? They work fine for me.

Hmmmmm.. what is online play without the XBL screamers? I miss those days where the racial slurs and homophobic comments were screamed at me every 10 seconds. I certainly do not miss XBL and playing online PC games is a much more positive experience than XBL (plus it's $0/month)

They should always give an immediate -10 to the PC version for not being guaranteed to work on your system.

How can they guarantee a game will work on your system, when the different combinations of hardware / software are almost infinite?

None of those shots are comparing the same thing across platfroms. I'd be intrigued to see what is similar or different in the versions but would require much stricter controls on the comparisons.

Two things that had me interested in an Xbox 360, the Marvel MMO and Mass Effect.
Now I can buy a Wii instead...when they get some good games for it.
